Mavericks will not sync Apple Contacts with Google, Linkedin, and Facebook?

I just upgraded to Mavericks. Here is what I find shocking...

1. Mavericks will NOT sync Apple Contacts with Google Contacts and vice-versa.

2. During the upgrade, Mavericks linked some of my Apple Contact cards with Google Contacts, but not all of them. It need to be clarified that linking is not syncing. Worse, it corrupted data, and deleted some of the contacts on Google Contacts.

3. Similarly, Apple Contacts will not sync with Linkedin or Facebook Contacts.

4. When I contacted Apple, Level 1 support had not idea and assumed that adding a Google Account with automatically sync Apple Contacts with Google Contacts as it did in OS Mountain Lion. Level 2 support did not have much of an idea either, but called me this morning to say that the matter has been escalated, and confirmed that OS X Maverick does NOT sync Apple Contacts with Google Contacts.

CAUTION before upgrading to Mavericks:

5. Your Google Contacts / Android devices will not be updated by Apple Contacts, and vice-versa.

6. Your Facebook / Linkedin contats will not be updated by Apple Contacts, and vice-versa.

The workaround:

7. Before upgrade, ensure that your Mountain Lion or earlier address book in synced with Google Contacts.

8. After upgrade, go to Contacts > Preferences > General > Default Account, and choose your Google Account as your default account. You will now add New Contact (or update existing Google Contacts) in Google Contacts, which your android devices can sync with. You will also see your Google Contacts in Apple Contacts. However, Apple Contacts will NOT sync with Google Contacts and vice-versa.

Welcome to Mavericks...

Let me share my experience with this issue.

I have three major address books and since upgraded to Mavericks I had loads of issues with all contacts.

Like double/triple contacts, birthdays, reminders etc.

I've tried to find elegant solution, but...

So, what I've done.

I have deleted (backed up first) all contact in my @icloud account from web.

Opened address book on Mac switched off icloud. Answered "yes" on question about deleting contacts from local Mac. Then witched back on. My @icloud address book was in a virgin state.

Then I just select all Gmail contacts in Mac address book and drag them to @icloud account.

Now the contacts fully synced both way.

If I change something in any account, changes apply to another.

No double entries, no double birthdays.

Awesomeness!

are you sure ..

My experience has been that any edit/changes made in the contacts app on the Mac will only update the acccount that the contact belongs to ..

Here is what I just did ..

1. emptied out my iCould address book on the Mac.

2. Deleted all contacts from the iCloud website .. just to make sure.

3. Copied a test contact from my gmail account to icloud .. on the mac .. in Contact.app

4. Checked icloud on the web, the test account shows .. Good.

5. Clicked on the icloud account in the contact app .. shows my test account .. Good.

6. Click on the Test Contact .. it shows my icloud and gmail account at the bottom of the card .. Good .. so far.

7. Added a 'work' address to the contact .. shows up in the contact card (Mac) and iCloud(Web), but NOT on gmail (Web)

8. Went to gmail.com and added a 'home' address to the contact.

9. After a few mintues, the home address AND work address show up on the Test Contact on the Mac (Contact.app)

10. iCould(Web) only shows the 'Work' Address.

11. gmail(Web) only shows the 'Home' Address.

Did some further testing, but looks like the contact.app is keeping track of which accounts the data is coming from. In case the same data (..same meta data and data..) comes from multiple places, it will consolidate, if there is a difference, it will create multiple instances of the element. It does not 'sync' the internet accounts .. It does consolidate on the desktop (mac).

I was having syncing issues but I did the following and now I'm synced between my iPhone, My Mac, and My Gmail account.

I turned off iCloud and totally logged out. I removed my Google account from my Mac system prefrences then added it back on, loging in again. This set my default account to Google. Key point here. On the first tab, General, of the system preferences of the Address Book on my Mac (OSX Mavericks) the last item is Default Account setting. Once this was set I was able to add a test new contact on my Mac and it was added to my Gmail contact list AND once it pushed my iPhone was there too. And deleting the test contact also updated in all three places, iPhone, My Mac, and Gmail.

Of course I did not turn on iCloud again. Not sure if that would make things not work or not. I wasn't really using it, only for contacts as a backup, but now that I'm synced with Gmail I'm fine. I'm sure there might be some old local "On My Mac" contacts that may not be synced with my Gmail. I have to check that out. But my iPhone is really the root of my contacts.

So I hope that makes sense but I think it works now.

Hello, I have a problem. When I open Contacts preferences, and go to "On my mac" tab, the option "sync with google" does not show up!

User uploaded file

Now the problem is that I cannot sync contacts on my mac with my google account. Contacts that I add to "On My Mac" do not show up in my google contacts and vice versa.

I tried deleting all the files inside "~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook" and it did not help.

Anyone can help?

Thanks

To reopen an old subject (I assume that this is discussed elsewhere and I just haven't found it), synchronizing between Google and Mac OS Mavericks seems to work fine for me now.

What I did was to delete my google account (one of many accounts) from the Internet Accounts System Preference. I then went to contacts in Google and deleted all my contacts. After everything had settled down, I then added the Google account back to my Internet Accounts System Preference. I thought that would populate my Google account with my contacts but it didn't.

I then went to Address Book and went to my iCloud contacts, selected all, and dragged them to my Google account in the left-hand panel of Address Book. After everything settled down, I made a change to a contact and it propagated to Google.

How all of this works seems a little magical, as I have 3 Mac OS computers, two iOs devices, 5 Google accounts and 1 iCloud account. And every Mac OS and iOS device can have different sets of the Google and iCloud accounts synching. But so far, it seems to work.

PS--Does anyone know what Csound1 is saying?—I don't understand his comments at all.

The answer to this problem is simple:

1. start your browser on your macbook.

2. go to the google contacts home page and log in.

3. select all your google account contacts.

4. click the "more" button and select "export"

5. select the "vCard" option for apple address book

6. click export and open the file. the contacts will appear in your "Contacts" folder on your macbook.

7. enjoy not having to manually type in all that ****.

Auromira is correct!

Be sure to set default account on Mac Contacts to your Gmail.

That will push any of your Mac-added contacts to Gmail.

As long as your iPhone is pulling contacts from Gmail as default, the contact added on your Mac will then also show up on your iPhone. (And vice versa ... if you add a contact in iPhone, with Gmail as your default account, it not only shows up within Google, but also on Mac Contacts.)

THANKS AUROMIRA!

The workaround:

8. After upgrade, go to Contacts > Preferences > General > Default Account, and choose your Google Account as your default account. You will now add New Contact (or update existing Google Contacts) in Google Contacts, which your android devices can sync with. You will also see your Google Contacts in Apple Contacts. However, Apple Contacts will NOT sync with Google Contacts and vice-versa.”
