Ipad air low memory crash

I came to this forum to see if other ipad air owners are experiencing same problem with low memory crashing as I do but seems like I'm one of the few people have this. So far I have 10 low memory crash reports. I also have about 30 more crash reports but it's from various apps. I got my ipad air on the launch day, second in line, here in California. Maybe I just have a defective one, I don't know. If you have same issues, please reply so I can determine if I should return it or just live with it. Closing apps every day is a hassle. I wish Apple just put in extra gig of ram. Overall, I am extremely happy with my ipad. There are so many good this things to mention about this ipad but this is wrong thread to do that.

Hi everyone

Not wanting to hijack this thread and I haven't read all pages but most.....

I was sooooo waiting to buy my first ipad (mini) in these new releases. Then that became soooooo wanted to buy my first ipad (air) and tablet and also managed to put myself in a great spot to get a good price (store vouchers and discounts) that this stuff up/short fall has totally stopped me in my tracks.

One of my primary uses of a tablet (50 %) I envisage will be web browsing with 33% games for me and my toddler hence my concern. I will also use for viewing photos and video (I'll use the mac for editing).

I'm now strongly considering buying the fire kindle hdx (8.9"). I'm accepting of it's smaller (medium) size which is larger than the nexus 7. Having an imac as my premium pc am I going to enter into a world of problematic dramas using these two different "ecosystems". I know amazon does not have as many apps but I'm thinking it had most main/popular ones. Or should I wait for the next ipad with 2gb in 4 or 10 months time?

Any guidance views on this? Anyone else thinking the same.

This appears to be a sad day for apple - under spec'd tablet. And then there was the issue last year when I bought the imac of announcing the new imac but not having it available for a few months due to production issues. Apple seems to be "winging it" a little bit in trying to keep ahead of its competition or fixing themselves to announce new products when the timing against opposition releases dictates it regardless of their products being almost 100% ready to go. Or maybe that's the IT world as a whole?

Again apologies if this question here is misplaced

Dec 5, 2013 9:57 PM in response to Crows2012

Your comment is not misplaced. My perspective to your comment: I use my desktop for digital artwork using Photoshop, Teragen, Bryce, Universe and photo editing. I never expected my iPad to handle these tasks, rather I think of it more as a personal assistant. I accept it's limitations. In that role, I feel it handles my tasks admirably.

I own a iPhone 4S and an iPad 3. Both have served me well with no problems or crashes all the way to iOS7.0.4.

I purchased the iPad Air on day one and almost immediately saw it crash multiple times. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. I read this entire thread and last Friday, contacted an Apple advisor who suggested that I wipe it clean an do a hard wire re-install of iOS7. I went to the Genius Bar to have this done and to document my problem because I intend to ask for a refund if he Air continued to crash. It has been 6 days since I had it "fixed" and so far, I have not experienced any crashes. After reading this tread, I seem to be in the minority.

I consider the iPad Air the best designed, most elegant tablet at this time. However, if it starts to crash the way it did a week ago, I will ask for a refund.

There will always be "new and better " devices coming off the line. 2GB?, probably. 4K iMac 's probably. When to pull the trigger is the tough part.

Personally I think once Apple fixes the iOS7 memory management issues it's been plagued with, the iPad Air 1GB model will be fine. What's unfortunate is all of us who have been burnt by the lack of oversight and the frustrating silence of Apple regarding this matter. As I stated previously, I returned the Air and found a 128GB flawless iPad 4 for an insanely good deal. I seldom get crashes on the 4 with iOS7.0.4. I would say about 1/20th the amount of crashes on the 4 compared to the Air, which to me truly indicates the 64bit prowess vs. the ram size + the funked memory management of IOS7.

Looking back at the history of your iPad ownership (personally i've owned a 2,3,4, mini, and Air) and what made my currently relationship to my iPad so solid and appreciated was its dependability and reliability. The Air experience, though short at a mere 2 weeks and about 50 crashes - left a coating of wasabi in my mouth that wont be easily washed away.

I think i'm most anticipating an official "bug/fix" report from Apple to address these low memory issues. I want to see what they admit to regarding this clear botch of current gen tech. This will highly determine my future with their products.

Then again from Apple's perspective, I suppose it wouldn't be good for the share holders if they just came out and said.. "yeah, pretty much every iPad Air is crashing, and existing iPad's have had an 65% increase in crash rate after moving to our latest OS".

