Email Folders gone after Mavericks update. -2
MBP
ok, I discovered the copy had literally no emails in it, so I attempted the following.
I made a back up of the old -2 folder to a tmp directory, than deleted both folders in mail. I than deleted the indexs as shown in this thread.
Now when I try to reimport them it will not let me 😟 ****, I hope I did not make this worse.
I'm no expert, just trying to be helpful. I would put the mbox folders back the way they were and then try to import them to a new Mail Account. You've already tried rebuilding the indexes without success so I wouldn't do anything more with them. Also, do only one change at a time so you can revert changes where necessary. 😕
These folders are local, they are not part of gmail or icloud account. what do you mean create another email account and import them? sorry for the dumb ?
I have the files in a tmp directly, but I am unable to import them...
Mail | Preferences | Accounts tab | + sign bottom left, add new account. Create a brand new, clean account then do File | Import Mailboxes | mbox format and point the file browser at your old mbox file that contains the messages you want. I would expect this to import the messages and create new indexes, etc. for the new mailbox. If successful, you could then delete the old, corrupted stuff and start afresh.
ok, I just tried the import with my .me account and it is saying that none of the files are valid. I can see all of them from the copy and paste.
Any other ideas?
No, sorry, beat me 😟. Sounds like your mbox files are corrupt so you would need to revert to a backup. Good luck.
right now, I am trying something crazy. restoring a full backup of these 2 folders as of 3 days ago, than using this guide to import them: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20040119005522596
If you are using the cloud for email I would wait. Go to iCloud.com and login and check to see if everything is there.
I do not use icloud for my email, only gmail. I really hate that this happened, and no matter what I am trying NOTHING IS WORKING!
After reading this post http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=884992 I pulled down a backup from Jungle Disc and manually Imported them back into Mail using http://www.mailsteward.com/download.html
Extract Backup
I have switched to using Fastmail.FM now. I never want to deal with this again.
where do i find
I do a file search and I get no results
my problme is after installing Mavericks over Snow Leopard when I opened Mail I had to re-set up my accounts - once i did this the mail send & receives etc
but most of my mail folders are missing - there are only five folders appearing out of about 20 mail folders that were there previously - but the ones that have re-appeared are empty anyway
also the inbox & outbox are empty (there were 100's of email in each of them)
this is my backup laptop that I use for travel and there were some important emails in the inbox that I really need access to
any suggestions???
per @toldar ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
it's weird I can't find it
there is no Mail folder in my Library folder nor in the System/Library
if I do a finder seacrh for MailData I get nothing found
the only V2 folder i can find is part of some shopoping cart software i have
(oh yeah - I probably should mention here that I don't have a recent backup)
it's only a few days email that I really need - the majority of my mail is all still on my desktop (which Maverick will be going nowhere near for the moment!)
good to know i wasn't alone, i lost massive chunks of locally stored emails, turns out upon upgrading my mail database mavericks decided to create extra folders and store some emails in these folders so when i opened them up in mail all i got was a subject with no content. repaired by moving the emails to my desktop and importing then moving them back to where they were supposed to be.
the most common things people want to use on a mac are email and the browser, if you mess up one of those things significantly then the rest of your product becomes untrustworthy by default.
I spent a huge chunk of tonight migrating away from mail directly towards fastmail. The google mail integration is completely borked.
