OS X 10.9 freeze when WiFi is turned off (POSSIBLE SOLUTION)

Hi, I just found a possible solution for this problem: my MacBook Pro freeze completely (without the spinning beach ball) after I turn off WiFi.

I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch late 2007 (MacBookPro3,1 - A1229), with a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB card, running OS X 10.9.

What happened:

- I updated the OS from 10.8.4 to 10.8.5

- My Mac started freezing everytime after login, I don't remember if WiFi was on or off

- Reverted back 10.8.4, thank you Time Machine!

- Updated to OS X 10.9

- Everything was OK, but then I did some work in my home and I had to turn off the modem

- Modem was off, so I decided to turn off also the AirPort card on my MacBook Pro

- After a couple of seconds my computer completely stopped responding, trackpad and keyboard were useless, the UI froze

- After pressing the power button I managed to shutdown the Mac and then start it up again

- Now after the startup process I was stuck in loop: WiFi was still off and I had few seconds to login, wait for my account to load and turn on WiFi from the menubar icon; I failed countless times!

- In an attempt to slow down the Mac and earn some more seconds I did a PRAM reset and logged in with the Shift key pressed (after typing my password)

- I managed to turn WiFi on and looked immediatly for clues on Console logs:

(Last line is me powering the Mac on, after a forced shutdown; for some reason some lines have been lost forever: before the last one, there were some more "awacsd ... KV HTTP 0")

This is what happen to my Mac when I turn off the AirPort card; I don't know if "Google Drive" or "libdispatch client" are the problem, but quitting Google Drive solved this madness.

Hope this helps.

For me the problems of new macbooks is:

1) glance screen (can be fixed with some kind of tape but why for.)

2) flat keyboard (cant be fixed)

3) too smal amounts of usb ports (can be fixed with usb hub but why for.)

4) price in russia

Now it will have also this awful design of ios 7. Even DOS had more design than this.

Meanwhile win8 gets better and better. By perfomance its already better (have it thru parallels)

mzt2, I wasn't going to buy a Yoga just yet, but I can tell you that the Apple support experience isn't always peachy!

I bought a PowerBook G4 in 2006 (online from the Apple store, that was before there was a physical store to walk into), which arrived with a dead firewire port. Rather than returning it, Apple asked me to take it to an 'authorised' service partner. I did, and two weeks later I was charged $800 for replacing the logic board.

Of course I questioned this, but was told the (brand new) PowerBook was out of warrenty by the service partner, whereas Apple said it was never registered for repair in the first place (effectively suggesting I was trying to commit fraud).

Six weeks later, just before trying to invoke a court injunction to retrieve my Power Book from the 'service partner', I decided to write a (physical) letter to Infinite Loop.

Finally, somebody from Apple intervened, and it turned out that the 'service partner' had in fact logged the wrong serial number (of a different model!). Nearly four months later, I finally had my PowerBook back.

Apple's support on this occasion was utterly appaling I have to say.

Incidentally, the MacBook related to this thread had its logic board replaced because of the Nvidia chip going up in flames, and the jokers at Apple forgot to program the serial number in (so my MacBook is a ghost).

Having said all that, when it works it works pretty well, and software like Logic and FinalCut is simply too good to ignore. I think they started neglecting their professional user base a little ever since the whole 'i'(...want-to-make-more-profit) stuff came out, but I guess with regards to content creation handheld seems to be the way things are going, and that's what Apple is really all about.

I wonder if there will ever be a 'Pad Pro' alongside the iPad...

Hi Bill,

sorry but I had the same problem with my old MBP 3,1 late 2007 since I upgraded to Mavericks (no problem with Snow Leopard - 10.6)

and the bad news is I upgraded to Yosemite today and the same thing happens :

if I turn the wifi (airport) off , the mbp freezes with no other choice to do a hard reboot (hold the power button until it shuts down)

The freeze occurs from a time that varies from instantly to a few minutes (longest time until it froze was half an hour !)

I'm wondering why this problem hasn't been fixed by Apple since it seems the problem appeared on this type of computer with 10.8 (maybe 10.7) and for me with 10.9 because I upgraded directly from 10.6 to 10.9

I regret I've updated my computer in late 2013 but I really think to install a second drive or partition with 10.6 on it: 10.9 and 10.10 are getting my MBP too hot ! or the fan too noisy with an app like Macs fan control.

I hope this helps ...

best regards

Huge bump but I recently reinstalled my laptop from El Capitan back to Mavericks and apparently this issue still hasn't been solved.

I remember I had this issue 2 years back as well so thankfully I figured out what was wrong and knew my laptop wasn't dead.

Bit strange that this is apparently a big issue with many users and it still hasn't been solved... And probably never will.
