iPhone 5s battery percentage incorrect

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the new iPhone 5s or the iOS 7.0.3 update. The issue is that the battery indicator is not displaying the correct battery percentage.

With my previous iPhone 4, I always turn off my phone before plugging it in to recharge. This would cause the phone to turn on by itself as soon as I plugged it into the outlet. With the iPhone 5s, I still do this but I've gotten lazy and would sometimes plug the phone into the outlet without first turning it off. That's when I started noticing the problem.

When the phone is restarted and charging, after it finishes charging and I unplug the phone the battery percentage shows 100% and everything appears okay. With the phone (power state on) and charging, after it finishes charging the battery percentage shows 100% as well, but as soon as I unplug it from the outlet, it drops down to 97% or 96%. As soon as I restart the phone, the percentage displays correctly at 100%.

I did this several times over the course of the week and noticed that I had to restart the phone in order to get the correct battery percentage. That said, I didn't restart the phone this morning but instead plugged the phone back into the outlet. As soon as I plugged the phone back into the outlet, the percentage showed 100%. Unplugged the phone and it showed 96%. Plugged it back in and it was again 100%. After doing this for the 3rd time, with the phone plugged in, the battery showed 96% so I left it plugged in until it got back to 100%.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Any ideas?

Has anyone find a solution or explanation to this? Is it soft or hardware related?

I have just a bit over a month old 5s with 7.1.1 and it recently started to do this. At first it just didn't charge battery to 100% overnight, it just stopped at 99 or 98 or 97%. I tried to solve this with battery calibration etc. without a solution.

This originally described issue as in the first post started after I made some normal things such as restore from backup or restore as new.

Now it's 3rd morning in a row when I unplug my phone from charger and it shows 100% before and 99 or 98% immidiately after unplugging.

I'm just thinking if someone have noticed any difference after updating to iOS 8 or maybe there is some other solution to this?

Serious science or throwing chicken bones?

Hello Guys!

Got also an iPhone 5S and it shows also wrong percentages, but more in the lower ranges (20% - 12%).

I only can describe what work for me. Sure it will not be the solution for everyone but may it will help some with the iPhone battery gauge.

My iPhone shows wrong percentages for one year or something like this. It was never a problem for me because there was always a charger or external battery nearby.

At the moment I have to travel more and more it became a bigger problem for me.

I try the recalibrating process over and over again, but my phone still died at a percentage between 12% and 14% . Often I even tried to let the battery that empty that even the red charging symbol couldn't appear, after that I charged it full over 4 hours or even over night. Nothing!

Every time I plugged in the wall charger, USB charger or battery pack, instant the apple logo appeared in the display the iPhone was booting up and show a percentage between 13% and 16%. Simultaneously I got the feeling that 100% works longer than all the other percentage.

Interesting was over the hole time, if I was playing with the charger at 12% - plugging in and out - the lock screen charging status shows me "1% charged" and the status bar still showed 12%. Like this one just with 1% instead of 7%:

So guess something is really wrong here! After the status bar charged to 13% the lock screens also showed 13%.

Seems that one part of the phone exactly knew's, what the charging status is and another part of the phone has no glue. Should be a software problem right? BTW with coconut battery I proofed the health of my battery and it seems to be ok. So please no answers with "your battery is damaged or aged" - really no!

I gave up for this moment, thought about buying a new phone or replacing the battery.

Then some weeks ago the iOS update from 9.3.2 to 9.3.3 came out. I did the update, use my phone and recognize nothing new. Some evening my phone ran out of battery, but I was to lazy to stand up and get a charger. In the morning after this evening I plugged in my iPhone as usual and wait for the boot screen. But at the first time after a long time the phone just tell me that its charging and doesn't boot instantly after plugging in the charger. So I started it!

And surprise surprise! My iPhone battery gauge shows me 1%.....2%....3%.... finally! I was very happy about and thought the developer guys from Apple made my day. I was posting in different communities and forums that that have to be the solution for all our problems! FAIL!

I made the update very late so after two or three days of happiness and a apparently endless battery, the Update to iOS 9.3.4 came out. I made (and I had a bad feeling about this from the beginning) and all the fairy dust was gone.mSame behavior, the phone died at a percentage between 12% and 16%. Booting instantly after plugging in the charger etc. etc. etc.

At first I was restoring the Update to iOS 9.3.3 as a completely new setup... wait for two days with the whole process of calibration. Nothing. Even going back to iOS 9.3.2 and made the update to iOS 9.3.3 - nothing. So I was reading and reading in forums and communities, tried the calibration process with 9.3.4 over and over again. Hopeless... Nothing changed - except my eBay bid-list was growing with other iPhones. The fact that I am actually stay in Israel and it is difficult for me to receiving packages let my investigate again.

In my opinion the process of updating have a effect to the iPhone battery gauge. So I was downgrading to iOS 9.3.3 again. Tried the calibration process for 2 two days again. Nothing.

Yesterday I upgrade to iOS 9.3.4 again. Tried to calibrate the battery again and in the evening the phone died at 16% percent as usual. I let it rest for the night. I have to admit - all hope was gone.

This morning I plugged in the charger and it happen again. The phone just show me the red battery symbol and shut off the screen instead booting up and show wrong percentages. So I booted it up to proof the effect and actual status. And look there! 1%....2%.... Now I shut the phone off so that it can charge a little bit faster. After that I will let it running out of battery and proof again the behavior of the percentage gauge. I hope somewhere here is the solution. Or my iPhone is just playing with my feelings.

May someone else with the same problem can try also the last part. Downgrade for one or two days. Do the calibration process for 2-4 times, upgrade it again, do the calibration process for 1-2 times again, let it run out of battery, till shutting off, let it rest for one longer night or 8-10 hours and try to charge it.

May it sounds insane what I wrote but I believe, may there is a solution in this way for all those who also spend days and weeks with research and calibration processes.

I will write an update if anything new happens. If this way won't work again longer than 2 days, may I have to check with the developer tools what's happening inside processes.

So stay tuned and good luck for your devices.
