Audio playback problems in Safari since Mavericks upgrade

I've been having intermittent audio problems in Safari ever since upgrading to Mavericks on my iMac.

Google Play Music doesn't make any sound at all in Safari. Works fine in Firefox.

Downloading audio clips/mp3 playback in Safari has intermittent clicks/pops & sounds terrible.

Tried installing latest version of Flash player...no help.

Everything used to be fine before upgrading to Mavericks.

What gives?

I appreciate everyone's input, but for me, neither of the tips given here have fixed the problem. Also, Flash obviously isn't the issue here. I'm mostly having issues with the SoundCloud widget (not the actual website itself strangely) and the audio demos on Native Instruments' official website. I'm guessing these are HTML5? Maybe Javascript, I don't know.

switching off "stop plugins to save power" in preferences worked for me also. But I like to keep this feature on in general, because it does a good job preserving battery life on my Macbook Pro when I'm surfing. A quick search led to a more permanent solution which allows you to keep the feature on, but selectively turn it off just for the google play web page. Link below

I also had trouble playing music in Safari (but worked in Chrome) - I kept on getting message telling me there was some trouble with Flash and that I should reload page. So I activated HTML5 Audio in Google Play Music app, which I did by clicking Settings (cog), then Labs, and lastly selected Enabled. Don't forget to save settings. ;-)

The reason for trying HTML5 Audio was because I don't like Flash and want to keep the power saving setting for it.
