Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

Just to add something here - the serial number letter prefixes don't mean anything. The iPad that ifixit took apart has the serial beginning with DLXL and is an LG screen.
Agree. It could have been the greatest tablet ever...now it got this tint/book spine issue. Really disappointed, I'll return mine tomorrow. I just can't stand the idea that one product that costs my seven hundred dollars has some flaw like that. I'll try one more time to see if I will got lucky, if it still got this issue, I'll give up with air and wait for mini2.
Not at all. Just that there's some debate about the relationship of the first 4 letters to screen manufacturers with suggestions that they relate to Samsung, LG and possibly others. Certainly Samsung have made screens in the past for Apple and LG definitely are making them for the Air as shown in the iFixit teardown. The DLXL code was questioned in the Reddit thread as being a third unknown maker but since the iFixit Air has that code and is LG then it means the codes don't necessarily indicate the screen manufacturer. More likely they relate to batch numbers.
I believe that the first two of those characters tell which factory in which the iPad was put together.
During the iPad 3 screen issues, we tried to come up with a way to tell screen manufacturer from the serial number. It ended up in a lot of speculation, but in the end, there wasn't any way to tell. I think that factories just get shipments of parts and put them together. We never came up with a solid correlation between any location and defective screens. I'm guessing that a people will spin their wheels here, and have the same result.
No, somebody said this
"What is your screen manufacturer code (found in serial number)
DMQL - Samsung
DMPLG - LG
DLXL - no clue, Sharp?
He did not know DLXL, now we now that DLXL is LG too, so LG is DMPL and DLXL and Samsung is DMQL and according to the problems with yellow tint, 95% are talking about LG codes - so i believe SAMSUNG is vastly superior
OK...I see what you mean...I'll go check this afternoon to see if there is any airs with the code DMQL...but I think they probably will have the same code in the same store...bestbuy i mean, that's where I bought mine
I believe, we should know what we are buying, for me Samsung is much better choice (i prefer Samsung TV to LG any day)...
I would welcome Apple to say how we recognize LG and Samsung by the codes...
There DEFINITELY is some order in it, they are not just random numbers and letters
the mini2....
this rumor could be what we are suffering in our ipads?
is a bad user experience buy an ipad 7 days ago and...
today, after a few headaches, more money and time spent, we follow here with the same issue and Apple has not said anything about it
(excuse my english)
Agreed, mine is DLXL and has no colour issues but as I've stated before may or may not have a bookspine issue. All that is known for sure is that LG definitely make them. Having read several articles in Apple Insider it's highly likely that LG is in fact making all the screens for the Air.
Incidentally I took mine to my local Apple store today to buy Applecare and spoke to a manager about this issue. He did confirm that they'd exchanged quite a lot of iPads and did acknowledge that there was a very very slight shadow on the left of mine but he suggested to just live with it for the moment as I can exchange it anytime within the warranty/applecare period if I'm still not happy.
So for those of you with the minimal bookspine problem why not wait a while for the production runs to slow down and QC to perhaps step up now that the initial "I wanna be first" rush is over and exchange in a few months.
For those with more pronounced colour variations then that's a different matter, but still if you can wait then there might be more chance of getting a decent replacement first time.
On another note for those that do take out Applecare be aware that you only get ONE extra years cover rather than two for other products, but you are covered for two accidental "drops".
Waiting a month or 2 for replacement is a good idea (is my only option, my reseller will not return my money).
but pay for a new ipad today in order to have a replacement in a few months later is a bad idea, it is better not to buy a defective ipad today (€ 569) and buy a replacement in perfect condition one or two month later (400 €)
(Sorry for my English)
I think I'll return mine next week, check maybe one or two to see if theres a difference, if theres not I'll get a refund and wait a few months for this to sort itself out. I've had a Ipad 1, 4 & Mini, Iphone 4 & 5 and no problems but I never bought any day of release. I think maybe we are suffering from being early adopters.
The fact the Mini may be delayed because of burn in shows there are issues.
You have to remember that not all iPads are suffering any problems at all so if you want the lighter weight and 64bit/ARM7 technology (because that's the main selling point) then the screen issue might be a gamble worth taking. However if you're not too desperate to be first in line then wait a while!
Just as a reminder of things past my first Mac was the good old G3 iBook Dual USB - something like 70% of those were faulty with screen problems related to badly made Logic boards and were the subject of a class action lawsuit that Apple lost.
It seems a lot of "pro" users love giving the suggestion that a reboot or hard reset of your machine is going to cure yellow tint. It won't. It has nothing to do with any software-related issues of colour management, resolution, etc.
Apple has consistently been cited by consumers for years over yellow tinted screens. As a past owner of several Retina MBPs, iMacs, iPhones of various generations and now the new iPad, there's varying degrees of this tinting in their whole line-up. Why this QC issue continues to haunt Apple, I have no idea.
The most creative explanations I've read so far talk about an adhesive too generiously applied. Another referenced the fact that white leds are not used, instead they use a blue bulb with a yellow phosphor treatment to generate white light... and that their may be too much phosphor.
I'm personally sticking with my iPhone 5, after comparing its whites more favourably to the iPhone 5S.
There's lots of apples on the the tree, folks. I suggest you return for a refund and hold out for a fresh batch next month.

Hello, i have the same problem, left part of the screen is yellow (and darker). I am from Prague, Czech republic and my serial number starts DMPLJ...my ipad is the most expensive one, 128giga cellular. So much money and so much dissapoitment! Where is the quality control??
Panels from LG are totally inferior to Samsung it seems, why don't you label iPad's with the sticker - screen from LG or Samsung? It's a lottery! Different quality for the same amount of money!
I checked light leakage around sides and that's ok but still one side is noticably yellower and darker, seems like LED's are different there or the whole LG panel is some crappy technology, i am annoyed totally, i don't want to go again to the shop where i bought it because i fear that they will not give me Samsung panel and i can be dissapointed again with the same problem :(((
Good post.... Very seriously excellent!
So now we have the two crap manufacturers, Chinese and Korean. Don't buy LG products. They are made like dirt. LG TV's and computer monitors are crap too.. LG stands for "Low Grade". That's what it really means I promise.
You know... I said this years ago when the iPad 2's were out. If I was the Apple owner / CEO I would relocate the factories for iPad assembly. Move them over to Japan. Build very special expensive premium quality factories and use premium parts. The cost of development and production will be unbelievably high. I might even go bankrupt.... Heck yeah I would still do it. It's really about "perfection" in build quality and functionality anyway as an Apple standard. I would then mark the iPad Air 16GB $2000 each. The higher memory capapcity with cellular will be more expensive, $3000. iPad Mini (Retina) 16GB I will mark $1700 for it. I mean seriously..... I would pay that amount for quality. I don't like the fact that everyone can buy Apple products because they got so cheap.. Only the riches can buy. That's why it's called "Apple", sorta like buying a Mercedes / BMW / Lamborghini / Ferrari / Zonda / Porsche etc etc etc etc.....
It's not worth $500 to own a cheaply built iPad and up with the screen issues.....
Send this concern to Apple president. He needs to think about this seriously.
goodolcheez
I have an iPad mini, an iPad 3rd gen and an iPad 4th gen. All three have beautiful screens with no blotchiness nor color cast variations or backlight bleeding. I know I would be seriously PO'd if I bought an Air that had screen issues. We purchase Apple products and pay a premium for a good reason...for quality. Consumers paying a premium for a premium product shouldn't have to let this kind of thing hamper their descision to make a purchase...but sadly, that's what's happening here.
