iCloud - can't sign in at this time

I have iCloud working via my Safari browser and my iPhone. But when I try and log-in to iCloud via my iMac's system preference I continually receive the following message, "you can't sign in at this time. try signing in again." It has been manifesting the same behavior for over 1 week. Any ideas? Stumped the Genius Bar. Really could use your help! Thanks.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

My wife tried to migrate to a new MBA 11 inch from a 2011 MBA 13 inch.

What fixed it for us. In terminal:

sudo rm -rf /Users/(her-login)/Library/Application\ Support/iCloud/Accounts/

Then a reboot, and re-registration of iCloud details when back in again.

What was still weird afterwards - MacMail sending a bunch of emails and calendar invites again - some many years old. We could delete some, as we quickly went offline, but others resent regardless. Also emails she deleted are back again. Also deleted iPhotos are back. We chose to migrate from a very very fresh TimeMachine backup. That last has happened to her before.

Earlier today she took one 11" back to the apple store because of an insurmountable FileVault stuck on "Encryption Paused". Luckily for her the machine locked up completely in front of the GeniusBar guy, and he said he'd just replace it with a new one, and didn't even dig too far into the open case ID for the online Apple support.

I had the same problem after migrating from a Macbook Air to a Macbook Pro with Migration Assistant.

Today I had a talk with a senior advisor. We tried different things and this was the solution:

Go to Computer/Macintosh HD

Then to Library/Preferences and look for a folder: SystemConfiguration.

Move it to trash, restart the computer and login to iCloud.

I had the same issue for a couple of months with my daughters account. But I had it solved today.

In the ~Libary/Keychain folder she had over 1950 keychain files! I deleted them all EXCEPT the newest one. Also I did NOT delete other directories in this folder. After this I successfully logged on to iCloud using the system preference pane.

This also resolved an issue I had with Safari, where I was not able to use extensions: after quitting and opening safari I had to enable and configure the extensions again, every single time.

Hope this works for you also. Good luck.

OK... much simpler fix...

I noticed in terminal mode, when listing permissions for /User/username/Library that "Application Support" was not owned by the same user as all of the other files (username).

So, you can use from Terminal, the chown command..

But you'll need to be sudo to do it...

so, the command will be

$sudo chown "Application Support" username

Fixed it up rather nicely.

I called AppleCare about this issue. They directed me to "Date & Time" in System Preferences and lo-and-behold, the date had become incorrectly set somehow. I believe that the computer's iCloud software will deny incoming connections from the iCloud server if the date and time are not the same as the one displayed on the iCloud server's SSL certificate as a security precaution.

I, too, had that problem. There are in fact a couple of posts from me along those lines. Notice the word "had." What did I do to fix it? Probably nothing. Oh, I expended enough effort, deleting caches, and apps, and eventually the whole of iCloud that I could still get to via my iPod. Nothing worked. With everything restored, the one major change I undertook on the Mac was switching to Safari from Chrome. After that, my sign-in worked, even my Password did. However, I don't think I had anything to do with it. In fact, I looked for the other flaws suggested and the fixes applied and would have gladly attempted the appropriate cures, if I had found any, but I didn't! There's only one common denominator that I can see, and it is Apple revamping the iCloud, making the major Apple office suite free in the process (Pages, Numbers, Keynote, etc.) that did it. And those of us who suffered the unfortunate "wait until h**l freezes over" dialogue just fell between the cracks in one really sweeping operational overhaul (read "screwup"). It would have been nice -- gosh, it would have been decent if Apple would have told us, privately, individually, or by shouting it from the rooftops, to just hold tight -- there's a change coming that will solve your problem. But I don' think anyone received that courtesy. If I'm wrong, please tell me. I'll be ever so happy to know that there is still community spirit among a few businesses today, well, among Apple execs. I love the fact that, now that I've paid for them, the apps are free. I just rue the hours -- and I do mean hours, probably cumulatively over a day, maybe two, I spent in trying to remedy the issue. Bottom line: I can now login to the Cloud from my Mac and I'm grateful. I just don't know to whom.
