Brother ds-600 Scanner not found in Mavericks

I had installed a Brother DS-600 mobile scanner in OS X 10.8 with no problems. Now I upgraded to Mavericks. I have reinstalled the latest driver from Brother for 10.9 support (Mavericks)

The Scanner is not seen at all in Image Capture or under Printers/Scanners. I do see a shared brother MFC machine on the network but that is another computer in another room. Not sure what else to look for. Tried different USB ports, new cable, reinstalled driver twice, nothing - like it does not exist.

Any help appreciated.

FWIW, Brother has this posted on their website (which does not even suggest they are working on correcting the problem):

Title:

I have upgraded my Macintosh to OS X 10.9, and now I cannot scan using the Image Capture software.

Description:

This issue occurs because the ICA scanner driver required by the Image Capture software is not available for your Brother machine. Please use other TWAIN compliant software such as Presto! PageManager® 9.

The ICA scanner driver is also not available for OS X 10.8 or earlier. However, the Image Capture software may work on OS X 10.8 or earlier if the TWAIN scanner driver is used instead of the ICA scanner driver.

I contacted Brother and finally got the scanner working via Presto PageManager. I had to change the source.

Select File, Select Source, DS600(not BrotherTwain) and the scanner will be recognized.

Life saver. Been struggling with this for a while. Works like an absolute charm just as you described.

I'd like to add that I tried the software from PageManager but I could only come across an outdated version. This link was posted in one of these threads

It may have been in this thread but I can't remember. It's taken every bit of effort and energy I have to avoid going outside just to drop kick this thing.

If you click on the scanner drivers there's a PageMaster version that will automatically download. I installed that, restarted the computer and then followed your instructions. Works perfectly.

Thanks.

Pagemanager can be found (free light versions) for the most part, looking around. i also discovered that if you have a full version of Adobe Acrobat (not the reader), you cna scan directly from Adobe without the problem happening. Pagemanager is a pretty weak application adn multiple steps to etract the files. Acrobat is pretty poweerfula tool, but it all depends on what you are using the scanner for.

I'm happy to report I have this working on 10.9!

Here are the steps I went through.

#1 Installed the 10.9 drivers from the Brother website

#2 Followed the directions here http://macmanus.nl/2013/11/28/use-unsupported-scanner-in-mavericks/

I installed the corresponding packages from here http://www.ellert.se/twain-sane/ instead of the ones linked in the instructions. But I did all of them in the same order.

#3 Installed the Twainbridge fix package from here http://janegil.net/2014/01/twain-scanners-in-os-x-maverick/

Nothing was working until I did step #3. I'm not sure if all of the steps are necessary. This is just the order in which I tried things. I had to "allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere" in security & privacy settings.

After step #3 I was able to add the scanner in system preferences->printers & scanners. After I added it, I ran the calibration tool provided by Brother. Now I can use the Image Capture app.

Hope this helps other people as this was a pain to get working!
