Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

I think the pressure for smaller, lighter devices has pushed companies to use cutting edge technology that is hit and miss. I purchased 3 ipad Airs with yellow/greenish tinted screens that may have passed for normal had I not had an iPad 4 with a perfect warm, white screen to compare them to. My 4th Air has a very good screen which is bright and mostly even and white. If I look at the split keyboard in portrait mode it isn't quite as bright on the left but not noticeable in everyday use. My rMini is also not quite as bright at the bottom if I really look for it, but not yellow. I am more than satisfied with these 2 devices and feel I was lucky considering all the problems others have had. I have also noticed all the Airs and rMinis in the Apple store have good screens, but this is viewing them at 100% brightness in a brightly lit store. While the staff in the Apple store have never agreed that my screens were flawed, they have been very accomodating with returns (all done within 14 days) and I will continue to buy Apple products and hope for the best. I hope everyone here can find a device(s) with a good screen as when they are good they really are the best.
I've got an exchange today for my ipad retina mini. The screen has more brightness than the one I have before but there is still a yellow tint on the left side. As many said when you compared it with the ones that they have in the store for demo there is a HUGE difference on the quality of the screen. I'm still wondering if I can have one without any issues.
It is absolutely frustrating for sure, but we need to be realistic. Screen uniformity issues are common in the industry. Whether or not Apple's are worse than others, all we can do is let Apple know. Maybe their generous return policy is partially their way of dealing with common industry problems? The more of us who let them know the more likely these things will be a priority.
Keep posting your experiences! Also add in the first 5 digits of serial numbers just in case a trend forms.
In my experience, iPads on display in Apple Stores are just as bad. I've seen maybe 3 decent Airs in-store out of 30, and I've seen 0 decent Mini Retinas in-store out of maybe 20. The store lighting and the iPads up to 100% brightness really hides the non-uniformity.
I wish I could exchange. It seems that as I was told that this is the normal screen colour and they don't exchange for this reason, someone in a position of power has decided the best way to deal with this is to call the defective screen colour the new standard colour.
I'm going to have a little inline chat about this. I'm hoping that now I'm not dealing through another company anymore but directly with apple I might get some joy. It's not something I can ignore, I'm looking at it now and every time I open my iPad. Sad to think now when I use it my first reaction will alway be a deep sigh, a shake of the head and a very bad impression of Apple.
Got my 2nd exchange after having a yellow hue on the left. My 2nd attempt succeeded and I am happy with what I got this time. Uniformity is nearly perfect and there is only a slight backlight bleeding on the bottom. The screen is white and not yellow.
Good luck with your exchanges!
I've been yesterday at Carrousel du Louvre store in Paris and the ipads mini displayed look flawless, the white on the screen is white and uniform or light gray if you're picky. Mine now (DLXLM) is just as the one from Jets3am. I'll be more indulgent if the displayed ipads got the same yellowish tint. It seems more fair, at least what you see is what you buy. Besides, the customer service was helpful and patient.
Hi Flexigem - what was your serial no. prefix? Was it DMPLX?
I went back to the Apple Store at Stratford City, London today hoping to get a replacement for the 128gb cellular ipad Air which I had to return before Christmas due to yellowed whites, a pink patch in one corner and book spine.
A few more of the display models seemed to be OK this time with only half those I examined having obvious bookspine. As usual it was difficult to judge uneven colour even with the excellent pixel test pages from bitcake (http://www.bitcake.com/pixeltest/).
I got the usual level of helpfulness from the apple staffer despite the fact that he probably thought me a lunatic. They only had DMPLL and DMPLK and could not say how old they were. He pointed out that they don't sell many 128gb cellular so these could be 'older' production. He was not allowed to unbox and let me take a look before buying so I decided to pass.
Maybe I will try another store to see if I can get a DMPLX or risk ordering online in the hope of getting a recently made iPad.
Thanks to you all for your information. Please keep posting details of batches which seem to be better and anything else which can help.
I am on my third exchange. There's a yellow tint that starts from the left and goes to the middle of the screen. My second iPad Air had a great screen but the home button was faulty. I sent it in for service was hoping they would replace the home button but instead got a replacement. So now I am back to a yellow screen (screen uniformity issue.) I have the 64 GB Verizon.
The last two have DMPLM and the first one was DMPLN. My second iPad with a pretty good screen was DMPLM but the third replacement with that same serial number seems a little warmer on the left to middle of the screen and the botttom left.
