How to add an hotmail account to Mail ?

If you have activated two-step verification security for your MS account (includes mail) - you need to go to https://account.live.com/proofs/AppPassword and use the unique password generated there, not your email password - and you must regenerate a distinct number for every device you access hotmail with - this worked for me after frustrating hours .... it's not made plain anywhere at MS.

Thank you, your advice helped me to fix the problem of adding HOTMAIL account to Mail.

No need to go to "other mail": use OUTLOOK option try to login and it will fail. At this point 2 new fields appear: "Internal URL" and "External URL".

Enter "incoming: imap-mail.outlook.com" in the "Internal URL" field

Enter "outgoing: smtp-mail.outlook.com" in the "External URL" field

Now it works

Make sure that before you add the new hotmail account you remove/delete any previous versions you may have by going to Mail -> Accounts and removing any old hotmail inboxes by highlighting and clicking on the "-" sign which will remove them. Once this this done, then you can go ahead and add the new hotmail account by following the steps as described here.

it tells me account already excists

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts /Account Information. Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. See if the account is listed there. If so, delete the SMTP server for the account. Try to add the Mail account again.

You can also check System Preferences/Internet Accounts to see if the account is there.

looks like MS changed this again. the below setup worked for me

incoming: imap-mail.outlook.com:993

outgoing: smtp-mail.outlook.com:578
