I had tried everything here, but nothing worked.

I was able to get it to work by going to

"settings; general; "USE SLIDE SWICH TO:" Lock Rotation / Mute." I switched it to "Lock Rotation"

SLOVED!!! it was back to normal.

I had the same problem. Took it to the Genius Bar and they said that I have corrosion on the pins of the docking/charging port. They cleaned it as best they could but it still didn't work. Their solution: replace it for $250. Nope. Took it home and put some lighter fluid on an old toothbrush, and cleaned the port. Sound works fine now. WARNING this WILL void your warranty, but since they said I needed to replace it, it was worth a try for me. Obviously turn your iPad off before doing this, and let the lighter fluid fully evaporate (1 hr) before turning back on.

For people still having sound problems in the iPad.

There are some possibilities for sound problems - most of them are really simple:

(1min 36sec)

It covers the basics:

  • checking side-switch / mute / "Control Center"
  • volume all up

...and also the worst cases:

  • closing all apps (for rare cases when a single app might render the sound system instable)
  • rebooting the iPad

So, don't get desparete: try the things in the video.

There are people who reported having forgotten an audio-bluetooth connection activated with a turned-off sound-system or speakers... or forgot Air-Play turned on... so be sure you disengage bluetooth and/or airplay.

On the 'hardware side', dirty dock connector (30 pin) can make the iPad 'think' it is connected to external audio - if so, cleaning it with a dry toothbrush can fix. Also, moisture in the headphones connector can make the iPad switch to 'headphones' even without headphones connected, making it silent: check if you can hear things with headphones plugged in - if so, try gently inserting and removing headphones a few times and check if you get sound back to iPad's speakers alone.

Once more: no need to reset settings, nether restore - save your time.

I have had this problem with my ipad 2 twice now. The first time I was able to fix with 10 second hold home and the sleep button for reboot. The second time I tried everything that was in every thread I found including: cleaning charging connector, sliding mute button, soft reset in settings (even the reset choice that wipes settings and media), updating OS, disabling bluetooth as it could be connected to a speaker and few other things. The only thing that worked is a tip from someone in this support community which suggested to go to youtube and do a search by the microphone button (like SIRI type search). This will ask accesses to your microphone so say yes and the external speaker will star working. In my case the sound through the headset always worked, so check to see if you get that to make sure you have similar problem like mine. I'm thinking that this is old hardware/advanced OS problem and I predict it will come back to me soon. Probably few people have real issue with failed hardware and will never find a fix, but the majority are software related. Some will get it fixed with reboot or reset but maybe it's time to start looking into a new generation ipad!!!!!!!

We have had all of these problems and have tried every solution recommended in the string above. We did the hard reboot, we reloaded the iPad, we even restored a previous backup version, we did a full erase & restart of the device which caused us to lose all of our defined network connections, we reconnected to a Bluetooth and then disconnected again. We tried everything. We even went to Apple support and they could not get it to stop failing. Within a few minutes the sound would fail again.

However, when I removed the Xfinity app from the device, no more sound problems at all. I have not seen that solution anywhere in this string. For those in the future who may have the problem, try removing that software. It fixed our issue. It would likely fix yours without going through all of the above headaches and colossal waste of your time.

In all fairness, I have made a new discovery after going through a series of frustrating phone calls with APPLE, with the representative claiming it has to be a hardware problem. I had convinced myself this was software problem because of the similarity to the discussions above, and the coincidence with IOS 7 upgrade, but it is not. I have just discovered that when I squeeze the bottom of the ipad 2 near the speaker, the sound magically turns on. There seems to be a "sweet spot" where I can apply very light pressure to engage the sound. Unfortunately, when I release the pressure the sound reverts to off. There is obviously a loose connection inside the pad. Becasue the IPAD is out of warranty, MAC will only extend a 249.00 exchange fee.....So much for keeping the customer happy, but I retract my comment that it is fradulent programmed obsolecence.

I just returned from The Outpost, which is an Apple support store. My ipad 2 had no volumne and I asked them to see if they could figure out why it was not working. They could not. They suggested that it could be either a hardware or a software problem and because I no longer had warranty, they could look into it for a fee. They asked how old my ipad was and it is only 2 years old. They suggested that it could be outdated!!!!\

I thanked them, came home and Googled how to fix. Suggestion was to to to General and do a reset. Thank you for your suggestion. This not only worked, it saved me $$$ as well as well as made me realize that the staff they have working in these stores need to be more aware of how to deal with this problem, which seems to be quite frequent.

Thanks again
