Try a reset: hold down the home button and the sleep/wake button together until you see the apple, then let go.

I have the same problem. Everything was working fine, then I did the latest update. No sound except when I use headphones. This applies to everything, music, all apps including facebook, vine and YouTube, alerts, games...etc...

I have done:

A reset, holding sleep & home buttons

Complete restore to factory settings from my home computer

Checked the slide switch, it is set to lock rotation

Volume rocker buttons do not work, sometimes when I hit the volume rocker buttons, a grey box with a bell comes up that says "sound effects" but not volume. And it doesn't do anything

Reset all settings in general

Checked the settings in "sounds" ringers and alerts are set to "change with buttons"

Cleaned the headphone and dock ports with a soft brush and alcohol

I do not have an Apple TV or airplay, so those options are not available to change

Nothing has worked!

Anybody else out there have any suggestions...this has to be related to the iOS 7.3 update as everything was working normal before this update.

Oh Gosh... you could describe exactly the same issues I am having with my Ipad.

I also have everything you did and nothing works.

It looks like for a few Ipads works just resetting, others just changed Mute/Lock mode also works...

I feel more like being older versions having issues with elecronics components. Would Apple fix this or change our Ipads?

Thanks

I went to apple today and they CHANGED my ipad..... The swear there is not problem with hardware..... when I showed him the amount of complaints, he said: Oh don't worry we are gonna change your Ipad anyway..... TIP: My warranty has expired since September 2013....

Or I was lucky.... or they have to change IPADs because of this error in the new update!

I still happen to have my extended warranty through Geek Squad at Best Buy. They ordered me a "new" iPad and I'm waiting for it to arrive and making do with my iPad using external speakers.

To those comments above: no it is not on "no disturb", nor is it on mute.

I'm happy to hear they replaced your iPad inspirevida... we do not have an Apple store anywhere near us. Even when your warranty was expired...I agree it seems like non admittance to me.

The tech guy at geek squad recommended not doing the 7.0.3 upgrade until there is a known fix. Yeah I get to go back to IOS 6!!! I hate iOS 7!

Yes and NO... lol

I went to the store and showed them how many compalints from people having exactly the same issue. At the beginning they said NEVER software-hardware issue. After taking my IPAD inside they decided to EXCHANGE for free my ipad which warranty had expired 2 months ago.

It is my deepest opinion that older ipads were built with certain kind of electronic component that cant read the comand to allow user shifting between mute/locked rotation. Now they have to change the IPADS to allow clients continued service..... Again this is my hypothesis.

Good luck!
