Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?

I had the book spine issue on the left side of my ipad air, i asked for an exchange twice, and all the ipads i tried had this problem, so i gave up and asked for a refund. Its not fair to pay a premium price and get this level of quality.
When I returned my two iPad Airs I asked how the faults/data information is fed back to the quality/warranty engineers. The response was that only Genious bar appointments fault data in recorded in the system. Walk in return faults are not recorded in the system or noted on the faulty item or box... hense the quality returns data received back in the factory is flawed!
the book spine issue is a shadow effect on the left edge of the screen, to be honest, if you dont look for this problem, probably you wouldn´t notice (at least in my third ipad air, the first two were pretty obvious), but once you realized of the shadow, you´ll always see it, specially when using white backgrounds (safari, flipboard, etc). the width of the shadow was 0.7 cm aprox.
Thank you. With my iPad Air (week 49) I THOUGHT I saw the book spine issue. I should first say that I have returned an Air for pink tone at the top 25% of the display. My current iPad Air display is almost perfect.. I keep thinking that there is a SLIGHT yellow tone on the left side but I am 90% sure it is in my head.
As far as the book spine issue.. I thouht I had that as well but what I noticed is that if I move the iPad vertially and horizontally the issue comes and goes.. so it isn't an issue for me. I can "watch" it appear and move up the sides of the screen as I tit the iPad vertically back and forth
To me this means I don't have the issue. If I have to work this hard to see it....
Also, I thought I would add that I was doing a comparison to an iPad 4 that I have and the display on the 4 looks JACKED compared to my Air. The 4 screen is very pink in tone. Funny thing is I never noticed the issue with the 4's screen until I came here.. read about these issues.. and then ende up comparing it to my Air.
I should also add that compared to my iPad Air, I have an iPad Mini (may return as I am choosing between Air and Mini Retina) the Mini Retina screen is also more warm/slightly pink. This issue stands out most at full brightness in Sepia mode in the Kindle app. On the iPad Air the sepia is a slight tan...on the Mini Retina the sepia tone has much more pink in the tan.
I thought I had the yellow issue.. I MAY have a SLIGHTLY less bright screen on the left side but it is so slight I would never return it for this issue. I thought I had the book spine issue but I can watch it "roll" up and down as I tilt the iPad vertically.
I am in no way saying others don't have an issue.. I have seen the yellow tint. I guess I was just adding some perspective of those that may have some OCD like me but also have a screen that is OK.
Just wanted to post an update to my saga...
Recap of the story so far: ordered first iPad air at release, had yellow tint on left. Replaced at Genius Bar, seemed ok in store, got home, yellow tint. Emailed executive relations and they collected iPad.
Then, a brand new iPad air was sent from China. Received today and the screen is perfect. No yellow tint, no blue tint, nice and bright, evenly lit. No dead pixels.
I'm very happy with the iPad I have now. Just a pity it took 3 tries and over a month.
As others have said, there are perfect screens out there. Just keep trying and do not give up!

Include your apple ID so they can look up your details. The person who replied to me was local to my area.
They also called me several times to ensure I was happy with how things were progressing.
They really did try their best and I'm glad I got the iPad I was wanting when I initally purchased it.

I'm sure if you search the net for it, you'll find it. I just don't want hundreds of people to request it in this thread (especially after Apple has removed it from my post - they must frown upon doing that for a reason).
Good luck.
abacus01, screen uniformity issues are common with LCD screens, particularly edge-lit LED. If you don't see uniformity issues (like most people) it is you who doesn't see them, and that's totally fine. Apple *absolutely* knows about these issues, but they also know that most people are oblivious and would rather have one than wait while Apple sifts through each display and only chooses the best ones.
I'm not looking for a completely uniform screen, it is just that these iPad Airs and Mini Retinas cross the threshold of what a discerning person can tolerate. This is frustrating since we pay a premium for Apple products. Even though most people don't care, Apple should care.
I'm typing this on my latest (number 7) iPad Air, serial DMRLT, and this one is fairly bad.
j182 and others,
How can you swap iPads so many times? Or did you return for refund and repeat this? I'm asking this because the closest Apple Store doesn't accept any more exchanges after a few swaps because they claim they "don't see the problem." They also refused a return for refund.
My ipad air still has the uneven lighting and shadowing. (Right side being brighter than the left). One interesting thing I notice is that if you use your finger swipe on the left side of the screen from top to bottom, you can feel the unevenness of the screen, and you also could feel the screen's bumpiness (you might have to apply a little pressure to feel it, just a little!). I think it's the design flaw that Apple put all the inner components on the left side that could cause "book spine" effect. The chance of getting a perfect screen is small. I might get a refund soon.
Just a quick thought, now that the bezel is narrower could the book spine effect be caused by the super strong magnet used to secure the cover over the screen? I know lcd's are different then old CRT tv and monitors but just a thought
I dont have the bookspine effect so cant test, but i really doubt it
but it would be easy to test - just moves some super strong magnets over the LCD and see if it is affected?
(you coudl probably even use the magnets in the smart cover's hinge, i.e. the "opposite" sides of the ones you think may be causing the problem)
None of the two faults are due to magnets. I never used any cover, yet I have both yellowing and book spine.
The defect is obvious on iPad Air right out of the box, you can see it as soon as you power it the first time and get to the all white backgrounder 'Hello' in all languages.
RedBrown, so far I have just been returning them and reordering on the online store. When I took my first iPad Air back to the Apple Store none of the employees could see the yellow gradient, so I realised it'd be fruitless to continue trying exchanges. Some people have even reported some Apple Store employees who do see the uniformity issues but are unwilling to continue exchanging iPads.
At least we can thank Apple for having a great return policy! Hopefully they'll keep it in place so more discerning customers can continue to try and find an adequate screen.
J182,
First off, I love guys like you who make stupid statements that its me who cant see the uniformity issue. I know exacly what a yellowed screen is. I purchased the last iteration of the kindle fire hd. Staples had it on display and it looked great. I bought it and when opened and compared to the display model it was very yellow looking. The whites on the display were perfect. We had to open four other boxes before we found a good one. Secondly, i ordered the kimdle paperwhite. With the backlighting in it had terrible backlit problems the screen was so uneven it wasnt useable. I recently got the samsung 10.1 2014. Great screen but i have a little backlight bleed on the edge, but im willing to live with that. Now before you go off shooting your mouth about how it must be me that cant see a defective screen, think before you decide to post such an asinine remark. My ipad air is perfect. I know I got lucky and can see from the amount of posts here that there are defective units. Mine is not but I do hope everyone gets theirs sorted out. That said for those that have swapped out 5 or more units. You may want to wait two months or so until apple has this sorted out and all the units have uniform displays. Apple is rushing these out to meet enormous demand so if there is 2 per cent bad to 98 percent good theyll deal with it.
