Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

While Apple doesn't recognize (internally at least) this defect in the iPad, they will continue by saying that the screen is fine.
This is a shame and an abuse, all the people that we can't go to an Apple store will have to stay with a defective product?
Exactly, why pay a premium price. Where is the quality control? Apple is hedging that people will just learn to live with 90% of these flawed screens. I have a 64gb rMini that has the off-white tinting on the top left. Distracting when reading, especially in landscape two column mode. I own a 15" retina pro, thunderbolt, appleTV, appleAirPort, and iphone 5, and so am very familiar with Apple products and in general like them. But I am done paying premium prices and then learning to just live with the imperfections (like the dust under the screen of my Thunderbolt). If this device were $200 less like every other tablet out there then I could deal with it, but as it is I am returning and getting something else. I dont even want to deal with replacing it over and over to find a good one - not worth my time.
Hi, I'm on about Air #5. We actually found my girlfriend a "perfect" one from Target. Lucky her! It's a DMTLJ. I've also seen a DLXL (Sam's) that was great. Using the Chipmunk site I found both of these to be week 41 units. I haven't been able to find a week 41 in 64 Wifi yet so I'm still on the hunt. Please lemme know if you have a week 41 (any serial) and lemme know if it's good/bad. This mess has me thinking about a rooted kindle HDX. I've also reverted back to a iP5 after not being able to lock down a good 5S screen. All of this is very disappointing. Not sure why Apple can't get consistent screens made.
Thanks for mentioning the chipmunk site. My first ipad had a perfect screen but I returned it do to a problem with tmobile. I wish I had kept the device because the replacement definitely has a yellow tint for about 90% of the screen. Both units were from production week 42 (I.e., Oct) at the Foxconn plant. 128 GB, grey
I tried the "wrap in towel at full brightness" with the mini retina and it made no difference in the yellow bottom 1/3rd.
I ended up returning it and getting another via personal pickup at an Apple Store. No yellow hue but it had a very noticeable dark corner in the bottom right. I returned it the same day. Trying again via an online order.
I'm now very sorry for people who have been through this in the past! I had the iPad 1, iPad 3 (bought on launch day), an iPhone 4S and all the screens are decent. I would have never imagined that I'd go through 3 iPad Airs and 2 Mini Retinas and be unsatisfied with the displays.
Thought this article was appropriate for this thread:
I haven't heard of that one. I for one have reset my ipad a few times just to check, because you never know if the backlight just needs to be reinitialized or something, but it hasn't helped. This is definitely a hardware screen deficiency unfortunately.
I purchased an iPhone 5s 64GB Space Gray and an iPad Air 64GB Space Gray from the online store within days of each other.
Out of the box, it was clear I had a defective 5s screen. It was 2 toned - the bottom was bright white and gradually as you moved toward the top it became increasingly yellow until you reached the top where there was an approximately 2-3cm line of yellow tint running across the screen. Anywhere there was white, which is practically everywhere in iOS 7, it was quite annoying. I called Apple for a replacement, and they're going to pick it up this coming Monday.
My iPad exhibited the same discoloration except it was along the left hand side of the screen and most prominent in the bottom left corner. Pulling the keyboard up put the yellow tint on full display. My iPad is being picked up today to be returned for a new one.
I'm a bit of an Apple enthusiast and have had every iPhone since the 4S, every iPad since the 2, a Mac Mini, and rMBP. I've never had any problems except for a dead pixel on my rMBP which was too small to complain about. I don't consider myself an overly picky person. These screen defects, however, are testing my patience with a brand that I love. It's unfortunate that not only are we seeing poor quality control but upon multiple returns we STILL can't get proper screens. I'm very nervous about my replacements after reading all the comments in this thread. The last thing I want to play is the un-box, re-box, ship to Apple game. Very discouraging! I hope this gets picked up by the tech media at some point.
j182,
The attached article from Mediapost tells it all. There's no question: the reduced quantity of LEDs resulted in a markedly yellow screen - with the side benefit that the device has a lower temperature and stable battery life.
I'll skip the current generation of iPads until the monitor quality is up to the pure white of the Nexus 7.
****... it's sad to hear the iPad Mini Retina is having the same discoloration problem. Sad Sad. Probably in 6 months all displays will be replaced with Samsung and will have fault-free screen.

Being familiar with Apple products I didn't feel a need to go to an Aple store in search of more info on the product I wanted to purchase. In my case I went to first to a major electronics store. After waiting for ten minutes to talk to a salesperson I asked if they had the specific Air I wanted in stock and he said yes and they would get it from stock. Ten minutes later he shows back up and said they didn't have it in stock and would check for availability at other stores. He said the computer showed it in stock at another location a few miles away. Before I left the store I asked another person to check again that the other store had it in stock. He checked on the computer and said it showed they had 24 in stock. Drove over to that store, waited several mintues to talk to a salesperson, said he would bring one out. He came bake about ten minutes later and said the model I wanted was sold out. At that point I was pretty frustrated but realized an Apple store was less than a mile away. Called them up and asked about the model I wanted and they said they were running low but still had a few left. Drove over there and within 30 seconds of walking in was greeted by an Apple employee, told him what I wanted, and had the new Air in my hands and paid for within the next few minutes. I wish now I would have had them open it so I could have seen it before I took it home but at the time I bought it I hadn't heard of any known problems with the new Air.
The day before I brought it back I called the Apple store to see if I needed to make an appointment with the genius bar because I wanted to exchange the device due to the screen problem. They said they were sorry to hear that I was having a problem and to bring it back and talk to any salesperson there and they would be able to help me.
To me I wouldn't say there are any particular benefits to going the official Apple route as compared to getting the same product elsewhere, it's just in my case I was lucky enough to have an Apple store nearby and didn't recieve any hassle in exchanging my Air.

I thought it was going to be an exciting story but pretty boring. I fell asleep.

I wanna say that I've found the right device for me. Originally I've had an iPad Air, but then I'd seen the mini retina.
Also on my iPad air I had the yellow tint issue that most users have. So I sent it back to Apple and ordered an mini retina. Today it arrive and it's perfect, no yellow tint, shadows, bleeding or something else. Almost perfect.
I don't know if I'm just lucky or it's because a different screen manufactur. Anyway the serial begins with DLXL

Good to hear your Mini 2 is ok. It seems the success rate is a bit higher with the Mini 2 than Air. I think you got the lucky one cause I don't think Apple has actually sign the contract with Samsung to have all Air and Mini displays manufactured by them..

Which would suggest quality control rather than design flaw. I'm not sure which is worse as they both should have been avoidable. My replacement arrives tomorrow. If it's worse than this one it will go straight back.
Good news, people. I received my third iPad from Apple today. I told them I wanted a new unit instead of a replacement unit and they agreed. After sending my second defective unit back to them, they shipped me a brand new one from China via express UPS. Took about three days or so to get to Victoria, Canada and it's perfect... finally! No yellow tint, green, pink, book spines, light bleed, or shadows. It looks great! Serial is DMPL. This goes to show the screen issues are not acceptable and they can prodeuce them without the problems we're seeing.
I feel really bad for folks who are having to go through this even more than I did because I was pretty frustrated with three iPads. Anything more than once is too many, I think. But at least Apple took the complaint seriously. I'd be interested to know if they took the time to make sure my iPad was defect free before shipping or if it was just completely random. I suspect the latter. Anyway, I speculate that if you buy through the Apple online store then you may get better service from the reps over the phone than you will at a genius bar, even if you have to wait a bit longer for your iPad.
Good luck, everyone!!!
