Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

My DMPLX just arrived. The screen is much better. It has very small stripes of yellow, but on both sides. Something I have with my iPhone 5 too. I guess I wouldn't have noticed it without the trouble I had with the previous one.
Happy so far...
I received a replacement for my last DMRLW (week 51) and it's another DMRLW. After unboxing it I was surprised to see that it is actually the best Air I've had by far — I've been through about 10 Airs since Nov 1. The colour and brightness is uniform enough to be decent. It does have a bookspine effect which is noticeable with white webpages, Pages documents, PDFs, etc.
The bookspine annoys me but I'm feeling good enough about the uniformity that I think I'll keep this one. Perhaps if I start reading reports of spectacular Air screens maybe I'll attempt another replacement :) I'm thankful to finally have an Air I intend on keeping and I hope all of you who are among the more discerning Apple customers will get the Air screen you're hoping for.
Today I went to the Apple Store seeking an iPad Air, DMPLX serial model. The salesman was very sympathetic when I explained why I was looking for that particular serial number. He brought out a DMPLT model and opened it for me (I did not even want to open it because it wasn't a DMPLX). He even took me to a halllway behind the "employees only" door to view the iPad in dimmer light. He immediately noticed the book spine shadow and advised me not to buy it.
I left the Apple Store empty-handed. The salesman said that there were no DMPLX units available. By judging from the display units, the book spine shadow was on the Airs I looked at while waiting. I'm very doubtful that the bookspine shadow, yellow tint, and back light bleed problem will be solved in this version of the iPad Air.
I have a DMPLX and while it's good it still has some unevenness. It's not as good as my iPad 4 was. So I'd tend to agree with you. I think these issues are design limitations. Probably to do with assembly.
I've a variety of problems - the best screen was a week 50 DMQLV was a luck would have it, it suffered from a dead pixel in an obvious place. The one I'm keeping is a week 52 DMPLX - it has slight book spine but a fairly even screen. The DMQLV had a more even screen but a darker spine. No much bleed in either.
I've found no spine equals very uneven screen - yellow left and the more noticeable the spine, the more even the screen. The very first ones that were available in early November from week 33 and 39 were generally better for screen whiteness and evenness but these devices suffered from case damage and in one case the screen was loose.
Apple's manufacturing process seems too variable in terms of quality and is probably at the very edge of doability for the cost they are prepared to accept.
Most of the Airs in the Apple Store's I've been in have had very uneven screens - with staff telling me that this is on purpose to make it look like a book - right - even when you turn the device upside down and the spine and unevenness shifts to the RHS. Hmmmm.
On purpose to make it look like a book ... I don't think I could have kept in a smile even if I was annoyed :) The DMRLW that I'm keeping sounds similar to your DMQLV (but without the dead pixel) though you may have higher uniformity standards than me. Mine isn't quite as uniform as my iPad 3, but if there were no bookspine I would feel extremely happy with the display.
CasualObserver, as frustrating as this is, keep in mind that as long as most people aren't complaining Apple won't feel a lot of pressure to immediately rectify the issues. We should be very thankful they have a great and easy return policy.
j182, you are right. As long as no one complains, Apple will do nothing. By the way, the Apple salesman was so great that he opened the box to test the iPad Air BEFORE I purchased it – that NEVER happens.
I'm on my fourth ipad air now. All had very yellow/ green tints to the whole screen. The first 3 from John Lewis I've returned. So I thought the best thing was to go to the Apple store. They compared my last john lewis iPad to the ones on display which were blue white in colour mine looked awful set next to it. They said they could help and I got a new one from them there and then. They showed me the screen but in another part of the store, very bright lights away from the natural light the others were compared in. The man serving me said he could see a real difference in one they were selling me. All seemed well, but once I got outside I went to a coffee shop opened it up and in real light it was just as yellow/green as the rest. So back I went only 20 min. later they called someone who would know they compared it to the one on display and told me that NO WAY WOULD THEY REPLACE IT FOR THE SCREEN COLOUR AS FAR AS THEY WERE CONCERNED THAT WAS HOW IT SHOULD LOOK.
Now funny how they could see how different it was before I handed over my money, but once they had my cash the same colour was just as it should be.
I've been through lots as well and when I complained in store I was told that this was an intentional design. Right. Basically decent Air screens are few and far between. Most of the ones I've seen have had some kind of colour tinge. I tried John Lewis, and a couple of Apple Stores, resellers as well. All poor.
