Window display issues in Mavericks after wake from sleep

I recently upgraded a late 2012 Mac Mini 2.3 i7 to Mavericks. I have no complains about the speed of the OS so far, but I am experiencing a strange display issue upon wake from sleep. If I keep any applications running, and the system goes into sleep mode or power sleep, all of the app windows and desktop folders get compressed to the top left hand corner of the screen. The top menu bars are hidden off screen, they windows can not be resized, and the windows are spring loaded back to the top corner if you drag them away from this location.

The issue can be remedied by switching between the display settings to refresh the screen, or of course rebooting the system.

Has anyone else experienced this issue on other systems? Is this a current known bug that the Apple folks will address in an update?

FYI, I also have a 2012 Macbook Air 1.8 i5 that I have experienced this same issue.

Thanks

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

2012 MacBook Air.

Mission Control invoked -- use multiple spaces frequently.

Use 22 inch external monitor DVI -- connected to DVI to thunderbolt (mini display port) adapter.

Freezes whenever waking up when the above two factors are in place.

Like the others have mentioned.... clearing cache and Safe mode work for a while. It keeps happening though.

I have had 4 calls to Apple Support. They are now moving me up to Tier 2 support and engineering Dept.

same problem on iMac 27 with an external Thunderbolt drive used for large files fast access and Time Machine-

Thunderbolt HDD no longer powers up after resuming;

tons of users reporting Thunderbolt displays bug as well!

last update completely messed Thunderbolt port wake up-

Apple to fix in a future patch... just wait (this is unacceptable from Apple ... IMHO)

I am opening a bug report every single day and encourage you all to do the same;

this is the only way Apple starts working on this UNTESTED feature they introduced in Mavericks latest release.

All the best for 2014 - eg. a solid Mavericks patch...ASAP!

Was given a working solution by a savvy friend-

Here it is:

- Disk Utility, check permissions then repair permissions

- Open Finder, Library (Alt-Go), Caches

- Move ALL subfolders to trash

- shutdown

- press ALT, CMD, R and P keys while poweting up, until screen flicks

- let it boot normally

- empty trash !

DONE - problem solved ! Thuderbolt devices go to power saving AND restart!!!

I was the original poster for this display issue. Rebooting in Safe Mode solved the issue for probably about 2 weeks on one of my Mac Minis, then the issue returned. I also have a Macbook Air, and after the Safe Mode reboot, I have not experienced the problem any more on that computer. I'm wondering if it's an issue related to certain on board graphics chips because I have an i5 Mini that has a separate grphics accelerator without issues running Mavericks.

These days, I just do a quick resolution change in the system tools, and the windows become reactive again.

I am glad some of your issues are resolved.

possibly your thoughts on graphic board chips could explain different behaviors you observed.

for the remaining problems, have you tried switching cables from one machine to another and if so is the problem "switching" machines at the same time ?

Anyway, it looks like a HW/SW regression that next Apple release should fix.

just wanted to give an update from earlier. my local MUG (Mac user group) believes that this problem is software not hardware related. However, after my 4th call to Apple Care since Mavericks -- I got moved up to a Senior Tech or Level 2. Once again, I have a 2012 MacBook Air 13.

He claims it is a hardware problem and he wanted me to get my Air looked at by Apple for logic board failure. I hemmed and hawed and disputed this assertation. The tech claims that because the PowerManagement.plist file does not recreate itself when I delete it -- this is indicative of logic board failure.

I even did a clean install of Mavericks via the download from Apple using the Recovery (boot to Command + R) and this .plist file was missing. I trashed the entire SystemConfiguration plist folder and they all recreated themselves except for PowerManagement and AutoWake.

1. PowerManagement did recreate itself when I set the default Computer Sleep to something other than 15 minutes

2. AutoWake recreated itself when i created a sleep event (ex. put this Mac to sleep at 2:15 PM)

I contemplated simply using this Air as a Boot Camp machine in Windows 7. Mavericks handles Boot Camp way better than Mountain Lion in my opinion. However, ultimately, I wanted to give this Senior Advisor at Apple Care his satisfaction and send in the MacBook Air. I chose the mail in over the local Apple Store because the store has a bad habit of taking about 7 days for a Mac repair.

