Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?

Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?

iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

From one perspective it absolutely makes sense to stop trying to find a decent screen after a couple of attempts, but there are reasons to keep trying as well. Firstly, people on this and other forums have found a decent screen after multiple attempts. Secondly, if we're using a multiple-generations-old iPad we may be really wanting an upgrade. Thirdly, at least in my case, I opted for an Apple Store gift card when returning my first iPad Air because I never imagined I wouldn't be able to find a decent screen—a refund is apparently not an option (I've tried), so why not just be patient and keep trying? Fourthly, in learning about LED edge-lit displays I've come to the conclusion that it really is a crap-shoot.

I ended up returning my DMPLV Air. The grey-to-white gradient was totally fine but the book spine issue turned out to be pretty distracting. I decided to swap in-store for an iPad Mini Retina and was very hopefully because the serial number revealed it was a week 48 manufactured at Pegatron (other forums have reported success with these) but unfortunately the yellow gradient on the bottom 1/3rd of the screen was very noticeable.

So, I'll probably try exclusively with the online store now. Nothing to lose! :)

hi,

just want to inform you about my last try to get an accurate ipad air. today with success! i went to the apple store in hamburg (jungfernstieg) and exchanged my air again. in the store i opened two new boxes of airs, first one had a clearly visible book spine effect on the left, the salesperson agreed direcly and brought me another one. i quickly checked the new air, no yellow tint and no book spine effect while i was doing the setup. after completing the setup i did a detailed check of the device and it really had no issues, even at home in the dark no yellow tint or book spine visible! what directly catched my view was the fact that this device already had ios 7.0.4 on it, all other ones were on 7.0.3. my serial is DMRLR. really happy with this one!

The light bleed and uneven lighting is still bothering me, but either way I'm going to be waiting until after Christmas to take it back because parking at the mall takes literally 45 minutes this time of year...

Oh well. I'm just too nervous about getting one worse than the one I already have. It seems like perhaps they're starting to get better though.

I received my 3rd ipad air. All of them has the yellow screen on the left.

All 3 returned.

Have no confidence that Apple can supply a good copy.

I asked for refund

Will try in half year or so again or when Apple fiind out what the issue is and fix it.

Too bad because i really like the ipad air for design, weight and screen-sharpness etc.

My "adventure" with the iPad Air is continuing... After a break of 2 weeks roughly and after having been refund I went last week to the Apple store to try again buying a new Air.

So I've opened 2 iPad Air 32Gb with a yellow screen out of the box and then tried a 64gb in order to see if the screen of the 64Gb would be better but it was with two colors (Green/grey on the top of the screen and pinkish on the bottom). Finally I've kept the last try which was a 32gb Silver. This was honestly the best one with a "descent" screen quite even.

Once at home I've noticed that a slight book spin was on the left side of the screen. This was not really dark but slightly, very slightly gray/blue. I tried to keep as it was during one week but decided to go back to the Apple Store today to swap because I can't accept to have a screen defect with a premium product.

So basically the new iPad offered was worst (especially the last one with both book spine and top left of the screen yellow). The Manager emphasis that all iPad Air are yellow out of the box and then will come whiter when using them a couple of days or weeks... I think this is not fully wrong if the screen is a bit yellow out of the box and even because I saw my previous ipad air doing that after one week. But I don't believe that the Book spin or the uneven colors or the difference of brightness will be fixed when using the iPad a couple of days.

Finally I've been refund again. I'm starting to have huge doubts that there is good iPad Air screens. I believe the new technology used with the iPad Air screen is the source of the brightness issue (i.e. right side is very bright and left is less bright) and I would agreed keeping my iPad with this issue but I don't accept to have the uneven colors and the book spine on the top of that.

What to do really? Try again and again...?

We understand how you feel. Apple has always been perceived as a top quality company, and normally that has been my experience. When I used to buy thousands of their desktop units, it was rare when we ended up with a problem, and Apple was quick on correcting the situation.

Returning and exchanging a product because of manufacturing issues is not my cup of tea. After the second time it becomes a hassle and embarrasing to have to explain the situation over and over. I may not be looking for a problem on the screen, but for many years I worked as a professional photographer, so color variations, screen brilliance issues and book spines, call my attention, and my eyesight isn't that good any more. In my opinion the yellow tint, its related to the amount of light bleed.

In preparation for returning the iPad Air, I picked up a Galaxy Note, there is a very tiny amount of yellow tint on the botton right corner and a few spots with visible light bleeds against a dark screen, but honestly, not as bad as what I have seen on the Air. I'm not sure if what I see on the Galaxy is enough for me to take it back. I stopped by Barnes and Nobles to inspect the Nook HD+ 32 GB, that screen was nice, unfortunately since its on sale the stock at the stores have been depleted. Going to try tomorrow to see if I find one, for $149, for a tablet with such a nice screen, I'm jumping in.

If I return my iPad Air, instead of exchanging it, I will hold on buying another one. I've actually put all my Apple purchases on hold, because of all the problems being reported, No 5S, No iPad rMini, and maybe no iPad Air.

Been happy with my 4s, Original iPad (although I was dissapointed Aplple stopped supporting it), iPad 4, and iPad Mini.

Happy Holidays to All!

I too am done with Apple. The last straw was getting my 3rd ipad mini retina shipped from PA with yellow screen and scratches on the back - an obvious ploy to pawn off a return. Apparently their strategy is to recycle the unwanted units until they find a home, rather than step up and deliver a quality product. I for one dont have time to play this game. If you want my money in the future, Apple, you're going to have to try harder.

Dec 24, 2013 2:17 PM in response to Air User

When I was in getting my iPhone swapped out, I checked out the display units of iPad mini retinas and airs, and they were all so bad. They were disgustingly defective. And to think I considered for a second swapping my current air for the slight light bleed and brightness uneveness that I don't even notice in normal use...

The minis all had washed out/yellow bottom halves, and the airs had terribly yellow left halves. You don't even have to go looking for it, it's plainly obvious. At least mine you really have to squint to see it...

I posted that picture of my iphone 5S awhile back, with what looked like a crack under the display, I finally took it in and it turns out it was the screen delaminating. So they swapped it. The device they gave me had a dented back case... Took it back, and now I'm back to the yellow band on the top of the screen/yellow upper right corner. But this has to be my 12th or 13th replacement by now, I can't handle it. I'm done, just going to ignore it and live with it. Every device I get has some sort of issue and it's starting to get embarassing going back to the apple store, because I know I'm being nitpicky. *******

Really difficult to answer to this question because a picture doesn't reflect the really of what you can see when you are checking your screen.

Did you notice any defect such book spine, yellow tint in specific area(s), different color variation between top / bottom or left/right sides? If so, if you can see a defect then yes I would go to the store and ask for swapping or to be refund.

The think is that there is absolutely no assurance that you will get one better... And this is the point! I've swapped or be refund so many times (more than 12 times for sure) and I'm still looking for a good screen. My last try provided me a screen with two different tints between top and bottom sides (DMPLV serial, production week 50). This is the first times this happen, I've never do that previously with any Apple products.