The best screens I've seen came from the Apple Online Store. First was a week 50 that was good but had a dead pixel. The one I've decided to keep was also from the Online Store, a week 52 that is not bad, compared to the vile screens I've seen almost everywhere else.
I originally posted about my terrible experience with the iPad Air way back when this thread was a few hundred replies. Since then I've purchased 3 Retina Minis trying to land a decent screen. Every single one of the units has been defective - uneven yellowing, atrocious back light bleed, dead pixels, poor brightness or a completely yellow screen (not a "warm" screen). All of them have been purchased through the online Apple store except the 3rd which was purchased through a premium reseller (iStudio) in Bangkok, Thailand.
At iStudio, all the floor models, both the Airs and the rMinis, have perfect, crisp white screens with no back light bleed. They're exactly what we're all looking for. Naturally, after purchasing my new rMini (week 51), I walked over to compare what I'd purchased with what they had on display. It was clear to both myself and the sales assistant that the screens were totally different - mine was yellowish at the top and very yellow near the bottom. He explained to me, however, that they could only issue a refund and couldn't open another box because ALL the units had this characteristic. He said ever since the original batch the screens had been turning out this way and that they'd had many customer complaints - so many in fact that they'd quit opening new units for complaints about the screen. This goes to show that this problem is not isolated, and that Apple has undoubtedly grown lackadaisical about quality control in order to meet demand.
Reluctantly I just took the iPad because I'd already sold my old one and was tired of the constant exchanges and refunds. Since then I've found that Safari constantly refreshes tabs, iOS 7 is always crashing, and that the yellow uneven screen will forever be the first thing I notice when I look at the screen. Apple needs to get knocked down a peg, so they can get back to delivering a premium product. To those of you out there looking to buy, don't. Maybe Apple will get it figured out next year.
I'm in the same boat - I've heavily invested in the Apple Eco system to the extent that I have nothing else. I've ended up with an iPad with a poorer screen than my now sold iPad 4 but after multiple returns and having given up on the rMini completely, I'm sticking with my variable tone screen. It's the best out of all the devices I've seen apart from the launch ones in store.
I've bought an Android phone and I'll be looking at the new Samsung Tabs when they appear. And when my wife's MacBook dies, which can't be far away, I'll be buying her a Chromebook at £200 and not a £1000 MacBook with a dodgy screen. I don't mind £200 and a dodgy screen. £1000 is not on.
So the move from Apple that I never thought would happen is starting. And yes, complacency is the issue Apple. And if you take any notice of these threads, learn from BlackBerry.
We're all on the same boat. But at the end of the day, we've all been fooled. Beside the good 'after sale' and customers service, what drives me mad is the absolute muteness of Apple heads on the issue. Someone, somewhere, at Apple, is NOT doing the job. And that someone or perhaps a few people, are leading the brand to a disaster.
These people must be identified and taken away.
Until now, we've all been isolated individuals . We've all dealt locally, in stores, resellers, AppleCare or God knows where, with that dreaded issue. And, every time in life, when you're alone, you're weak and soon dead.
I don't know how many of us here have a lawyer - I do.
I suggest setting up a blog or something and start advertising on the issue, and prepare for a collective legal action.
That's the only way. Otherwise, we can keep on posting in that thread or at MacRumors thread which is also very long now, we can keep on chiming , whining etc, we'll always be isolated individuals and it's going to be all good for the people at Apple who are screwing the business .
I bought the Air on November 2nd, and when the threads on the screens defects started on both forums, I'd had never thought by then it would last.
Now is time for action . Legal action for the Apple ' s brand sake. Because if we let it go, then all future releases might well be screwed just as the latest products had been bad products. Which I don't want to happen.
Thoughts ?
Is global class action even possible? Don't think so. Not sure what the right path is here, but I know it'll catch up to them sooner or later. People will only pay a premium for a substandard product once. This saddens me more than anything. I felt that Apple was the one tech company I could trust to deliver but not anymore.
All we can do is vote with our feet. Apple is so arrogant now that they'll only do something when they start losing money and this won't happen as long as most people are happy with (or don't notice) yellow screens. And other manufacturers, Amazon, have the same issue with the Kindle HDX. In fact it's actually worse than the iPad Air.
Samsung in my experience generally have the best screens. But the downside is that their devices are horribly plastic.
So it's wherever you can put up with. I for one have given up on the rMini and bought a Nexus 7 for my portable tablet. And saved £180 in the process.
