Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

Picked up two Air's with serial DMRLW. Production week 51 (December). Both have perfectly uniform and bright screens but each has a dead pixel. Argh! I can't notice the dead pixel unless I stare at it with a white screen 4" away. I'll see how I feel in a few days if it starts to be noticeable.
Also with the dead pixels, you may want to check for hot pixels. These are brightly lit pixels you'll see on black backgrounds. Most of the ones I saw were green. They can be kind of annoying when you watch movies with dark scenes. It's like seeing a pimple on your face. Once you see it, it draws your attention to it.
Bought an iPad Air yesterday afternoon (Italy). Serial was DMPLX.
No yellow tint (however a slight pinkish tint overall if the store light didn't trick me) but book spine on the left side, even though not as pronounced as before.
I asked for a replacement but the genius refused explaining that they're all like this: it's due to how the Air is engineered. Such eneven brightness is annoying for me, in particular when browsing in landscape hence, despite the repeated questions from the genius about my final decision ("are you sure?") I then asked for a full refund.
Given how the screen quality has evolved from day 1, I think it now reached a mature state and I'm no more confident to get a decent (for me) screen for this model. I hope the next Air will fix this issue since the screen is basically everything, in a tablet.
My 2 cents. Cheers.
From what I've learned, I'm guessing the current iPad design needs a better quality or better manufactured/applied lightguide (the lightguide is the part which attempts to evenly distribute the LED light across the screen). Who knows when/if that will happen ... most people don't notice the non-uniformity so I doubt it's a top-priority issue for manufacturers. I'm personally not expecting to find an iPad Air which has a screen as uniform as my iPad 3. I'd just be happy to get an Air that isn't distractingly non-uniform.
On a side note, I received a 2013 Nexus 7 recently (for testing) and it too has uniformity issues and the bookspine effect. However, it's not as bad as most of the Airs/Mini Retinas I've seen, and since Android 4.4.2 is less white than iOS 7 it's basically a non-issue on the Nexus. Nifty little tablet by the way. Not as nice as an iPad, but decent.
about 3 days ago. Seems no issue at all, i cannot notice the yellow tint. I however notice a very small line of bookspine if opening a white backgrounded display like blank screen or notes, but it is not bugging me at all. I understand though that the 8 in DMPL8 was manufacturing code date is that correct?
Yes, it sounds reasonable. I guess it's something related to the single led bar, too but I think that the manufacturing and assembling precision required for the optical film that evenly distributes the light is out of the scope for such a mass production device, being it premium or not. Maybe I'm wrong but I bet that the only way to improve this is to wait for the next hardware revision, hopefully adopting a different technology for the display.
In the meanwhile people like me who are annoyed by the uneven brightness but still want an ipad, could pick up one and check if it's good enough for them. If not, my advice is that it's wiser to return it for a full refund and avoiding to replace units over and over again because chances to get a perfectly backlit display are very low.
I bought the ipad Air 128 GB Wifi+Cellular in December. Until now, I got three exchanges. The first one had a loose display and the last two had this annoying yellow tint on the left side. For me it's a big issue cause when I am reading, my eyes always notice this yellow to blue/purple color changing when reading from left to right.
I mean, a lot of people are exchanging the ipads because of this. Why is Apple soooooooo slow or even not responding when these kind of problems pop up??? 869 Euros...for me it's not worth the money. if the next and for me last exchange has the same problem (as intense as the last two), I'll return it for good. 😟
I think you're right about mass production being an issue and the single LED row. However, I don't think Apple will switch display technology anytime soon. They do seem to be making some changes - the yellow hue has turned more grey in the later units I've seen. Maybe they'll get the colourshift within better limits eventually?
I write this on a DMRLW (week 51) iPad Air with a noticeable greyish-yellow colourshift on the left 1/3-1/2 of the display. A very slight bookspine. Still waiting to see a DMPLX or later...
It's such a shame. The Air is such a fantastic tablet otherwise!
I've purchased 4 iPad Air's from John Lewis and all of them had either a yellow screen & yellow tint on the left.
After doing a ggogle search i think i've found the answer! No Samsung screens we're used in the Ipad Mini or the Air's. Have a look here:

I've picked up a week 50 from the online Apple Store -a DMQLV - and it has a pretty even white screen and the slight book spine effect. It's the best I've seen with most of the local Apple Store devices having the left to right yellow colour shift in a big way.
I've also returned one to John Lewis for the same reason as the poster above. I've found that if there is a slight book spine effect the screen is pretty even and white. If there is no book spine effect it's yellow on the left. So I think this one is pretty good - and about as good as it gets at the moment for this generation of iPad.
alanyl, i got information from other forums that DMPL8 was in fact August production, i also understood that there is a high chance that what i have was a refurbished one if i did not experience issues, this im assuming. However, i am super satisfied with my Ipad Air now and the slight bookspine is not at all noticeable.....I bought this from Kobe Japan btw.
The fourth one I got still had this yellow tint. Not as much as the last ones but still very good to notice. An additional problem with the fourth was, that tipping (not very hard) on the display when writing or gaming made an annoying klicking sound. So I will return this one today and wait a few month. Maybe then the problem will be solved.
Butt Apple really needs to improve the quality of the products.
They look so great, the software is really cool, the innovations are great....so please increase the quality.
Sent mine in on monday, it was a DMPLG with noticable yellow tint on the left side. Just got the info that a replacement with serial DMPLX is on the way. Hopefully this one will be better! I will post the results here when I have it.
Today I had to give up my iPad. As my 2nd replacement had the tint issue and 4 dead pixels I took it to the store and after opening 2 brand new units, both had the book spine problem and the Genius offered me a refund.
As I already have tested 5 iPads and all were problematic in display I decided to accept the refund and now I should live some months without a tablet. As I literally hate Android tablets and I love iPad except for the screen issues, I have to wait some months to see if Apple will rectify the issue.
All things aside, the customer orientation and helpfulness I received was beyond my imagination. I will be a life time Apple user if I happen to get a non-problematic iPad Air
At my appointment on Saturday they had to order me a replacement since they didn't have any 128gb space gray wifi in stock (probably their most unpopular model, but I always fill my iDevices to the brim ^^). I showed up today to check out the replacement and was bummed to see it have the same starting serial as my current iPad, DMPLQ. I booted it up and did my best to examine the screen. The lights in the Apple Store are really tough to test under. Fortunatley I had prepared a page on my website with test images (http://www.bitcake.com/pixeltest in case anyone else wants to use for testing). After booting I went straight to Safari to download them. It took me a while to finally see that the replacement also has yellow tint. The Apple clerk kindly offered to order another replacement, but I told her I would just hold onto my original one and try again later when a newer batch of replacements are available.
Like I've said before, the yellow tint on my DMPLQ iPad Air is nothing compared to the screen problems of the iPad 3's I went through and eventually gave up on. Those were really bad, while this is annoying but tolerable. I will try to exchange again in 2 months.
