QTKitServer Safari Web Content
MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
I elimated the appearance of QTKitServer in Activity Monitor by disabling the extension ClickToFlash. I disabled it a week ago and haven't seen any occurences of QTKitServer in Activity Monitor since.
I'm now using the Safari Privacy feature that allows one to mangage website settings to block adobe Flash Player. (Preferences -> Security -> Manage Website Settings...) Here's a description of how to use this feature:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57609106-263/manage-plug-ins-on-a-per-site- basis-in-safari-7/
According to the article, this feature is new to Mavericks Safari version 7.
I executed the quit and relaunch option without trashing the file... this alone seems to have removed the bug for now. Thanks for your help
Ok.. you can select the QTKit Server in the Activity Monitor the click the force quit icon (circle with an x) top left in that window.
Doing that also speeded up Safari for me!
After updating to 10.9.1 today, I am no longer seeing Safari QTKitServer hangs and Safari loads multiple tabs quickly. Good for Apple! Let's hope it lasts.
I just like to add that since I have been deleting QTKitServer Safari Web Content (unresponsive activity in red) from the Activity Monitor, my MacBook Pro early 2008 4gb RAM seems to running better with Mavericks. When I updated to Mavericks from Snow Leopard I did not do a clean install. However, having read posts about Mavericks problems I do not think it made a difference. I hope this situation continues until Apple fixes the bug.
I would suggest that anyone having problems with Mavericks look into this bug on their computer; as a possible culprit.
I have this issue too- it manifests itself in playing mp3 content in Safari (and Chrome too) - I use a Sapphire Pro 24 and the MixCOntrol FW buffer controls will actually correct the probelm for me temporarily. It is NOT Flip4Mac, but I think how Quicklook services translating to your desktop is broken a bit (quicklook on this 2008 iMac is terribly
slow too)Many problems for me were resolved with a Nuke and rePave - but for this one (and the random LogicProX hang-hang-hang-spinning beachball (really annoying -probably memory related)
If you have control on your FW buffer, and can reset it, you can temporaily fix these QTKIT issues. but 10.9.1 hoepfully will resolve this.

In my case, I had gone through a clean re-install of Mavericks and no "back to my Mac" or anything for fear of bring back across some problem I may have introduced. I have no 3rd party installs, just iWork and iLife suites.
So in my case, simply deleting movies from my iPhoto and/or streams did the trick. For others, your suggestions are a bit extreme but certainly sound... it would turn what should be an expensive but amazing computer into a low-class paperweight. If you were to suggest Boot Camp partitions, install Windows 8 and run off that... I wouldn't be surprised at this point. At least it would work!
It helped me, I'm hoping it will help you.
Make sure to quit and relaunch Safari after you move the defaultbrowser.plugin to the Trash
Then check Activity Monitor.
If this is any help I have been having look in my console and discovered this:
06/11/2013 17:43:33.043 com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.qtkitserver[349]) Could not terminate job: 3: No such process
I too have been having the same problem. Qutting safari cleared the error out of the activity monitor.
Hurry Up Apple with 10.9.1! Please! 🙂
Once those processes are terminated they eventually return, so yes its best to just ignore them for now as long as they don't have an impact on overall performance.
Dear GrandGizmo, Thank you and I hope the engineers respond soon. In the meantime I think we can just delete the process via the Activity Monitor.
Carolyn, I've been having this problem. When I updated to 10.9 I had about 20 safari windows open, many of them with lots of tabs. I tried your suggestion to delete
DefaultBrowser.plug-in from /Library/Internet Plug-Ins and then rebooted.
Before rebooting I had about 20 QTKitServer... not responding in Activity Monitor. Now, after startup and opening all the safari windows there are 10. They didn't show up all at once and usually (always?) showed up black and then going red in a minute or so. The good news is they all use < 0.1 CPU seconds before they die.
One thought I had is that I'm using the ClickToPlugin extension and than might be killing something that upsets QTKitServer. I also use Little Snitch to block unwanted outbound messages. I'll check both and report back....
Mac4Life2012, don't blame Apple so much for the fresh bugs with Mavericks. This is the first time I have installed a new version of OS X on the first day it was released. Even the first releases of previous OS X versions have had issues, and Apple eventually patched up the bugs and stuff. If you are having any other kinds of problems, I would suggest waiting for the OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 update. You can always use Time Machine to restore to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5. I mean, if the issues are too bad for you, you could always do that. However, my Macbook Pro is two years old, and it runs just fine on Mavericks. The only thing that I find wrong is this QTKitServer issue in Activity Monitor, but it doesn't use up lots of resources or anything when the process stops responding. Personally, I don't like the new iMovie though, and I hate Chrome.
Well, you don't have to worry about a virus on the Mac. There aren't any viruses for the Mac, and most malware or other trojan horses won't run on a Mac unless you willingly install them by entering your admin name and password. These Mavericks bugs should be fixed sooner or later. Plenty of people have this QTKitServer not responding problem, so Apple knows about it. I even called Apple myself, and the engineers are looking into it as we speak. A Senior Advisor from Apple is suppose to call me when the engineers have the answer, because I have an open case with them.
On another note: It seems as if it was a good move to carefully listen to the fan (having a MBP). Once that goes off like a turbo, this is a good sign that there are a couple of QTKitServer in red that wait to be terminated.
Once terminated, it seems as if the fan activity/heat production winds down.
Heat is actually a real problem with my MBP as it already killed 2(!) Logiboards..
I'm considering moving to FireFox altogether as those faulty processes say: Safari. Might fix the issue.

Update: I have not had a crash or flickering screen problem until I tried out of curiosity to open Quick Time. Once I open it my screen started flickering again and I needed to shut down and restart to resolve problem. FYI: My first flickering problem also appeard when I was using Quick Time for the first time with Mavericks installed.
Ia there a problem with Quick Time and Mavericks?
