Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?

Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?

iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

Apple probably has already read this thread, yet I don't think they'll do anything official. This problem is so wide-spread. An official report will draw everyone's attention on this. Including the media as well as the customers who got this problem but haven't noticed it. People will be swarming in front of Apple stores crying for a thorough check, comparison, replacement and refund.

Guys, girls,

I am sure Apple has already read the issues described in this thread. But that doesn't mean Apple isn't going to do anything about it. They read it, but it "takes time" for the action to be taken as it's not a defcon 1 alert. With big companies it takes time to collect, verify, investigate problems reported by users... This is not a little company in someone's garage where he/she can make changes instantly. Give it some time and Apple will do something about it.

Also note that I doubt the assembly plant checks for every single screens for flaws. There is too much time consumed to do that. I can tell you a thang or two about QC in general. I worked for Hewlett Packard when I was very young... Our job was to inspect the computer box for proper packing, making sure all accessory items are included, check for the functionality of the PC, inspect for cosmetic damage off the conveyor... We only randomly pick several out of maybe 15~ 20 PC's. All the ones missed will go out to the trucks for delivery. So some PC's will have items missing, some will have scratches or other damage, one of them may have OS missing altogether, one with defective hard drive or memory, etc etc. I am sure it's the same with Apple iPads.

If they were to check every single iPad for visual inspection of the screen the labor will be fortune. Apple will have to pay the Chinese company more money, probably 4 times more.

Apple obviously doesn't want to spend that much money... they will want to keep cost down and produce more goods, even though they turn out crappy products. Apple is going for the volume, money hungry. Quantity over Quality.......

Got that?

ehhh hehehehehehehe

ok i just got back and testing my 3rd iPad air about 10 mins. The apple guy seem to knowledge about this issue and he changed me a new one without asking much ( the cutomer service is top notch i would say as he was nice, happy to sort it out and didn't give me hard time or telling me that i have an optical illusion )

This one is better so far , the yellow tint is uniform whole screen and much better than first 2 , i think i can live with this one . the s/n this one is DMPLG but my other 2 were DMPLK .

ps. but the ' Auto Brightness' doesn't work still so i guess its software issue 7.0.3 with iPad Air

Good evening everybody. Since 1 week I have my iPad Air and I love all of it except the screen. My screen is also yellow on the left side in portrait mode. Today I've called Apple Support to change my device and the new one was listed in my Order History immediately. When I've called the Support no one asks questions like "did you reset your device" or something like that. I think that the issue is already known by Apple.

I hope my new unit could probably be a new charge or have a screen from a different manufactur.

My current Is an 32GB, Wi-Fi Only Air in Space Grey. Serial Number starts with DMPLD.

What's DMPLD. Had read a post where all the Serials are listed with manufactures etc. But mine is not in there?!

Have ordered it in the Apple Online Store 1 day after the official release. So my feeling is that the very first charge of iPad Airs are all with the screen issues. Currently my new iPad, that the Support reserved for me, is still not ready to ship. 5-7 days ATM. But I'll wait for it. The air is a very nice device and I won't miss it.

Of course this is all speculation. But maybe apple resolved the issues with the screens and the long shipping times are because of that.

Hopefully we all get our new iPads without any issues.

Sorry for my bad English sometimes. Don't call me a dude, I'm from Germany. ;-)

@Jommy999

For me the Auto Brightness is also not working correctly. Yesterday I've calibrated it, but after that nothing happens.

On my 5s it's working flawlessly. So I guess it's an bug in 7.0.3.

My iPad has a yellow tint to the left and a slight blue one to the right - however, most of the screen is very cool and very, very pretty.

I still went ahead and got a replacement from John Lewis. This unit, though a little more uniform, is warm and yellow in it's entirety (though a little brigther). It was also damaged out of the box. I'll sent the replacement back and keep the original. It's little ununiform, but cool none the less........

And I don't think it's the glue - the digitizer/glass is seperate from the LCD in all iPads.

Someone awhile back posted that it could be because of the component behind the display. I might have to agree. I haven't seen a tear down of the ipad air yet, but it would be safe to assume that the battery is on one side, similar to the iPhone, and the logic board is on the other. Maybe something that is putting pressure behind the left side of the screen, or something that is getting really hot, is causing the change in hue/white balance.

