iPad Air glass break

-anyone else experience any broken glass? I ask because i had the iPad Air for about 31.5 hours, only used it for about 20 minutes other than the Apple representative that set it up fo rme in the stor, and the glass shattered at the thumb / home button area. wonder if thinner = more glass breakage. still have 3 others in household with no damage and two of those belong to my twin 9 years old boys and other to my wife for business needs. This is my first iPad. Genius bar said it will be at least a week for replacement even though they have new ones in store. With my Apple care it will cost about $49. I realize the Genius doesn't know me from the next person, but in a leather case (from wifes ipad 3) but it wasnt hit, banged, dropped. Disappointed.😟

I have a iPad air, 5 months, hairline crack appeared lower right hand corner. Single diagonal crack in the corner, about 4 inches long. I purchased Apple Care, was bumming that it'll cost $50 to repair, and only two screen repairs with Apple care.

I brought it to the store, Nashua NH, young guy looked at it, saw it was a hairline crack, no other dings, no other glass damage, he replaced it on the spot. I was in an out in under a hour, everything restored to my new iPad.

I LOVE APPLE.

I have a iPhone 5S, a 3G iPhone, Two Mac Books, Two iPods from them. This cracked screen was the first issue that I ever had. I still use all their products that I purchased over the years in some fashion.

WIll continue to buy Apple for their service. Products cost more, however nicer products, like the fact they have local stores with their people. Great service, polite people. My buddy says the same.

Reading the complaints on this thread. Never experienced anything bad from Apple yet. My experience has been all positive.

I have had an iPad Air for 3 weeks. A week ago, I bought a Lifeproof case for it for $120. Two days ago, I was using it, hit the "home" button, and the screen just shattered with a large crack at the corner of the button and spidering out from there. The cracks have gotten worse over past 2 days as I've continued to use it.

I took it to the Apple store and have to go back tomorrow morning for a Genius Bar appointment. I am going to be really disappointed if they do not replace this for no charge. To me, it's a huge design flaw if the screen just shatters like that when you press the button. This was after using it inside the case for a week with no problems at all. LifeProof, btw, does not actually cover any damage to the device, only will replace the case if there is a problem with the case.

MAybe there is some region issue store to store bias, attitude, training, overall store profit in play ? I return to Nashua nh, nice urban area. People working there always 100 percent nice, etc. possibly cities have to deal with more people with "personalities", that it affects the way they deal with folks.

i Brought mine in, within 5 seconds on looking at it, free replacement. Did not look up the serial number, nor any bit of who I was or were I purchased it from. Maybe if there is an apple store in a urban wealthier area, might be better to return there ? Shouldn't be, but, not everything is perfect in this world. Dress up nice also, like going to church, play the game.

funny, last night purchased some bose quiet comfort 15 from best buy, closer to me than the apple store. I ask a question to verify that the audio code pulls out, detaches from the headphones. Guy replied like a wise ***, something along the line that would be stupid, no. The cable does, he was wrong, but the point is this guy was no polite, guessed, didn't really know. I never get this attitude from apple stores.

lol, apple employees are well mannered and well groomed.

I Get a great feeling buying from their stores, good vibe, respect for paying more money for most things.

I am trying to make the argument that the glass should not shatter, while in a Lifeproof case, just when you press a button. The first thing they said was $299 replacement before taxes... I am seeing what else they can do, as I think there must have been a manufacturer defect if this broke within a few weeks of having it while doing nothing more than pressing the home button.

I am not going to ditch apple, but was about to buy 10 iPad Airs for my company... now I think I will do something else.

That's exactly how I hoped it would be and what I expect from Apple. You pay a big premium for their products and when one fails due to not being fit for purpose you don't expect to be fobbed off and made to feel like some sort of liar when you've been a customer for nearly 20 years and have never returned a device frivolously - all across the internet people are reporting similar problems with easy glass breakage on the Air.

It's also not good enough to have buy Apple Care when these things should be covered by satutory rights.

I don't believe in rewarding companies that act this this way with more money. Android it is when it comes to replacing my iPhone.

Screen of my iPad Air (purchased Nov 2013) cracked while I held in hand, the right hand: thumb on bottom right of screen, supporting back with fingers. Tilted top of airpad towards me - and the screen cracked beneath thumb. Movement does put pressure on screen at location of thumb. But clearly screen must be able to withstand such perfectly normal use.

iPad had always been in case. It never fell. No scratch, or dent or anything on bevel.

Visited Apple store in Amsterdam today. Apple declines to repair/replace under warranty (decision did involve a supervisor). Had to pay EUR 288 for new ipad - without personalisation (which I did have on iPad). Paid this under protest, and will separately complain to Apple.

