Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

I don't think we should be forced to settle for anything less than what we paid for. If there is a bookspine effect, get it replaced or get your money back. Apple needs to be held accountable for these defects and by settling you are letting them off the hook. It's a pain to go through this (I'm waiting on replacements for my iPhone 5s and Air), but in the end it'll be worth it. Good luck to you.
I had spoken to an adviser in the Regent street store. He said he perfered not to unbox an other ipad air to me as all the devices are the same. He said it is the glue problem. He said it would be gone away in a few weeks time. And there is the Christmas return policy, I would return the device to Apple if the yellow tinit not going away. I believed Apple notices this problem.
As a long time purchaser of Apple products (almost 20 years), I've seen more than my fair share of yellow tinted screens on Cinema Displays, iMacs, MacBook Pro Retinas, iPhones and iPads. What I don't understand is, why? Is this cost cutting by Apple or it's manufacturers? Is it willfull neglegence? I don't know and quite frankly, I'm tired of caring.
I sent back two iPad Airs for this yellow tint. I then promptly went in and was prepared to puchase the Mini, which seemed to have better whites. Then, wait, what's this? only 63% sRGB colour gamut? So the screen is sharper, ok, great. But it's just as dull and lifeless as the original. I'm fed up. Other manufacturers can get their ducks in a row and produce gorgious white clean screens, why not Apple?
Stop failing your customers, Apple.

you should have return or get refund, of course most advisor won't admit about their problem screen as only 1% of us will only see as a problem. most 99% of ppl who bought out there will just use it as it is . i believe it won't go away . i used my Air's yellow tint one side for over week with 100% full brightness and it wasn't change one bit and i have return them ( Covent Garden branch ) and my 3rd one is now uniform and so far so good. i will suggest you return it and get new one better than to try to wait and hope till the problem goes away.

Hi, I'm on about Air #5. We actually found my girlfriend a "perfect" one from Target. Lucky her! It's a DMTLJ. I've also seen a DLXL (Sam's) that was great. Using the Chipmunk site I found both of these to be week 41 units. I haven't been able to find a week 41 in 64 Wifi yet so I'm still on the hunt. Please lemme know if you have a week 41 (any serial) and lemme know if it's good/bad. This mess has me thinking about a rooted kindle HDX. I've also reverted back to a iP5 after not being able to lock down a good 5S screen. All of this is very disappointing. Not sure why Apple can't get consistent screens made.
I have a week 41 production unit of iPad Air 64 GB WiFi white/silver, and the screen is flawless. My first iPad Air had the yellow tint on the left side of the screen (almost half the screen vertically). However, the first iPad Air, which was exchanged no questions asked, was ALSO from week 41 according Chipmunk. Both from the same factory. So I'm afraid the production week, or the serial number, are no indicators of what you might get.
In another matter, a friend of mine received the iPad Mini /w Retina this week, run the image retention test, and his rMini got retention after just 1 minute of running the test and it took 30 seconds for the retention to fade away! No yellow tint discoloration in the display, though. I'm currently waiting for my retina iPad Mini (should arrive Dec 5th). I didn't rush to order it on the day of release, hence the December delivery, so I am hoping it's from a good batch of displays.
The display inconsistencies at Apple are – in my opinion with long history with Apple products – getting worse by each new product launch. I no longer associate the word "premium" with Apple quality (anything with a screen), and will never purchase any Apple product with a display at a place that does not allow hassle-free, no questions asked returns or exchanges.
IMHO, Apple should bury the hatchet with Samsung and source their displays – to my experience, they've been the best, as was the case with a rMBP: it originally had an LG display with image retention, and instead of going down the exchange lottery route, I insisted the rMBP be repaired (the whole screen component was replaced specifically with a Samsung manufactured panel). No issues since, perfect display.
Some of this is OT, but it goes to say I've lost faith in the displays in Apple products – and display is often the most crucial component.
I got mine from Covent Garden Apple store as well and the screen looks good with no yellow tint area or dark book spine effect. The production week is 37 and serial start with DMPLD.
I don't think I have and issue with my vision / eyes and I've checked if any defect on my screen such this yellow tint but really nothing looks wrong. I was thinking to bring it to the Apple Store and compare it with any other iPad air there just in case... But this might looks "funny" to see a guy doing that in the store ...
Convincing images.
The iPhone 5 has very good, consistent color; with the the iPad Air - I'm not sure if I see "yellow" per se, but it's almost as if the screen is underlit. The Air needs brighter LEDs, or more of them. The fault is especially noticeable with whiter fields.
This suggests that insufficient LEDs may at least constribute to the dissatisfaction of some users. The problem is: a brighter monitor often means a battery that depletes more quickly, and Apple is wedded to the notion that a tablet must have a battery life of ten hours.
The thing is that in an Apple Store and because of the powerful light this difficult to see the screen defects. And usually you will discover them at home.
SebMac32: what is the production week of your iPad Air and Serial number start?
Below my iPad Air vs my iPad Mini (not retina) pics. But always difficult to show a true overview of a screen via a pic because it depends on the current light, the camara and its setting, etc.
My current iPad mini has an even screen (i.e. no issue with yellow tint or anything).