Or I could be completely wrong and it's just bad manufacturing, but I don't think it is on apples part, probably LG or one of the other screen manufacturers. I remember going through this exact same thing back in my Android days with an HTC sensation. Some of them had LG displays, some of them had Sharp displays. While the LGs were cooler in white balance temperature, it didn't have good color resolution and it had bad gradient lines, like you were looking at a 16 bit BMP image. The sharp was a bit warmer in white balance (but probably more accurate) and had perfect color resolution, full 32 bit. Since then, I don't trust anything made by LG.

Hopefully my replacement ipad doesn't have an LG screen, but from what I read, 80% of the ipad screens are LG, while the rest are either samsung or sharp.

It's a rather long story and I've been folllowing this thread for a while now, but I just need to get this out.

I purchased my iPad Air 16GB Wifi Silver/White with Educational pricing on the Online Apple Store on 03/11/2013. I recieved the iPad two days later only to find the 'book spine' tint on the left side of the display in portrait. No matter how much I try to delude myself that it isn't that I just couldn't stop staring at it. I took it to my local Apple store (a licensed reseller) the next day and they happily gave me a replacement two days later, but the 'book spine' tint still remains on the left side of the display (in portrait) on my replacement. The tint is not as bad as my first iPad Air, but it's distracting because I can see it's there. I took it back to the store the next day but this time they weren't sure if they could give me another replacement because they couldn't see the tint clearly themselves, and told me to come back this Thursday (14/11/2013) when an engineer staff will be in.

I got fed up with this and decided to ask for a refund on the Online Apple Store on (10/11/2013). I got the confirmation and was asked to wait for a phone call 'shortly after' to arrange a courier to pick up my iPad. The call from Ups however happened during the middle of a lecture I was in the next day on Monday morning (11/11/2013 11am) and later that day at 3pm when I was in another lecture, so obviously I couldn't pick up the calls and missed them both. I then missed the third call at 10am this morning (12/11/2013) because I was in a seminar. I listened to the voicemail they left after the seminar and was told they weren't going to contact me any further, meaning I have no one to take my iPad back to Apple and they expect it by the 24th of November. The most frustrating thing about this ordeal is that I can't call Ups back because they were using a private number, and if I call Apple Support I'll be charged for a ridiculous amount for the phone call because it's a 0800 number. I'm glad that Apple are extending the returns date to 7th January 2014 due to the Holiday Season as I have more time sort this mess out.

This is the first iPad I've ever purchased and I am deeply disappointed.

Education pricing only applies to computers, not phones or tablets. You paid the same as the rest of us I'm pretty sure. Anyway, my advice is to call AppleCare for replacements, since they can't see your device, they most of the time just trust you that the problem is real and send you out a replacement. In the apple store they are sometimes more reluctant with screen issues that are hard to see due to the bright lighting.

Hi,

I don't think the yellow tint have things to do with the quality is resemble is Foxcon!

The Foxcon company have one of the best resemble quality! For 6 years, all of the i-products came from them.

This time, the screen of iPad air is not pasted on the gorilla glass, I think the resemblance is just connect and and unify.

Obviously, the screen issue have something to do with:

1.the design: apple reduced the LEDs for lighting the screen, cut halo of the ones used in iPad 4. And only put them in one side-- that's maybe part of why the yellow tint comes out.

2.the display company's QC. The displays are mainly come from 3 different providers: Samsung(serial starts as dmql), LG (dmpl), Sharp (dlxl?).

All of these serials have a chance being almost perfect screens ( I don't know how many, but I saw good ones from different serials so far), but there are more yellow tint ones( some are very serious, some are not so much). Mine is dmql from samsung, very yellowish! And 100% brightness didn't help( again proved the glue theory wrong).

3. QC of apple, QC of apple care. Lots of "apple-carers" have the altitude of " all or nothing".

Sometimes apple use software to cure a flaw design of hardware, like the signal issue on iPhone 4. It works!

Is there any hope to have a iOS update about the screen adjustment to fix that? I would like to take it...

Would be interested to hear from anyone who traded in their yellow Airs for rMini's, see if there is the same problem. The Airs in my local store all had yellow left hand sides while the Mini's on show today had really good uniform screens. Would be interested to see if they are just more careful with their Mini display units or if the rMini just have better screens.

Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