Very much not pleased.

My iPad air broke within 2 weeks of owning it, i think the screens are alot thinner than on the previous versions of ipad. to say the least i was a little annoyed and phoned apple to see if the will repair it to which the told me they do not repair them they replace them and then gave me what i thought was a ridiculus price.

anyway i grab my iphone and search google and found THIS COMPANY, I sent them my iPad and received it back 2 days later with a new screen.

now i have bought an otterbox case an hopefully this time i will not break it.

Just an update on my experience...

When I attempted to replace the screen myself I used a hair dryer as opposed to my heat gun which was at work - I'm so **** impatient. But all the online tutorials used hair dryers. Anywho... Long story short, I instal my new screen but all but destroy my wifi antennae. Finding that the replacement screen I ordered online was defective (a tiiiny little "fleck" of the gold (if I remember correctly) band that goes around the parameter "flaked off." I was told this by the iFix it people that eventually replaced (successfully) my screen.

What I thought was funny, the Eastern-Europeanish, very pretty young lady that did the work confirmed that I did in fact do quite a job on my wifi hardware and that "it would get worse and worse as time passed." Is t that odd? I mean, it's not a cavity or male-pattern baldness. How the heck would a reception issues gradually get worse and worse? I wrote it off and happily walked with my now functioning iPad Air. Now, permanently encased in five layers of carbon fiber, a 12" layer of jelly doughnut filling surrounding the entire piece for shock absorption and lastly an otter box. I had the lifeproof piece but that's what my Air was in WHEN I DISCOVERED THE CRACK.

But, son of a gun, the cutie was correct! My reception went from 90% what I was used to, a week later down to about 50% and now - 4-6 weeks later I literally need to put my wifi router inside (it's very sticky) the jelly filling) in order to receive a signal. Can anyone explain this? I know I'm going to get 5 or 6 dumb ***** telling me it's because I all but destroyed the antennae but that's just the nature of message boards. My question is not why my reception is bad, it is why did the all but destroyed antennae perform almost-fine, poorly, then ****** all over the timespan of 4-6 weeks? Weird.

And Apple, when ya gonna fess up and pay us back for producing a significantly less durable iPad. It still stings. Steve would not approve. Please go back to the original glass thickness on the next gen which I will of course buy because - like a battered wife - I just you too much Apple. And I know deep down you love me.

My two stepdaughters both have young kids, both have iPad 2s and both have been abused and dropped. Both still function just fine.

It is hard to recommend the iPad Air to them due to the fragility of these cases. I have to say I'm disappointed even though I haven't had issues with my Air.

My iPhone though, iPhone 5 Black got scratched the first week I had it, the finish is pretty crap I have to say. They've released a few products now where they haven't put enough thought into making them tough enough for day to day use. A finish needs to be robust. In my case just the slightest scrape against anything would and did damage the finish.

My next phone probably won't be an iPhone if they're going to do the same for the iPhone 6. There is a lot of competition out there these days.

The iPad though has no real competition in my eyes in spite of this issue but just the same I expect something more robust next time around otherewise I'll just hold onto this one until something happens!

Adding another experience, FWIW. same story, it sounds like. iPad Air... I felt the "hollow" feeling of this glass from the start, as compared to earlier models. One day, there was a hairline crack in the bottom right corner... Gave my poor kids the third degree. Next day it's shattered on the whole bottom right hand corner. They swear up and down they didn't drop or do anything to it. We've had a total of five iPads in our household, and never anything like this. It's now been sitting on a table unused for a month... The glass is splintering and I'm afraid to let anyone use it, for fear of glass splinters in fingers. Hate the thought of having to pay another $300, when I got the thing for $270 after trade-in at Target. We don't have an apple store nearby either. Really disappointed in what sounds like a serious design flaw and quality defect. :-(

I had my Air repaired by an indie repair place. Perfect for a few months then just broke again. This time it broke while using it wih my young daughter under my nose. This first time there was zero trauma, this time it couldn't have recieved more than a minor bump.

Also, the screens can fracture and crumble as the glass is so thin and flexible leaving loose bits of glass so me careful with letting a child use a cracked one.

This is because your Air hasn't broken or you are monitoring the conversation. There are other technical threads you can respond to if you have no problem with the glass. This thread is about experiencing broken glass. My suggestion is you find the thread that most fits your needs.

As I have done nothing to violate the Terms of Use and provided pertinent information the last time I posted in this thread (4 months ago), I will continue to post here when and as I see fit. But thank you for your suggestion.

Best of luck.
