OSX Mavericks does not detect external monitor

After upgrading my MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2010, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB) to OSX 10.9, my Mac no longer detects my Cinema HD Display. Any help much appreciated.

Howdy ProfPutr,

It sounds like your monitor was workinf fine before you upgraded to OS X 10.9 but now is not recognized. I recommend the troubleshooting steps from this article named:

Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573#5

No video or no signal, image distortion, "snow," or flickering

Check connections

When using an external display be sure to check the following:

  1. If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
  2. Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
  3. Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
  4. Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
  5. If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.

Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.

  6. If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).

Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:

  1. Start up in Safe Mode.
  2. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  3. Choose Displaysfrom the View menu to open the preferences pane.
  4. Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
  5. Restart your computer.

All the best,

We have now had two display monitor adapters stop working after updates. The first was on a 2009 MacbookPro when we upgraded to new software. We paid £65 for an HDMI to Mini Display Port adapter and when we spoke to apple they would only help if we paid their support fees(£30 I believe). They're not stupid, they know what they are doing and that it will make some hardware obsolete. They said Apple Software was not under warranty just hardware and blamed our ‘Old’ Mac hardware(3yrs old at the time). Yet when we then bought the latest adapter, it worked fine with the new update.

We are now experiencing the same issue with our new Thunderbolt to DVI adapter after our latest update on our 3yr old imacs.

They(Apple) are ripping the **** out of us consumers. Our entire studio was all Apple, now only our desktops are as they no longer provide the Premium service that got them where they are today. Everyone has gone Samsung phones & tablets. Watch the demise of Apple Pro Hardware people, it's going to happen at this level of service.

For what it's worth I had the same issue whereby the monitor was detected but the cinema display was blank (black) like it was turned off, but for the last 4 hours it appears it's been fixed through trial and error.

  • I am running a 27-inch display across my MacBook Pro 15" (2011), the monitor is ~ same year (HD6750M)
  • The computer is now running Yosemite (note: I do not recall whether the detection issue was a problem, or not, on the previous OS),
  • THe computer is otherwise running factory set/built hardware, no changes,
  • The connection between monitor and computer is via the Thunderbolt port,
  • I would explain my issue of "detection" as intermittent given there was a time the laptop was successful in detecting and displaying the screen as a second monitor. It has always detected the monitor, just not displayed anything on it!

The solution, in may case: After trial and error, as well as the suggestions I acted upon as posted here which came to no avail - I routed the power supply to the monitor directly to a new power source and not on the wall sockets that supply all of my other devices. In other words I used an extension cable from another source in my office that did not carry supply to another or neighbouring device in the list of equipment I have permanently on: modem, router, PC (yikes), printer, another monitor, etc, etc) and used that as my only power source to the cinema display.

The operation has proved successful in my case so I posted my response here for others in the hope it too helps you. Good luck!