My exchanges have been done through the mail. The Apple store doesn't carry much of the higher GB Verizon. I have had this device for a little over a month but have gotten about a weeks worth of use due to the exchanges. I had an iPad 2 and iPad 4, none of them had a problem. I regrettably ugraded. So if you are looking to upgrade, don't. I would wait until next year when they work out the kinks.
A senior service representative is now helping with the problem. I am hoping it works out. If I wasn't attached to my iPhone (it works seemlessly with the iPad) I would consider it may be time to look else where. I am not a fan of Samsung so that is out of the question.
I feel bad about the exchanges and frustrated at the same time.
The question is how long to wait for Apple to sort out the problem before putting yourself through all that stress again.
I had thought that waiting until after the Christmas and New Year selling frenzy would have been enough. At this rate, I might get a decent one just before they launch the next model; if I can afford all the time and frustration required.
It's frustrating that you never get to speak to anyone senior, who will acknowledge the problems and they can never bend the system to allow you to do the quality check they should have done themselves before handing over the money.
I really don't think the perfect iPad exists - the Air has some kind of design issue that makes manufacturing the device to have an even white screen is barely possible. I have settled on one with the book spine issue and that has a fairly even screen - that's after trying 6 or 7 devices.
That said, the Kindle HDX both devices have real yellow screen issues and even Samsung devices can suffer,
but not anythling like the proportion of AIrs. I've given up on the rMini completely because of the yellow screen issue and bought a Nexus 7 2013 for my small tab - the screen on it is white and even.
So my advice is to accept the compromise of the screen quality on this iPad generation or skip it. If the new Nexus 10 was available, I'd probably have gone all Android for my tabs this year.
I have a 2013 Nexus 7 and it has a yellow hue on the bottom 1/3 with a very slight bookspine - it is not as obvious because Android isn't nearly as white as iOS. It's not as bad as most of the Airs and Mini Retinas I've seen, but the iPad Air I've decided to keep is more uniform in colour although the bookspine is much more noticeable.
Just last night I noticed for the first time that my TV (which I've had for 4 years) has a subtle light bleed around the edges...
The point is that we need to try hard to be realistic. We shouldn't compromise what we're looking for, but be aware that we've probably become more sensitive to these issues due to the frustration.
I want to share with you what I have seen in the last 10 weeks trying to get an iPad Air without yellow tint.
Here are my experiences:
- All my devices started with DMPL.
- I have seen more than 30 iPad Airs. With around 10 iPad Airs I went home. All refunded within the two weeks.
- I had both colours. Black and white.
- The white one suffered even more from the yellow tint than the black iPad Air.
- I had several DMPLM, DMPLN, DMPLT, DMPLV. All had the yellow tint on the left side of the screen. All!
- Now I got several DMPLX. The black DMPLX iPad Airs didn't have the problem with the yellow tint. But: ALL, yes all, DMPLX black units had dust under the screen surface. Dust! Small and/or big.. Not just one or two. Several! Quite shocking because the screen was ok. No yellow tint.
- my last two devices again DMPLX. But I took the white iPad Air. No dust. All devices no dust. And all devices had a better screen than the previous white iPad Airs. Some still had the yellow tint.
Finally I got a white DMPLX. No dust. No yellow tint on the left side. Now that iPad has a yellow tint just everywhere. So after all, it looks harmonic. ;-)) it is so ridiculous.
Conclusion:
- Go for DMPLX devices.
Apple: thanks for refunding all my Airs without any stress. The Apple stuff isn't quite interested in checking what's wrong with your device. They just refund and refund.... .... but sure, most of them never have heard about the yellow tint problem. ;-))) Great service. Where, please where can you exchange so many devices?
But, Apple: you seriously have a problem. We all here love your iPad Air. But what the **** is going on with your screens? What's the problem? Do you ignore all these problems? Dust under the screen? That is unacceptable.

By the way: right now, I checked my 11 months old 2013 iMac 27. That screen here is suffering from backlit bleeding in a way that I want to throw that screen out or the window. I never saw it because the screen was never used with black backgrounds only. At least, the iMac has no yellow tint. So I'm happy.
Same problem here. Swapped 4 times, all same problem although some were worse than others, plus the dark edge on left side which once you notice it on some white background, like in pdf books, your eyes can't avoid it.
I'll return the last one for good and get a refund.
I give up!
Hello all,
4th iPad air. Same issue. Not as bad as last 3, people at apple think I'm nuts, bit once u see it, u can't unsee it. I suspects it's the fact these are rushed out, has anyone brought one recently like last two weeks and got a good unit? I'm debating weather to get another exchange or keep this one as it's kind of ok. It's an amazing device, just wish they would have samsung screens back and not this current crop of *****!