In March of last year I lost this Air for 7 days due to a faulty hard drive. Apple couldn't even get their own proprietary part in a timely manner. Therefore, I am a pretty unhappy customer.

I got through to Apple Executive Resolutions and offered a proposal -- to be able to buy a non-retina MacBook Pro at 1/2 the student price or $500. They responded that they cant do this -- but they can offer $100 off a refurb or $899. Or I can just use my student discount (which I can do anyway) and buy one at $999. At $999, I am a Dell or Lenovo customer. Enough of this garbage!!!

Jan 17, 2014. Two months after this happened for those above....

This just started happening for me as well. Afer sleep, on eof the apps locks itself up in the top left corner. I have had this happen with Mail. Now it is happening with Calendar. It makes the app almost unusable as I cannot see the hours for the meetings. Nor can I close the app normally.😟

I have booked a call with Apple support in the morning.

Does anyone have a fix from Apple on this yet?😕

fyi another similar thread here

in my case the problem happens every once in a while, sometimes days or weeks go by before it happens. my iMac is set to never sleep, but display is set to sleep after 15min. I use fast-user switching to change users or temporarily set the login screen when I'm away from my desk. I don't have any screensaver set. So the problem isn't triggered by the computer going to sleep or a screensaver.

every once in a while when logging back in from fast-user switching, the problem occurs. whatever windows were front-most before I switched to the login screen are the windows that are shrunk and stuck in the top left corner when I log back in. but it's totally unpredictable. as I said it might happen once then not again for weeks. or maybe it will happen the next hour.

if you haven't seen the tip already, a temporary way to unstick the windows is to change the location of your dock in settings. the shrunk windows then reposition themselves so that you can close or grow them, no need to quit the app to fix their appearance

this problem never happened before upgrading to Mavericks. and it's not the only odd thing I've noticed with the login screen since upgrading...

I just wanted to let everyone know that this problem gnawed at me to no end. Apple even replaced the logic board and display on my 2012 MBA 13 inch -- $800 in free repairs -- before they realized it was a software problem.

My MBA overheated and froze again on Jan. 21. I had enough!! In another issue, unrelated to this one, I have grown VERY unhappy with the trend in Macs toward being more proprietary and less self repairable. I have been a Mac user since 2004, owned 8 macs -- 6 of those obtained directly from Apple. No one could question my loyalty to the brand.

As I sat there after my latest Mavericks related foul up on Jan. 21, I believed that the only "great Macs" left were the 13 inch non-Retna MBP and Mac Mini. These macs are serviceable -- both RAM and hard drive. I was on the phone with Apple Executive Relations in California. I had a feeling they were willing to give me what I wanted -- the 13 inch non Retina MBP. However, then I realized I would need to buy Apple Care on that. I just wasn't going to go down this road again. No way, San Jose (city Apple was calling me from).

I work with clients who are Mac and windows users. I have always been of the mindset that a good business class windows laptop is as good as any mac. You can disagree with me, but in my years of experience, I know I am right. I am not talking about the Windows PCs sold in big box stores. So want to know how I resolved the situation?

I got Gazelle to buy my MacBook Air for $460 and I went out and bought a current generation HP ProBook 450 G1 with 4th generation i5 processor. I was able to take advantage of a 1 time promo which got me $200 off. So for $760 I was good as gold -- 3 year on site HP warranty. I'm running Windows 7 and I won't look back.

I can report that rebooting in Safe Mode does NOT fix the problem, at least in my case.

as I mentioned in my previous post, sometimes many days or weeks go by without the problem occurring; other times it might happen more frequently.

but since my last post about 3 weeks ago, I decided to try the suggestion to reboot in Safe Mode, which I did shortly after my last post.

but today the problem happened again. so much for the "fix"
