Any advise, after intalling Mavericks my dvd/cd player quit working in my macbook pro.
I've had a similar issue with the Superdrive on my iMac.
Disappeared off the desktop (with a disc in), and wasn't detected by Disk Utility or the System Profiler.
After doing several Restarts with no luck, I did a complete power down and Reboot, and the problem resolved itself completely.
So although the problem is a real one, the solution might be very simple. Annoying though.
Same problem here, on a macbook pro 2009, the DVD player doesn't read any dvds, and ejects the disc after a few tries.
I have tried everything listed on the forums, and nothing.
**** Apple, I needed the dvd player for work, and now I'm sold without it!
Hi, I upgraded to Maverics on my Imac 2007, same issue. Can't load any music or new software. What did Apple tell you to do? I'd appreciate it...cannot be the hardware unless the new software doesn't support older hardware, with these many complaints....why hasn't anyone at Apple replied on this forum??
I have experienced the same problem since upgrading to Maverics a couple of weeks ago. I can play DVDs on my fall 2009 macbook pro, either alone or working through my external monitor with the lid of the laptop closed. If I have the laptop open and plug into an external projector the DVD player crashes. So here is my suggestion (which I have not had a chance to try yet): with the power supply and external projector connected, close the top of the laptop and then insert the DVD. You will need either an external keyboard, or a bluetooth pointer to navigate the menus, but it should work.
Considering the occasions when it crashes, and the comments of some others on this forum, it seems as though the DVD player running on Mavericks is just not compatible with multiple displays.
Has anyone experienced a DVD freeze since the 10.9.2. update? The problem appers to be fixed but since it was intermittent it is too early to tell but I have not seen the problem since the upgrade. (Late 2011 13” MacBook Pro)
I don't know if my failure of the dvd player is due to maveriks or maveriks last upgrade a couple days ago or maybe it's just old age. It was sudden. I can't even insert the disc. It goes in half way and hits a wall. I have tried several fixes and was very hopeful that the ones here would help, but nothing has helped. I'm very disappointed. This machine is a mbp 2007 so I suppose it is an "old age" issue. It's easy to say get an external drive, and I may have to do so, but I've been looking and most of them do not work with older machines. I however like my internal drive and am very disappointed that the new machines don't come with them anymore and I like my large screens and even those are not offered in the newer machines. I have upgraded my machine a little and it is still less expensive than buying a new one or a refurbished older one. Anyway, I guess I am at an impass. If I can find the right internal drive to install, I know someone who can do it for me. Right now I have no other way to install my discs or information from them into my computer. I'm kind of stuck now.
My 2010 imac experienced very similar issues since upgrading to Mavericks.
The only difference is that some DVDs will load with no issue. Others, especially the gold DVDs, will spin a bit, make a rattle, then eject. This is also the case with some CDs.
For those that say the drive is on the way out, it may be, but upgrading an OS shouldn't accelerate it (much the same as when my external died just after upgrading to Mavericks).
I have tried:
Lens cleaner
credit card trick
SMC reset
PRAM reset
NVRAM reset
Yelling obscenities at it
A nice little Terminal command which forces an eject (even with nothing in it).
None of these things worked (although the yelling helped psychologically).
The last thing on the list will take 7-10 working days: a cheap, slimline external DVD burner for AU$35 - USB3, no less. I'm sure this will work just fine.
Dibenkorn, no the latest update did not fix it.
Let me know where you find it. I've been looking for both an external drive that will work with MBP 2009 unibody 17" and an internal replacement. Most of the ext ones I have found say only for newer machines that don't come with an internal superdrive. I want to make sure I have the correct one before I order. I would still for convenience like my internal one replaced, but I'm not quite positive which one to get. Thanks. I tried ifix it but didn't see one for my machine. I emailed them but have not gotten any response so far that I can see. Thank you,
I found a cheap Samsung external, slimline dvd writer on eBay for AU$35 with free delivery.
It worked straight out of the box. All the disks that my internal either had trouble with, or just eject out of hand, loaded and ripped perfectly.
