"Cannot play video - The Connected display is not supported" error message using Netflix 5.0.2 on my iPad

I'm running iOS 7.0.3 on my iPhone 4S and iPad (3rd gen) and have just upgraded to the current version of the Neflix app available in the Canadian App Store (5.0.2).

Although all other apps I've tried (e.g. Podcast, VLC) are able to properly output video & audio directly to my TV using the HDMI adapter (i.e. NOT via an Apple TV), the Netflix app pops up the error message "Cannot play video - The connected display is not supported". If I start a video and then plug the HDMI cable in, it will play for a few seconds and then halt with the same error message.

Netflix & Apple were supposed to have been working together to fix the previous issue with this scenario which was causing audio to be output but no video. The current Netflix app update was released yesterday and seems to have taken a step backward.

When I contacted Netflix support, they indicated that they have done whatever can be done from their side and this is now Apple's issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Kiron

Hi memphman,

I just did what you said in your post and it worked perfectly!!!!! I came back to reply right away.

We have been trying to watch netflix on the tv through the ipad for months, thought we could not.

Thank you very much for your post!!🙂🙂

I tried to figure out how to give you a green check mark for 10 points because you totally fixed my problem but I couldn't. 🙂🙂

Hi Memphman,

I also folowed your instructions, and was able to view Netflix via AirPlay - no cables!! Thanks SO much for posting!!

For those who might not have been able to get it to work, I found there was a specific order in which to do it.

First, load Netflix on your device. Second, start playing the show you want to watch. Third, swipe up to select AirPlay.

It didn't work for me when I AirPlayed first, then loaded Netflix - said unsupported.

Hope that helps more people. I wanted this method because now I can watch Netflix from the UK on my TV using a VPN 🙂

Hi neilgphoto,

There just must be something wrong with my device, or my HDMI adapter or something. I tried your order of things. I started playing the video I wanted to watch, then plugged in my HDMI adapter into the iPad, all the while my audio cord was plugged in. It played wonderfully.... for about 10 seconds, then it came up with the "video display is not supported" message. What on earth is going on?!?! Nothing is working for me 😟 Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me. Neither Netflix nor Apple is helpful in this problem.