I will reiterate - moving back to the 4 was a good choice for me as I seldom get any crashes. i think it's been at least 5-6 days without a crash at this point, whereas the Air would crash at least 5-6 times a day.

Hi and thanks for your notes on your experience with the air

i'm not fussed with the "new and better" option around the corner - especially when it's 12 months normally between ipads but the safari crashing has frozen my purchase

if a 2 gb comes out ANY time next year I am happy to buy one now and then sell and upgrade next release and have that ipad last me another 2-3 years ideally. (especially as i can pick up the ipad at 20% off due to vouchers and staff discount this time).

however i'm fearful of buying a lemon - it's one thing buying an ipad now with a few hiccups (ie a little bit of crashing that sometimes happens, as it does with my iphone 4s every now and then - i rarely have less than 6 tabs open) versus buying a product that is totally r00ted (and i dont mean in a tech geek kind of way) that will only do my head in.

** i find it odd that i'm thinking of buying a product that will have some drama with it - it's just a matter of how much **

in my curious searching for android alternatives, EVEN though i like the idea of staying in one ecosystem for simplistic and compatability reasons, i have come across that Kindle fire hdx and it does look VERY slick against a slightly underperforming ipad and competitive even against a good one

BUT i dont want to open that pandora's box if that is going to do my head in. i'm thinking however it may not do my head in, based on how i will and what i'll use my tablet for (surfing, games and my own ripped music) mind you i guess it's easier to sync my ripped cds on to an ipad than learn to use/find other programs for my kindle.......better the devil you know????

did i mention this is doing my head in!!!!!!

i also am disappointed that (almost) all these tech sites that have reviewed the ipad air and told everyone all about it's bells and whistes and how great it is, by either playing with it for a week or simply reading the press release have not come back to explore and discuss this (supposed) issue of the 64 bit and the 1gb (anand excused) - is that just me??

so...my choices are...

1) buy an ipad air and cross my fingers that ongoing safari crashes get solved via software updates (ios 7.4???) and later upgrade to next release - but take that risk of "frustration at hand" (literally) - souns as if spoken like a 15 year old boy (i'm 43 for the record)

2) just wait for apple to announce a fix and or new ipad in the coming months/quarter and have one less toy in the meantime

3) look a little further into the kindle and if i buy one enjoy a great working product (looks great) with this (on the other side) potentially opening up a can of worms and headache - should i keep it simple and not? My wife had a samsung galaxy and i am glad i replaced that with an iphone 5s (video compatability issues with imac without converting files). i dont want that again.

that's my dilemna

if anyone knows more re the kindle fire or can help in my decision, let me know

cheers all

I have read about the Kindle Fire HDX; it has a sharper screen than the ipad air, double the ram and a 2.2 quad core processor. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, said on 60 minutes last sunday that they are selling the Kindle Fire HDX almost at cost. So that means the 8.9 inch Kindle cost close or over $300 to produce. The iPad Air cost about $169 to produce. So the Kindle cost almost double to manufacture. I also read that Amazon engineers have tweaked the touch input software, removing a lot of the glitchyness of the Android OS. So I doubt you could go wrong with that.

Another option is to buy an iPad 4 new, and leave IOS6 on it without updating to IOS7. There are some great deals on the remaining iPad 4's that are still in stores.

I would stay away from the iPad Air, as I have repeatedly stated 1GB of RAM simply isnt enough- especially for a 64 bit CPU.

i've thought about doing the ipad 4 option (looking for 64gb cellular) but that isn't quite sitting well with me - going to the lesser cpu. (i'd feel defeated at the time of asking to buy one at the counter)

What has also stopped me from that is that if i bought the ipad air (on a prayer) v buying the ipad 4 the resale of the two will be quite different and my salvage on the ipad 4 might be enough for a soda and BLT 🙂

i was recently thinking my only option was to roll the dice and see if i got lucky with the crashes (lack of). If i didn't somehow get lucky (and no solution was forthcoming from apple) i'd sell for a small loss (say 15%) - that even sounds crazy when i type it!!!!

i'm no tech whiz at all but having done quite a bit of reading in the last 2 weeks 1GB sounds so 2012!!! no matter how much various elements of the hardware and software improve how the ipad works, surely that cant override the 1gb limiation v 2 and 3gb in other tablets (not too mention the 64 bit requirements/adjustments on ram needs).

