Pioneer Blue ray burner does not work in a Mavericks.

MY Pioneer Blu Ray burner BRD-RW 206D does not work and I get this message (The disc can’t be used because the disc drive is not supported (error code 0x80020025). I have the last firm ware update in it. It worked fine in Mountain Lion but not in Mavericks.

I have the newer model the BDR-208D which was listed as compatible with the Mac before Mavericks and installed before I updated the OS.

Under Mavericks it does seem to work so that's a plus but every now and again the system seems to forget it is there and suddenly it's like I have no burner at all.

I used to get random "You have inserted a DVD what would you like to do with it" messages which when responded to seems to cause the drive to go missing so I turned off all those alerts in the CDs & DVDs control panel. Seems to have less issues now but seems like if an older piece of software goes looking for a DVD drive it can cause the Drive to go missing.

Just checked now and despite having used it a hour ago it is now not showing up. 😟

Same problem. It's a Mavericks issue as far as I'm concerned as it occured with a clean install of Mavericks on the same machine on a seperate partition. No problem on Mountain Lion.

My symptoms:

  • PIONEER BD-RW BDR-208D in lower drive of Mac Pro Early 2009.
  • Apple Superdrive in upper.
  • BD drive not recognized in "Eject" menu button.
  • BD drive is recognized in About this Mac.
  • Eject button on keyboard brings up the "You've inserted a blank disk ..." dialogue.

Just found a workaround to at least get the drive recognized.

  1. Boot up in Mountain Lion.
  2. Insert a commercial BD into the BD drive.
  3. Keep the commercial BD in the BD drive.
  4. Reboot in Mavericks.

Will revise / update as I work with it more.

Definitely an OS (Finder?) related problem.

I'm experiencing the same here, after Mavericks upgrade:

  • Pioneer BDR-208DBK in second (lower) bay
  • Mavericks on Mac Pro (early 2008)
  • Superdrive in upper bay

Drive not appearing in eject menu button, alt-eject on keyboard causes a dialog to pop-up: "The disc can’t be used because the disc drive is not supported (error code 0x80020025)".

About this Mac -> More Info... BD appears in SATA drive list.

Can anybody verify if Toast (or any other 3rd party burner) can access the BD ?

Ever wondered why Mavericks was released for free?

This way we cannot even protest for being used as beta testers... 😠

Similarly to Chad, rebooting seems to find it for a while. But it "gets lost" - is the best description I can muster - every now and then. It's totally random. Somedays it's there all day. Other days it's gone by 10am.

Rebooting always finds it again.

To answer alsand61Toast will work with it. Although I've yet to burn a blu-ray disk. But I have done DVD-Rs and CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

Also like alsand61 when it has dissappeared, I can also still see it in the More Info.

Is there any app or script that will poll SATA devices and remount ones that have unmounted??

Yes, following Chad's advice (i.e. boot from ML, insert non blank disk, reboot in Mavericks) I had the BD recognized and working... For a while, at least.

Then it stopped working altogether. It still appeared in the "eject" menu, though.

Rebooting finds it again.

And it even survives putting the machine to sleep.

I have now disabled "Put hard disks to sleep..." in the Energy Saver prefpane.

I'll let you know if it helps...

Hi, everyone

just wanted to report I've been 🙂successfully🙂 using my Pioneer BDR-208D for a couple of days now with no further problems.

I power-cycled and put to sleep the MacPro a few times, and burned a few DVDs and a couple of BD-RE disks.

So, to summarize my experience:

  • Pioneer BDR-208DBK in second (lower) bay
  • Mavericks on Mac Pro (early 2008)
  • Superdrive in upper bay
  • Drive not appearing in eject menu button, alt-eject on keyboard
  • dialog pop-up: "The disc can’t be used because the disc drive is not supported (error code 0x80020025)".

What I did:

  1. Booted back into Lion
  2. Inserted non-blank media in the BD drive (a CD in my case)
  3. Rebooted into Mavericks with the CD still inside the drive
  4. System found the drive and enable eject both on keyboard and menu
  5. Disabled "Put hard disks to sleep..." in Energy Saver prefpane - this is what I believe stopped the seemingly random disappearing of the drive

Hope this helps...

I am also having sucess now that I have Disabled Hard Disk Sleep.

Seems like that is the solution. Still have the occasion weirdness, like the eject opening the lower one now and again instead of Option Eject for the lower. But otherwise I think I can live with it. Hopefully updates to Mavericks will improve not worsen the situation.
