New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

I'm using the new Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and in the short span I've used it I've encountered a problem multiple times where the machine crashes during sleep. (I also tend to leave my WD external hard drive plugged in, if that makes any difference.)

I have two error logs, but since they are quite lengthy I have made them viewable in this Evernote:

This is happening on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) with the previous Mavericks and continues with Yosemite 10.10.1. I thought it was the Belkin Thunderbolt dock that has a Thunderbolt WD drive and a USB WD drive since it does not seem to happen with everything disconnected. Tried eliminating the dock and connecting the drives directly, still happens.

Only solution for now is to avoid the Sleep mode and shut down the computer when not in use, or otherwise just dim the monitor and keep the computer running. So stupid, but no other workaround works. I don't want to risk loosing data on my external drives by having the computer crash with them attached.

PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!!

I've been troubled with this issue for quite a while. I'm running 10.9.5 and Apple still hasn't fixed it. I thought Yosemite might get this bug fixed but I found out it didn't help either. It's very frustrating. I have to do a hard reboot to bring back control of my MBP so I can give a short demo in front of my students. It was embarrassing to see Apple fails us and even all my students. Hope we can get a fix from Apple. 😟

I just started having a very similar problem on my late 2008 model iMac running Mavericks. The last couple mornings when I wake up, my computer has restarted itself during the night. I think this happened during the day yesterday when I wasn't using my computer for a few hours too.

This started after I hooked up an external display (HDTV) which was not turned on during the night. I just assumed that the computer crashed while trying to put that monitor to sleep or something along those lines.

I unplugged the connection yesterday because I was struggling with my notifications, hot corners, etc. At various times I had it in mirror mode or positioned above my computer since it is mounted on the wall. I didn't really need the external monitor at this time, was just trying it out and it was getting frustrating when I would lose my cursor at the top of the screen when I went to use menus when I had the HDTV turned off.

After I unplugged it completely, I still was losing my cursor at the top of the screen, as if the computer still thought I had two monitors. I switched it back to mirror mode to prevent this but I was frustrated because it didn't seem to fully go back to "one screen" mode. Even now, when I go into displays, the "SONY TV" window still appears along with my iMac monitor with no apparent way to remove it. (edit: I just figured this out, you have to hold "option" when in display prefs and it gives you an option to "detect displays" which now cleared the SONY TV from prefs. Hopefully this solves my issue! But I still need to figure this out because if I do choose to have this TV attached I don't want this to happen every night...)

And tonight my computer once again had restarted while I wasn't using it. I have display sleep on but not computer sleep. I don't see a "burst sleep" mode or whatever it is called under my options.

I feel like if I could just erase all trace of that external monitor it could solve this problem, I get the feeling it is looking for this monitor to put it to sleep and gets confused. Also this might help others troubleshoot as it seems to mostly affect MBPs. It seems to be related to this external monitor, that is the only thing that has changed in my set up that seems to be related to this issue for me.

I have a MBPr purchased in summer 2013, which never gave me any trouble until some months after I installed Mavericks. I had a double problem, as it would also crash with an external monitor or sometimes watching videos, but it was not easy to find a correlation. The crash while awake problem went away when I stopped using Chrome, and it was at that point that I was able to identify the Sleep-Wake failure. Mine occurs independent of USB connections, power connections, etc. So these are not the issue in my case. I am surprised to see that Apple has not resolved this after over a year and a half.

I recently had this issue over the last few months or so with my early 2011 MBP. I took my mac to the Genius bar, and they told me that my hard drive was bad, and that was most likely causing the sleep/wake failures.

I was a little skeptical because I've noticed no such issues with reading/writing large files onto my HD. (Perhaps they thought there was something wrong because I replaced the HD with a SSD?)

Regardless, I kept having the reboots, and failed to believe it was because of my HD.

Thinking about it - I did start using the adblock pro plugin with Chrome and Firefox around that time. Then - I noticed that when I had Chrome with a number of tabs open when I put my laptop to sleep, those were the times that it would reboot. I tried leaving Firefox open with multiple tabs - no issues...just with Chrome and the adblock pro plugin.

I went ahead and removed the adblock plugin from both firefox and Chrome and started using ublock. Since then, I've had no issues.

So - perhaps that's why Apple is 'slow' to fix this - maybe this isn't their problem.

Also - I wanted to post this because I've been so annoyed with this problem and couldn't figure it out for so long. But - for everybody else - check your browser plugins..that might do the trick...

When plugged in with an HDMI cable (or sometimes USB equipment), my macbook pro retina 2013 15'', running OSX Mavericks 10.9.5,

had the same problem.

Mac shut down and needed to start up again after putting it to sleep, with a message like: 'You shut down the computer because of an error.'

As far as I understand the problem, 'power nap' causes this. Hope apple will update this problem later.. Anyway, for me, the solution

is to turn power nap off, in both Battery & Power Adapter mode. When I get all my HDMI / USB devices out my macbook before putting it to sleep,

it never crashes again. Didn't try putting it to sleep with my HDMI / USB cables in yet.. but I have a feeling this might work as well. Long story short.. I think some of you might find the solving trick by turning power nap off.

Same issues as reported by others.

MBP 15inch mid 2012

16 GM ram

Yosemite 10.10.4 (and other OSs going back to October of 2014)

Presence of hard drives and other devices does not make a difference.

Essentially cannot use sleep anymore. Have to go to full shutdown. At times, even that "fails" due to some type of hang during shutdown. Screen is black, lights are off on keyboard and in front of laptop. But upon trying to power up, battery is dead.

Additional complication is that when this happens, battery is unrecognized for a few power cycles. Then it works again. Would be nice to have a resolution.

Same issue happening for me on a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015). This happens extremely frequently. Insanely frustrating having to constantly shut down my computer, knowing that putting it to sleep for any length of time will result in this crash.

PLEASE fix this, Apple.

I've got the same issue with a brand new Macbook 12" retina.

Have had many many apple laptops and desktops. Never seen this issue before. I agree this is frustrating and the folks at the Genius bar swear they have never heard of it. Not sure how that could be the case with the multiple online threads and articles about this issue over the last couple of years.

I still love my computer, but have grown to accept the random reboot. Sad. . .
