That would indicate either a preference file or a login item in your regular user is causing the problem.

look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Don’t just “hide” them by checkmark.

Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.

Unfortuately, there is no mouse or gesture preference file I know of. I could give a general fix for System Preferences, but you'd have to reset some of your System Preferences afterward.

Those of you who are connected via BT but have missing settings or functionalit, try this:

  1. Turn off your Magic Mouse and connect with a wired mouse.
  2. Delete your Magic Mouse BT instance System Preferences>BlueTooth.
  3. With the wired mouse click on Mouse settings in the System Preferences Main "Show All" page.
  4. At the bottom right, click Set Up BlueTooth Mouse...
  5. Pair your Magic Mouse and you should have everything back to normal.

Thanks AkivaMeir, your solution to delete & re-add Magic Mouse BT does work for me.

Glad to see this question raised. Am having the exact same issue. When I try to back swipe, the page moves about an inch and then freezes. Once it freezes, I can't refresh or scroll. It's basically locked up.

Have seen a few other threads where users say to go to Preferences > Mouse, and make sure everything is REchecked. I did that...but I still can't swipe back or forward.

(Using an iMac and the mouse that came with the computer).

I am having this problem as well, exactly as described by the original poster. I have already turned on the swipe gesture, which i did immediately after upgrading. This problem is intermittant, today has been a bad day but have been fine on other days. the only login item I have is itunes helper, I doubt that is it. There are no hung processes in activity monitor even when this happens. Other tabs function fine even when one tab is frozen.

One thing I noticed, and I am not sure it is relevant or not, is that my buttons at the top of the safari window were highlighted. I could move the highlighting with my L/R arrows, as if Safari changed into some keyboard only mode. However I do not know how to escape out of that mode if indeed that is what happened. THis was going on while I could see a strip of the previous page running down the left side of the window, so the graphics were still stuck in a partial page change.

same probolem here. i just removed the magic mouse in mouse setup and re-paired. seems to be working fine for me now.

what was weird was that when the magic mouse would lock up the scrolling funstions, if i moved my fingers around the trackpad it would unlock the scrolling and work on the trackpad until i tried to do it again on the magic mouse and then it would lock again.

strange

Hi, everyone!

Since I updated my BetterTouchTool, I don't have this issue anymore. The changelog of version 0.988 says:

"Various fixes and workarounds for OS X 10.9 Mavericks, e.g., to fix freezing, scrolling, and swiping issues."

So, I think that BTT is doing the job, handling the swipes and fixing the bug.

Until Apple don't fix this annoying bug, I hope this help you!

My best, Gui.

I've got the same issue, upgraded to Mavericks the weekend after it came out and the problem has only surfaced today. I can scroll in CHrome until I try the single finger page back gesture, at which point all single fingure genstures in Chrome stops functioning. Page back in Safari and the App store just crashes them. Not changed any mouse setting for months and have checked the gestures are turned on.

What's going on Apple? Not happy. This mouse cost me an extortionate £60, I'd like it to work please.

My magic mouse won't swipe back or forward in Firefox. I updated to Mavericks the day after it was made available to the public and had no issues with the mouse until Firefox updated to 25.0.X several weeks ago. Now, swiping left/right on the mouse acts more like "reload" instead of back/forward. It works fine in Safari.

I've used Better Touch Tool for the past year with no issues. The only custom gesture I use is a single 3-finger tap to automatically scroll to the top of a page. That's it. Installing Mavericks didn't uncheck any of my mouse settings in the System Preferences like other users have noted. I unchecked the "Swipe Between Pages" option in the System Preferences and created 2 new gestures in BTT: CMD+[ and CMD+] for forward and backward. It sort of works. I can now use a single finger to swipe forward/back in Firefox (or any other browser), but it's too flakey. Sometimes it's like I only have to bring my finger near the mouse and the browser page will jump backwards without warning - really really annoying when entering information into a form on a website. Yes, I have lowered the sensitivity in the BTT settings.

I literally just installed the latest BTT 0.992 hoping it would fix it. It didn't. If I disable BTT, swipe goes back to not working at all whether the option "Swipe Between Pages" is set or not. Fix. This. Bug. Apple. I've been a huge fan of the magic mouse since buying my first iMac a year ago... and over the past 2 weeks you have made me want to smash this thing into oblivion - the mouse, not the iMac. 😝

This is a system wide OS level issue. It happens with Safari and XCode as well. It is really random for me it moves an inch and freezes. I have to quit entire app and reopen to recover.

I am seeing this problem since 10.9 and currently running 10.9.2 beta and whats worrying is it is still not resolved in upcoming update, hopefully they will look into it soon.