What do you think?
After using it for 3 days now, it looks completely fine to me........especially compared to what I see others have. My pics above look worse in thumbnail view, when you actually click on them and enlarge them, the screen looks fairly even....... My batch is (DMPLD) not sure what production week it is.........And one other thing, after the 3 days the little yellow i saw day one is mostly gone....and not a placebo effect, I took pics and compared.....so who knows....
Ok so I found the site that deciphers the iPad serian number. So mine is:
Production week: 37 (September)
Factory: DM (China - Foxconn)

Well the good news is I finally got a perfect iPhone 5S after playing display roulette for the past two months. Unfortunately, my ipad arrived at my building literally 15 minutes after I left for the airport for thanksgiving vacation. I'm crossing my fingers that it's a good one though so when I get back I can be done being stuck in the replacement loop. From the pictures I'm seeing it looks like they are getting better...
I also don't think the yellow issue has anything to do with the backlighting. The only place where the backlighting is uneven is on the left edge where we typically see the book spine effect. However, I don't think that this may be caused entirely by the backlight LEDs anyway. That would suggest that apple designed the ipad with an asymmetrical backlight LED layout which would make absolutely no sense. As long as the backlighting is symmetrical, it shouldn't have any dark edges or anything. If it did, it would have symmetrical dark edges, and it does not.
It must have something to do with the angle of the LCD or the translucence of the screen itself. It would likely explain both the yellow and the book spine shadow issues.
The most important is to feel happy with his iPad so if you think that your iPad provides a good screen that's fine and this is the most important !
Actually when I'm checking intensively mine I think that there is a small area in the bottom left part of the screen where I can see a slight yellow tint. The best way to see it is when I'm using the keyboard in Safari. I can see the different tints between the left keys and the rights ones. So if I compare the key 'A' with the key 'L' I can see the difference.
Not dramatic but we'll I would except the same quality between as I have on my iPad mini or iPhone 5 at least.
I'll see with the Apple Store a swap with a new one but I'm not sure anymore if I'll get a correct screen. Looks like to be the lottery :(.
"That would suggest that apple designed the ipad with an asymmetrical backlight LED layout which would make absolutely no sense"
Most mobile devices only have LED's down one edge, the diffuser spreads out the backlight, there isnt usualy a need to have lighting from two edges
Following up on my previous post, I did get a replacement from the apple Store. Two geniuses insisted they had never heard of the problem before, and one inisisted mine was his first Air return. The new unit is overall warmish but more even than the previous one. Notably the book spine or bookbinding effect is not evident on this one, although some milder left side unevenness is evident.
In looking at the store demo units it is clear all of those units have the cooloer blue/white color balance, which I much prefer to warmer. Still what does one do? Return an otherwise acceptable screen in hopes of getting a cooler color temp that is also evenly lit?
I am not sure what to make of the signals Apple employees were giving off about it. I was struck by the fact that neither genius scrutinized the display at all to evaluate it for themselves. I showed it to each for perhaps three seconds, and neither even voiced a judgment. I gather since this was an appointment made by an Apple Senior Advisor approving "repair" my case was already flagged for a swap out without further evaluation.
