Unless you purchase OS X server, US $20 in the Mac app store, you can't. Sync Services has been removed from Mavericks, thus you can no longer locally sync contacts/calendars.

I have followed several posts on this topic, and see that we fall into 2 categories. Those that think any info they put on company servers is ok, and those that don't. I for one do have personal info in my contacts that i do not want to share with Apple or any administrators that work for Apple (or any company or government organization). I ask that those who don't care, at lease understand that some people will use their contact app different than you do. Just because you don't store personal info in your contacts, don't automatically assume that no one else does.

My only immediate solution for this issue, is to downgrade back to Mountain lion for now. I have done this successfully on 2 mac's using time machine. On 1 mac i had a followup issue and had to completely rebuild it. So time machine isn't always the answer. But at least all my data was recoverable, and I am now doing local sync again. I do not know how much longer I will be able to do local sync, as it is only a matter of time before apple roles out some other patch that breaks IOS or itunes.

What gets me, is that I did a great deal of research before switching from windows to the mac world. I bought this equipment based on this capability. Why then are we subjected to the loss of this capability that effectively breaks our equipment and processess. I would further point out, that no clear warning was given, that local sync would be disabled. I have also researched going to Android devices, but so far, local sync for them is also broken with Maverick, because their software was built using the OSX sync service api. At this point I am looking for alternatives. Should 3rd party developers come out with fixes for their software, I am pretty sure that I will trade in my iphone for android and start migrating my machines to different technology.

For me Apple has basically"jumped the shark". Their luster is gone.

Hey wjosten. I'm not picking on you, but do you think that installing OSX server is an elegant solution for most people. In reference to these instructions: http://securityspread.com/2013/10/27/setting-sync-server/

I think this is beyond the scope of most people. Let's see,

1) buy another machine to become the server.

2) register a dns address for the server

3) Install Mac OSX server... by the way, how long do you think sync services will last on this OS?

4) post install, setup the server, user accounts etc.

5) migrate your contacts to the server, and then only use this to maintain it

6) add a card dav account

7) allow access to services

8) add another account

9) configure your iphone to connect to the services on the server.

And now lets not forget synchronizing between the server and your laptop.

Really?

We don't buy apple products to increase our time or complexity in arriving at a solution.

The point is, apple has taken away functionality that was already bought and paid for and has negativly impacted many users.

For some of us, the additional problem is that once you give in and go iCloud, no rep will tell you there are iCloud limits on iCal's size, so that if you're calendar is say 10 years old, with 10 events per day, and there's a 25K event limit, it won't work, even if you buy all the storage in the world. Which means that's syncing is OVER.

So as I've been told to find a "professional" calendar, so far I've tried three alt calendars: Fantastical (rated one of the top iCal alts); Pocket Informant (allegedly capable of superpowers); and Calendars. Not a single one is able to do the one simple task of

1) integrating an ical ics file,

2) placing a calendar program on the desktop and the iPhone

3) keeping them both in sync.

This is really getting to annoy me. Chelsea, a tech support supervisor, offered that if I pay $99/year I can become a developer and get the next beta iTunes which will allegedly offer local syncing. Great.

Looks like Fantasical does all three.

Add appt to iCal, Calendar or Fantastical and it syncs between them

Available for both Mac OS & iOS.

And Calendars syncs with the calendar app on your iPhone thus syncs with the calendar app on your computer.

and theFantastical app on the computer and iOS will sync these.

Fantastical desktop <-> Mac desktop Calendar

Fantastical desktop <-> Fantastical iPhone

Fantastical iPhone <-> iPhone Calendar.

So everything is sync'd

(just an FYI: As of Mac OS X 10.8, iCal was renamed simply Calendar)