Just look up external dvd on eBay.
I was able to bypass the crash of the DVD player by inserting the disc in the drive and closing the display on my MacBook Pro (2009); you have to have to be attached to your power supply and the external monitor/projector for this to work. I was able to use both a Targus bluetooth remote/laser pointer in mouse mode, and the IR remote from an old iMac to control the DVD player and have the video display on the external monitor.
However that was a temporary fix. The real fix was to reset the system management controller (twice). The problems with the DVD player crashing, as well as other minor annoyances that had started occuring (e.g. not automatically connecting to known wireless networks), were all fixed by that one simple step. Yesterday I was able to run a DVD with screen mirroring on the MacBook and the digital projector and no problems with the DVD player software.
If you haven't done this (http://osxdaily.com/2010/03/24/when-and-how-to-reset-your-mac%E2%80%99s-system-m anagement-controller-smc/) I would suggest you do before you run out and invest in an external DVD drive. You might have to do it any time you install something major. I am suspecting the installers are what causes the problem not the actual update. But that doesn't really matter; the fix is simple.
Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM also worked perfectly for me. GOTO: @baltwo's comment (second one on the post). I'm on a mid-2009 13" Macbook Pro. I actually upgraded initially to Mavericks from Snow Leopard without any issues with the SuperDrive, but the older hdd couldn't seem to handle Mavericks. I installed a new 7200rmp 1TB 32MB cache drive and used a usb install drive to run a clean install of Mavericks on it along with the latest TimeMachine backup. My mac was running like it was new, and then I realized the SuperDrive was 'dead'.
Make sure after you shutdown, hit the power button and then immediately hold Command (⌘), Option, P, and R and don't release until you hear the startup theme. The mac will almost appear to be shutting down again and then the SUperDrive should wake up.
As a side note - I had a new SuperDrive, anti-static mat/bracelet and spudger tool in my Amazon cart and decided to do one more internet search to fix it. I thank the internet gods for website discussion boards! DO NOT CLICK "PLACE ORDER"! DO NOT drive to the Apple store. Your drive most likely still works!
This is exactly my issue... I upgraded my OS X initially and maintained functionality of my internal Superdrive but after a Boot Camp Windows 7 install gone terribly wrong, I had to completely wipe my computer and do a clean Mavericks install... unfortunately knocking out my disc drive's functionality... frustrating, too because I had used it less than 2 hours earlier when my laptop was (albeit unsuccessfully) installing Windows 7.
That being said, I was so so so hoping your advice would work for me & it doesn't appear to have solved anything. I noticed your comment is fairly recent... only a few months ago. Has the issue returned? Any other pointers?
I have the same issue with my drive won't completely put a disc in and eject functions and other ideas above don't work. This is just after installing Windows 8 on the bootcamp partition. I am running Mavericks OS X 10.9.5 on a 21.5-inch, Mid 2010 iMac. The original issue I had loading Windows 8 from the XP version that was on it was that the boot camp drive wouldn't show up on the mac side and the win side wouldn't show the mac side drive. Also it wants to start windows automatically so I have to hold option at restart in order to show my drives in order to run from the side I would like.
My solution is going to be uninstalling bootcamp and do a refresh on the computer with all data in order to see if my drive will work again. I don't use the windows side enough as my scanner is now obsolete with windows 8, and my husband has a laptop if I needed it.
As I search for a solution to this question, I repeatedly see your response with these links. I should say useless links. What do you do? Just go through all the questions for this and reply with those? They've been proven to not fix this issue. Get a life.
I did NOT have a problem with my dvd player (assumingly the superdrive). But I did have a new superdrive installed as my dvd player stopped working after almost 5 years. So I just wonder how old some of your dvd players are? Sounds like from the posts here that DVD failure did have something to do with the new system. I am these days almost afraid to upgrade when a new system suddenly is announced. Never know what is or isn't going to work after upgrades to the system. I waited a long time before I installed mavericks. I don't even know if the next one soon to come out will be able to work in my older mac. I have my fingers crossed that it will or else I'll have to stay where I am now.
