Anyone getting graphics corruption in OSX Mavericks?

It's time to say that Mavericks is INCOMPATIBLE with (some) old Macs, MBP 2010 on the top of the list. 😟

I agree! Should four years really be too old for a mac? The graphic glitches are gone on my mid-2010, but it keeps shutting down from town to time when switching between graphic cards. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm starting to think about buying a new mbp, but I love the matte screen in this one.

I've posted on this poblem a number of times as an owner of an early 2010 MBP.

I had a whole range of problems when I first installed Mavericks including the graphics corruption, stalls, crashes, turn-offs, general slow performance.

I first tried a reinstall to no effect. I then tried a reinstall having done an erase of the hard drive, no effect.

I then did a reinstall having first underaken a zero overwrite of my hard drive and bingo, no problems of any kind since, even prior to installing 10.9.2.

If you decide to try this route PLEASE DO A FULL BACK UP TO AN EXTERNAL DRIVE OTHER THAN TIME MACHINE, as a time Machine reinstall is not always successful.

I'm convinced that the problems are somehow related to a conflict with an earlier operating system and only doing a zero overwite which completely erases the hard drive as opposed to an erase which removes the disc directory only cures the problems.

Would that be that be the same as installing on a fresh ssd? I installed 10.9, upgraded to 10.9.1 and then 10.9.2 and still get turn-offs.

This was a clean install, no clone, TM or anything.

I can't say sorry, as I say I tried everything I could think of and this was the only thing that worked for me. My Mac was disc though not SSD because of it's age.

My technical knowledge isn't great enough to understand whether certain parts of an old OS could remain on logic boards, RAM etc. but this process definately worked for me and my MBP is working as good as it did the day I bought it.

Just to mention I did the erase AFTER having installed 10.9.1 so whether that is relevant in some way I don't know.

it seems that hardware issues are common to other brands, not only Apple (Acer, Asus, HP). I contacted a local service center and they told me that the current soldering alloy does not contain lead anymore due to environment laws. This couses weak solders and after a certain period the mother-board fails.

Also, according to Apple service center internal reference, it seems that the hd flat cable can be damaged by hi temp. This sound possible to me.

My nightmare started after installing Mavericks and a Samsung SSD Evo Pro 750 on my MBP Firmware 6,2.

@Eddie J S: the only thing I did not do is zeroing disk...

Yes I can see they might be factors but then as you say it affects all computers whereas we all seem to have incurred problems following the upgrade to Mavericks.

Many users of the forum have said their problems have dissapeared since upgrading to 10.9.2 whilst others have stated that their problems remained even after hardware changes but have now been cured by the update, all of which suggests a software problem to me.

Certainly in my case it was only the zero overwrite that worked, my MBP is working as efficiently as when i first bought it - no crashes, shutdown, slow finder, graphics corruption, spinning beachball.

All in all it took me about 4 hours although I have over 200gb on my hard drive so in my view it was time well spent.

I will give it a try 🙂. Usually I defrag with DiskWarrior. What is really working to me is a "fantastic" downgrade to Lion (not without blood and pain... 😐)

Oh...so THAT'S what using Mavericks is supposed to feel like.

It looks like you can add me to the "problem solved" column. I reenabled memory compression and updated to 10.9.2. After as solid day of usage, I haven't experienced any graphics glitches. Performance has been as rock-solid as ever. Hope it, finally, sticks (fingers crossed, knock on wood).

For what it's worth, I went to 10.9.2 using the combo update rather than the incremental update. I always use the combos. They will reinstall components from the previous point updates as well as installing the current one. Maybe that can be a help to someone.

My problem is still there and worse since I upgraded to 10.9.2.

It is the 10th time today that this f**king machine crashes because of a simple task like just now, sending an e-mail.

Working with Photoshop, watching Videos on YouTube, NO PROBLEM, but the machine breaks down on easy tasks like opening a folder from a finder window.

Several time it has crashed while clicking on the Reply or Send button in Mail.

I am running the latest OS X 10.9.2 on an MacBook Pro 15" mid 2010, 2.66 GHz i7, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB. Compressor off, AGS off.

Heinz1970: That screen is the result of a kernel panic. The issues described in this thread were related to graphics corruption, but not system issues like crashing or errors (as far as I am aware).

Have you performed a hardware test on your computer? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Do you have aftermarket RAM installed? Try replacing it with the original RAM and seeing how it runs.

If you have an external drive or clone of your operating system, try booting from that and seeing if you still have the errors.

You can also see the actual error logs from the kernel panic by opening this folder: /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports (may need to do so from the Go/Go to Folder... menu bar link) This can give you a better idea of what might be causing the issue.

Finally, does your system still have AppleCare coverage? You may be able to show it to a Genius at a store to see what they suggest.

Heinz1970: The problem solved by 10.9.2 is the graphics corruption bug some users were having with the integrated graphics card.

If you bought your computer in less than 3 years ago, you can take it to an authorized service provider. They will run a test and replace your logic board for free.

I'm also having this problem with my mid 2010 MBP and as a temporary workaround, I'm running gfxCardStatus to disable the automatic graphics switching and force the integrated graphics mode.

I still have a few months to complete 3 years since my purchase, so and I'm taking it to fix next week.
