New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

This also happened to me, actually. However, I have a MacBook Air that was recently updated. Every time I close the lid and then try to get back on, within the next 30 minutes-1 hour it crashes. Maybe it's a cause of the new updates?

I've been experiencing the sleep wake failure problem since we purchased our macbook pro retina late 2013 model. We've own it from new and at first this machine did this a couple of times a week, now it is on a daily basis and it's driving me nuts. There's nothing else attached to the machine, no external drives or other programs added only a printer and that is turned off and disconnected until it's needed. It can shut down when on charge or off charge, usually after a long close, usually at 1.02am it wakes us up!

Nothing I've tried can sort this problem out, it is driving me nuts and every time I have to restart from holding down the on and off button I have trouble getting the machine to work again.

Other issues include the machine constantly asks me for a password that I never actually set, contacted Apple support about this within the first three months of ownership and it was resolved but the problem came right back after the next sleep wake issue happened so I've been living with it. There's more and more niggles appearing with my machine, no idea what is going on with it.

At first I thought the sleep wake failure was the mac just updating and turning off but obviously I was wrong.

I've joined this forum in the hope to find a way to cure this machine and this machines fault to this thread.

I have the same problem with a brand new MacBook Pro (Retina 15" Mid 2015). I put it to sleep by closing the lid. When the next day I open the lid, the screen stays black and the keyboard lighting comes on. Otherwise the machine is completely unresponsive. Thats it. I have to hold down the power button to force it to switch off and then do a normal boot. Then I am greeted with the message that there has been a kernel panic.

There are no devices attached to the machine except the power cord.

Reinstalling OS X didn't change anything. Resetting PRAM and SMC didn't change anything. Running "first aid" on the hard drive did not find any errors.

It is a very frustrating experience unworthy for former apple quality standards.

Apple please fix this! A trustworthy sleep mode without having to fear that you loose unsaved data is essential for a product aiming at professional users.

Same thing here. It doesn't have any relation with USBs. Tried everything and nothing works. I'really upset with Apple, my old Macbook Pro 13 2010 used to work better and was more reliable.

I'm having the same (sleep/wake failure crashes); installing OS X El Capitan has not helped, in fact my MacBook Pro may be crashing more often now with the same 'Sleep Wake Failure' error.

This is still going on with a Mid 2013 MPBr - rather just started.

Investigating if this is linked to the video card issues - as the problem started with serious video display artifacts on wake and reboot. The system stabilzes on the video issue but has the wake failures now.

MBPr is going to be sent in for repair for now and seems to be covered under the video card issue.

so is anyone else experincing this? I'm getting this all of the time now (whereas i was previously only having the problem sporadically). Shut macbook lid, put in bag, open it up a few hours later, doesnt wake, have to hold power button, get the message that there is was a Sleep Wake Failure problem and would i like to report it (lol as if reporting it makes any difference whatsoever!)

running 10.11.4 on a mid2015 top tier macbook.

After several PRAM and NVRAM resets, disk maintenance and removing external devices (like a SD slot card) my laptop seems to have normalized.

An Apple genius recommended trying to set up anew user to see if the faults still continue. I was about to do a full system overhaul (OS reinstall) but the issues have resolved themselves.

RAM is stored on the HDD for the "deep sleep" or Standby mode of the laptop. If that cannot be saved or retrieved - I can see there being a failure.

The corrupt graphics could be result of a failed wake

I'm joining this issue because I have same problems. My Retina MacBook Pro late 2013 (OS X 10.11.4) returns an error after opening lid and trying to wake it up from sleep. Every time I close lid for a more than 1-2 hours, it won't wake up - my mac is unresponsible and HOT so I assume that it is not asleep at all (only hard reset is an option). This is a serious problem because when I close lid and leave my mac for whole night it's actually working all the time. Here is my log after hard reset

I'm having the same problem on my early 2015 rMBP.

This problem only started after I've installed a WD Element external hard drive. The computer will restart automatically after entering sleep (by closing the lid or leaving the computer idle for a while) for around 8 minutes. There are no error messages after reopen the lid, but it is obvious that the computer restarted because I see the initial login screen (with shutdown and restart options at the bottom) and all programs are closed.

The problem occurs when the WD Elements external hard drive is NOT connected to the computer. Upgrading to El Capitan does not help. Turning off sleep or running caffeinated isn't a real solution to the problem... just shouting out. I doubt apple will ever fix this problem, seems like a recurring issue.

I kind of regret getting a Mac after this... the screen is nice and all but this sleep problem is annoying, and Genius Bar isn't any help.

I had this same issue for several months, but it seems to be fixed. In my case I believe that some security software that my online bank demanded that I install was causing it. It was called Trusteer.

I removed it and have not had a sleep/wake crash since. I've had lots of nagging from the bank however.

If it happened immediately after you "installed" an external drive, then it may be linked to software that WD asked you to install. If you've been keeping Time Machine backups, go back to before the installation, and you may be good to go.

I am testing my idea. This problem might be caused by Power Nap. It's "half sleep" mode when OS X disables some applications, but lets others run or wake up during sleep to do such tasks as checking e-mail - How Power Nap works on your Mac - Apple Support. Most of them need internet access. WiFi drivers or it's interaction with some of those applications might cause the crash. In addition if MacBook is plugged in, it might do more sophisticated tasks, like Spotlight indexing, which raises the risk of crashing.

Power Nap was introduced in OS X Mavericks on October 22nd 2013. Notably this thread started on Oct 29, 2013, which confirms my idea.

Try turning off WiFi and use Ethernet cable. I have tried everything to stop my USB issues, removed drives from spotlight, inc new cables, terminal editing, turning of Power Nap, hard jumpering the drives in my USB Raid, increasing the fan speed, turned off all wake options in energy preferences. Turn off your WiFi, my Macmini has not yet disconnected, been 1 day now, and counting. Get the ASD for your particular model, and run it.
