New rMBP sleep/wake failure crashes

I'm using the new Retina MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and in the short span I've used it I've encountered a problem multiple times where the machine crashes during sleep. (I also tend to leave my WD external hard drive plugged in, if that makes any difference.)

I have two error logs, but since they are quite lengthy I have made them viewable in this Evernote:

Hey Marc,

I am unsure about the accuracy of "f NerdForHire is right, then maybe it's not about USB connected drives, but rather a symptom of having drives mounted (regardless of source)"

As this occured for me several times without ANY USB devices attached.

MacAir (2013) 8GB i7 512GB

Retina Macbook Pro 2012 i7 16GB 2.6GHz 512GB

and iMac 2012 32GB, 3.4GHz, i7 768GB this has mounting USB issues

I think I may have a tentative workaround

One thing I "think" may have helped is a reinstall, (not fresh install) of Mavericks just yesterday and I am yet to see any reoccurence although Mr iMAC is still creating the mounting issue..... good luck and please continue to update your findings so others can be helped too!

This has ONLY happened to me with NO USB drives attached! I have never seen this problem during the day with AC unplugged and with USB drives mounted. During the day I can put my rMBP to sleep and wake 100 times with no problem just by closing and opening the lid. Today I woke up and everything was fine. Tomorrow I bet it will happen.

*** My guess is that is has more to do with putting a computer to sleep and then immediately connecting to charger. THIS PROBLEM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MOUNTED USB DRIVES!

*I also want to add that mine is not rebooting. It just shuts down and I wake up to a black screen. Upon boot I get the improper shutdown notice

@NerdForHire: I believe you are dealing with a different problem. The issue most of us have been logging and narrowing down here does NOT occur when waking the machine from sleep.

Our issue is that, when a USB drive is left connected, the machine will not remain peacefully asleep for more than a few hours. It will spontaneously reboot itself, repeatedly, various hours apart without any user interaction. When we return to wake he machine, it wakes fine but reports the sleep wake failure that caused the reboot and we can see the history of these failures in the log. Disconnecting all USB drives before putting it to sleep or allowing it to sleep itself avoids the failures (but is obviously inconvenient and not acceptable behavior).

I'm sorry you're having troubles with your machine, but it is apparently a different issue. You may wish to see if there is another thread with other people discussing your particular problem that may be of more help to you.

Cheers and good luck. Hopefully there are fixes coming from Apple soon!

@NerdForHire: Apparently I can't edit my recent post any more to correct typos.... But I also wanted to correct my characterization of your issue. We don't experience what you describe where the machine has shutdown and it reports not being shutdown properly, but perhaps there are others who are dealing with this. I'd search on those keywords... "Shutdown improperly"

Also, note the "sleep wake failure" notice is named that by the system, not us. It's not that we're trying to wake the machine and experience a failure.

First off I'm not a troll. I'm telling you exactly what he told me over the phone. The reason I posted it was to hear your reactions since this is my 2nd MacBook Pro and it's the only one that it's happening too. I guess it's not the hardware then. But I'm also getting a weird box on the screen in Photoshop when I use the advanced graphics setting which is a default setting

Pophawk - 1) While faslkdjfalskdjfalskdfj's post was a little suspect for being vauge that wasn't really, what I least I, would call a troll. It's just a questionable report of someone's expereince. 2) Trolls LOVE to take time to track and respond to replies, doing so IS the hallmark of a Troll and what they live for. It is why trolls make personal attacks, question semantics and generally sow discord to illicit attention. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Internet)

faslkdjfalskdjfalskdfj - Apple support is who suggested I return/replace my rMBP as well. They didn't suggest it was a 1:1000 failure (and while I beleive you, that seems a very unusual statement to come from AppleCare). They told me "you should not have any problems with your brand new Mac and should go to an Apple store and exchange it for a new one immediately". As I sadly don't have an Apple store available to me I'd asked if the exchange period could be extended a few weeks so I could do it while I was traveling in Vegas next week, which they said they could arrange, however, she added that since Id originally purchased it from MacMall the exchange in store would be for a refurbished MBP, not a brand new one. Further I should call a head to make sure the store had a refurb on hand or to have them order one for me just in case. As I didn't want a refurb if I could avoid it I ordered a new one from MacMall and sent the existing one back as a return (under 14 days) instead of an exchange.

Summarizing: The Sleep Wake Failure seems to occur in PowerNap capable macs running 10.9 with USB devices attached (hub or otherwise). If the computer is put to sleep with USB drives attached it will sponaously reboot while sleeping.

There are other reports of spontaneous reboots while running (likely kernal panics) and crashes without USB drives attached but none of those reports have provided a Sleep Wake Failure report to suggest it's related to this exact issue.

It's worth noting at the bottom of a Sleep Wake Failure report is well tell you what USB devices are attached should you be troubleshooting this yourself.
