Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

I never really understand why people come into threads and say "Hey mines fine so you are all imagining it!" If yours is fine then good for you, you're one of the lucky ones but others have real problems with theirs and it isn't imagination.
Most here have other Ipads and Iphones so it's not like this is their first device. I have the 4 and Mini and Iphone 5 here with me, I've also owned the Iphone 4 and the original Ipad none of them have this issue so please don't try and make out it's not real as its extremely rude and condecending. It's obvious when using something like Gmail, Flipboard, or bringing up the keyboard in Safari it isn't just staring at a blank white screen otherwise people wouldn't ever see it as most don't use their Ipads to look at blank white screens.
People also have had the large blue stripe down the side where it looks like the screen is falling away, which is what I had on my first Air so it isn't just one type of problem.
Yours looks fine from that picture but unfortunately photos aren't really a great way to show things it can make them look better or even make Ipads without issues look like they do have them.
No one here is imagining anything you just got a good one that we all wish we got.
It's not an optical illusion. I've found that the best way to illustrate the screen problem is to save a picture of a large black and white checkerboard pattern. Zoom into it so that the boxes are a little under an inch in size. From there, you can drag a white box from one side of the screen to the other and you will actually see it going from yellowish to white.
Not at all an optical illusion IMO otherwise that thread would have died right after the OP started it.
Given I can immediately see the yellowish tint on your screenie, one can figure how it looks in real when you hold you pad in your hands...: simply yellow. Just like mine.
Beside this,
the issue has nothing to do with magnets, I never used any of them.
Again, the iPad itself is nothing but a screen, a display. Thus none of us should accept to live with a screen that isnt as good as we thought it would be when we cashed out $800.
A friend of mine bought a chinese no-name pad, looking really good -of course nowhere like Apple- but yet a flawless screen, he paid $160 ! And we should say amen with a prodcut we paid more than four times this price to get stucked with a defect dispay ? That's just impossible. Sorry, not an optical illusion.
I'd still add this : we're still a long way from Apple making a move about all that issue, although some folks reported in this thread that a couple of Genius had already admitted that they were facing loads of returns all around the world. Proof of that is they exchange the pads.
We're not here to do any bashing, we just want to sort this, eventually leave track of our issue and perhaps keep the techs's attention...
I believe we all wished we never had to comme here and post our disappointment, we all wished we could enjoy our pads -and in my case WORK with- rather that spending our precious time on this forum...
Hi, everybody. I still suspect that the problem is stress, due to the logic board.
None of the units with yellow screen problem have a sharp boundary of the yellow part to the blue part, but they fade out. The photos online look really like the pressure distribution chart. The yellow part, I think, is because the pressure giving by the logic board.
After reading all your posts, I'm 50/50 about returning mine to Walmart since my issue is only the black/blue vertical line and not any tint problem. I'm getting tired of constantly doing work arounds with my expensive Apple products. I am deep into the eco system with iPad1, iPhone 4, Apple TV, Mac Air, Mac. The only reason I got the new iPad Air is because the apps are crashing on the iPad1, otherwise, it has worked perfectly since I bought it. I also have some issues with Air Play to the Apple TV but only on some sites. The new Air does a great job on Air Play. I have a Logitech keyboard coming when Amazon gets them in and had hoped to actually see if I could use the new Air as a laptop and sell my Mac Air. I can see the screen better on an iPad.
I have time to return the iPad Air to Walmart so will figure this out in time.
Here we go again, the minute anyone tries to offer a balanced view they are shot down in flames. So, I had the first ever Windows iPod in 2002 which failed within 3 days (with a sad iPod icon, work that out when no one had ever seen it before) but was immediately replaced and worked beautifully for 3 years until I dropped it, I've had the original iPhone, iPhone 3, 4 and 5. My first Mac was a G3 iBook then several MBP's and now an iMac and, yes, my first iPad!! So please don't lecture me as if I'm some newbie, and I'm the first to say that Apple could do a helluva lot better in many areas!!
If you read my post properly I said that there are many genuine problems, I'm not disputing that, but there is a tendancy for some people to magnify things simply because they are expecting theirs to be faulty given the number of posts about it. Mine was bought on day 1 and in my earlier posts you will see that I was concerned about having the bookspine shadow, but now I'm not so sure and my photo would seem to show no particular fault.
The upshot of this is if you have a problem return it, what do you really expect Apple to do about it? Issue a recall? No they won't. But they will replace it, and continue to do so if you still have problems. One thing that's hard to knock is their customer service even if you sometimes need to press the issue a little!
@FuelFlow - I knew you'd see a more yellow left side - as I said some would on my post. I also said that when looking at the screen with the naked eye this is not visible (I'm a photographer so colour casts matter to me).