IT'S CRAZY I TELLS YA!!!!

Now i'm thinking i'll go tinker with the Kindle Fire HDX and if it feels as good as they say, pick one up, use it (hopefully) til the next ipad comes up and decide then if i have any interest changing to an apple ipad. The more i think about it the more this makes sense, and only by "suck and see" will i know how user friendly this will be for MY purposes and uses. Seems to have less chance of major downside on this and some chance of pleasant upside - it does look on paper and in reviews as a bit of a beauty.

BTW....are there thoughts here re the ram crashes that these issues re VERY widespread against all ipad airs (eg 80%)? it seems there are only a few places screaming loudly about this as opposed to it being broadcast on a broader scale - any views on that question??

and

I read that people here have gone to apple stores and shown staff these crashes on their ipads but are these also being seen on the ipads on display too??

cheers

There doesn't seem to be anything useful going on in this thread but I need to add my voice. I've had about 8 crashes in the last hour and had plenty since I got the Air (16GB WIFI)

Crashes in chrome, safari, Digg and Flipboard.

Really unimpressed. Finally relented and bought into the apple (non iphone) ecosystem and regretting it completely.

The only thing I can say is that I played with the iPad Air in two stores and made it crash in a few seconds. I opened wathever app, double clicked the home button, swiped through all open apps very fast and selected a random app. Crash! If it didn't work the first time, I tried again and it did crash.

Amazing how many lowmemory errors are listed in the diagnostics logs.

In total I played with them about 10 minutes, they crashed at least 5 times.

Just a few crashes too much! I hope to see improvements soon so I can go for the iPad Air.

My girlfriend has an iPad 3 with ios 6 and she has the same problem. Going on the famous link of 9to5mac makes it crash. Belgian audi app crashes. It seems to work better while closing all other open apps, but I'm not sure about this statement.

All errors I'm talking about are the lowmemory errors.

apart from the geniuses in these stores is there a sense of knowing from the floor staff?

i haven't been in a store since late beg november when i was not yet aware of this issue

is there a little nod or a knowing wink evident in the other staff? did you speak to anyone?

i have a "guy" here in sydney at the bondi store who is a straight up decent kind of guy (he actually explained reasons for me NOT to get apple care when i bought my imac). if i am in the store or passing in the near future - like next week to play with the kindle fire, for my own curiousity i'll see if he is in and if there is anything he can add

Had the iPad 1, iPad 2 and not one issue with crashing like this.

From about the second day my Air has crashed twice and then last night started getting the Low Memory crash. I thought this was the first time it had happened but after checking my logs it's happened before when I haven't been using the iPad.

Not happy and have booked at my Genius Bar for Sunday. Thinking of asking for a new one.

Dec 6, 2013 3:22 AM in response to DIVX360

There's absolutely no point asking for a replacement as it's a firmware issue and not hardware, I am now on my second iPad air and it is exactly the same ,it also happens on the iPhone 5s i'm dealing with some technical support but they just keep Reading from the papers in front of them and Are no help whatsoever, all they do is keep offering me a replacement which is no good to me as the new iPad air will be exactly the same Apple get it sorted

Dec 6, 2013 3:25 AM in response to Crows2012

No, I didn't talk to the people in the shop. It was an official apple retailer, not an apple store. I didn't wat to start the discussion because I taught it wasn't going to end up in an answer anyway. So I decided to have a look in the forums. Talking to people in apple stores, genius bars or apple care would make more sense I guess.

In Belgium the iPad Air came out beginning of November. I immediately went to the store and immediately checked the logs. Knowing the issue from my girlfriends iPad 3 with ios 6 ...

from googling further tonight and looking to even buy i can not see any note of the KF HDX 8.9 being available in Australia in 4G/Cellular.

great - another dilemna and short fall for my ideal situation

mmmmm....i'm a little closer to waiting for next ipad. surely we will have an update in first half of 2014 for the love of.........

(4g too important for me as needing web browing whilst commuting. i might have to simply stay with my iphone 4s for now)

Dec 6, 2013 7:15 AM in response to Martyn28

This is exactly what happened to me. If I remember it correcly I have my 4th iPad Air replacement. Somehow I've been using my other previous iPad gen and my iPad mini with no retina. I never had any crashes. Last night I noticed my iPhone 5 started having the same issue of crashing and showing the Apple logo and going back to the home screen.