I was one of people who queue up at apple store for Ipad Air launch from 5am ,after i got back home and turn it on and use safari or anything with white background then i notice yellow tint right away therefore i have return my first one next day ( that was before i even search online about this problem ) then this is my 2nd one ( same yellow tint ) which i have been using it for over a week and the problem is still there. ( this is not my apple product and i got mini and iphone )
You didn't bring a balanced view, you came in saying people were imagining it. Thats not balanced. Again if you can't see a problem then you don't have one. People don't want to get stuck in an exchange cycle if theres an inherant desgin flaw. Your screen looks yellow but it also looks uniform as in the whole screen, the main problem is people have half a screen with a yellow tint and half with a lighter white tint thats when it becomes an issue.
Theres always a sheep shill in every one of these threads trying to put down those with issues. I wonder how much it pays.
Also if thats the best photo you can manage I'm doubting the photographer comment.
I didn't just come in, if you bother to read through the whole thread you'll see I've been posting a long time ago! And again I did not say poeple were imagining it, I'm saying that for some the problem might not be quite what they think it is.
And you can insult me if you like, I havn't insulted you - poor photo was taken with crappy iPhone 5 camera on the spur of the moment, several times, trying to avoid the moire. Forums are such a great place to poke at someone when you don't have to see them face to face!
Let's all keep on focus gents if you will...
Up to this point, our main concern remains to find out if the darker/yellowish tint is an exceptionnal issue, or if it's a widespread problem -which I personnaly fear. Perhaps linked with new IGZO technology which had been implemented with the iPad Air and the upcoming Mini with Retina display.
My fear is based on numerous statements that had been made that after several exchanges, the issue is still there. Worse, that on 10 expo models in AppleStore or resellers, 7 out of these featured the yellow tint.
THAT is the issue, and we must keep at it, beside all the hassle and our sourness to try to get our pads exchanged in the meanwhile.
On my side, I will keep you posted as soon as I receive my (2nd) replacement.
I also posted on page 2 or 3 about this. I'm now at SIX ipads returned and over 100 miles of driving between apple and target stores in the US. The best sample of iPad air that i found was one that has the dark edges (slightly). This particular iPad was acceptable to keep.. however make no mistake it DOES have the problem. This was on my friends iPad air.
Personally I have not been able to find a good copy of an iPad air that does not have severe book spine shadow OR dark bands on the display itself.
Imagine the time apple takes to ensure the chamfered edge on the bezel, etc. etc.. the attention to detail in every aspect of the iPad... except THE most important part of the entire device... the screen itself.
This problem IS widespread... I've talked to people at target stores in the US who have also been swapping them like apple store has been.
my advice to anyone with an iPad air that is displeased even slightly with their product... take back for full refund and wait until the end of the year. If you absolutely must have an iPad air at this time.. then keep returning them until you get a good one that you like with acceptable issues on the screen. Even if you have to return it 10 times.. do it. The problems with the screen are not acceptable and no one should be forced to use something with clear defects in its display if they do not want to.... specially considering the price. You can get a dell venue pro 8 with full os win8.1 on the device and perfect screens for only $259.
I'll be waiting another week and go in for my 7th iPad air and report back. Until then good luck everyone in finding an iPad air that is "acceptable" since I'm convinced that 100% of all iPads at this time are affected.. only some worse than others. DO NOT accept an iPad air with a problem, if it bothers you.. return it.
I think it is reasonable to assume these problems are affecting many units where people just aren't noticing it. No shame in that, it is simply that the brain interprets what it sees with flexibility (that's a good thing!).
The only reason it initially caught my eye (after 5 days of using it) is because I was reading text on a website which went to the very edge of the display. I slowly noticed the "book spine" effect and then a few minutes later I noticed the left side yellow tint as I was flipping the orientation of the iPad to check out the book spine effect.
However, after I noticed it there was absolutely no missing it, and I couldn't believe I was oblivious to it for 5 days. Even if I could ignore it, we all (happily) pay a premium for Apple's products and should fully expect the displays they use to not have these defects, and if/when they do Apple should quickly rectify the situation for those who see them.
Can someone explain this "book spine" effect I keep hearing about? Is that basically a dark shadow along the left (or right, top or bottom I suppose) side of the iPad giving the ffect of a shadow?
If so, I def. have that and now that I noticed it I can't stop noticing it. And like I said yesterday, the AT&T store doesn't have any Air's in stock and I only have 8 days left before my 14 days are up to exchange and I truthfully hope to not have to give up the iPad since I really want it for my travels in the next few weeks. And the closest Apple store is 145 miles away in Chicago =/
Thanks.
Same issue with my iPad Air.
I'm very disappointed and really considering that Apple only cares about getting the best deals from it's suppliers and care little for QC.
The yellow grey banding down the right of the screen made me very angry. Apple charged me over $1000 for a cellular iPad Air / 128Gb and I get what I consider a second quality product? Far out not good enough. Still waiting for my refund from Apple and I may try an iPad Mini Retina, but if it's rubbish quality like the iPad Air... That's it Apple you loose me as a customer.
While I'm on my rant, the new iPad feels terrible. It feels cheap and hollow. To compare, it feels exactly the opposite of the iPhone 5s which I do have and I am quite happy with.
Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
