Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 13'' Wifi Issues

My new MBPR's wifi is very slow and constantly drops the connection, although it is showing that it is always connected. If I restart the computer it fixes the problem for a little bit then it starts again. I have a 2012 Macbook Pro on the same network with no isseues, and I will have to use it sometimes just to be able to browse the web. Is there any way to fix the issue on the new Macbook?

Well, I had to disable WMM again, as it caused havoc on my other devices.

Now the internet on my rMBP is slower than ever, and I'm getting dropped packages, which didn't happen before. Thinking on getting an Airport router. Anyone know if these work without issue?

This is my first Mac, and I got it as it's supposed to just work. I've been having nothing but trouble with wifi, and also there's issues with my WD Mybook Live and OS X in general. Come on Apple.

They are absolutely working on this. I have had several follow up calls from Apple regarding this issue.

It just takes time to work through all of the problem reports, identify the root cause(s), develop a fix, and test the fix before releasing it. No doubt they are also working with the WiFi chipset vendor on this issue as well, so there's quite a bit of interaction going on there, too.

I know it's very frustrating, especially when Apple rarely, if ever, acknowledges that there is a problem, but they are working on it and will release a fix as soon as they can. All we can really do in the meantime is try to wait patiently. That, and report your specific issues directly to Apple Care. They need to hear about the specifics of your issues to assist them in identifying the problem. They may or may not monitor the forums, but they do pay attention to their support calls.

My diagnostics came up with the following results>

WiFi operates normaly for x amount of time. Suddenly connection stabilises @ 80KBps (roughly 10% speed).

Magic Mouse on. Bluetooth on. After restarting WiFi (turn OS wifi on/off) connection gets to full speed for a very short period of time.

Turn bluetooth off and connection gets to full speed instantly.

So my guess is that the Bluetooth somehow interferes w/ WiFi.

Until Apple patches this, when you need full speed on WiFi, turn bluetooth off.

I spoke to apple about by 2 issues

1) Wifi reconnects after machine has not been used for a while with lid up - shows connected but isn't - all pings fail - only way to fix is turn off airport and back on again on MBP

2) Ping reliable and then all over place - i.e. .9,.9,.9 the 81 the 72 the .9, .9.

Apple asked for a safe mode reboot and restest - same problem. Am now booked into genius bar on saturday for further diagnostics and from what the guy on the phone said a poss new wifi module (2 hours to fit if they have a spare in stock).

Re bluetooth interference - I don't use and have bluetooth off for all of the above - so maybe speed is restricted by bluetooth - but I would venture may not be the full cause of delayed pings and wifi not reconnecting.

Just my observations - hope this helps

Bluetooth is not the cause on my end. I turned it off the first day and still have the crazy pings. I am pretty sure the pings are absolutely normal and are a power saving feature of the broadcom chip. I notice no delays loading websites compared to my other devices. If you change the ping timing to a quicker threshold the pings return to normal. It appears the wifi chip is shut off when their is no internet traffic and quickly powered on when traffic resumes.

I can confirm your findings. The ping latency is due to the powersaving features in the chipset - whether it is the broadcom or the Haswell, is discusable.

If you open up an application that streams a lot of data, your pings will drop to 1ms, as soon as the app stops, the ping jumps up again. It seems that the "terminal app" has the same features built in as Safari - save as much power as possible.

If you do a speedtest in Safari, the download might seems jumpy, laggy, ... do that same speedtest again and keep moving your mouse over the applet, causing it to "catch focus" and you will see a consistent speedy download.

If you do your speedtest in for instance Chrome, this drop doesn't happen - but it doesn't save any power either.

I only suffer from slow uploads/downloads although I'm connected @ 300/300 MCS15 to my AP.

Same problem of wifi drops here.

I put in 3 trouble tickets for this same issue for my 13" MBP retina 16Gb/256 GB.

At first I could replicate the wifi drop by closing the lid, then opening it. First call to apple support had me boot in safe mode, told me to see if that fixes the problem and then "call back" if I lose wifi.

About minutes later, wifi dropped. Called in about a bit later, and was told do reset the PRAM (holding 4(?) keys during power on) then "forgetting" my wifi ssid.

I thought that the resetting of pRAM fixed the problem, because closing the laptop didn't cause wifi to drop.

Well, today, wifi dropped yet again. Called Applecare and I am outside the 2 week return window, so I need to go to an applestore. Problem is, at the store, the wifi probably won't drop in the 15 minutes that the genius looks at my mbp. So now I'm trying to figure out a way to repeatably get wifi to drop. So far, no dice.

I have tried dimming the screen, set sleep to 1 minute, closing all apps, closing the lid for a few minutes (all energy saving options).

With those settings I can't get the system to drop wifi. But I will keep trying. Other than wifi drops, I love the new mbpRetina.

I also have sporadic ping responses:

I have an early model Macbook Pro Retina. I ran both Mountain Lion and Maverick on it and I encountered the exact problem described in this thread for one year.

Finally, after one year of trouble shooting, I realized that if I were to assigned a static IP address for the Macbook on my router's DHCP server, the problem goes away. Further, when I open the lid and wake up from sleep, I only have to wait a few seconds to get connected to the router. I am current using WPA encryption. I belive it should work for WPA2 but have not tried it.

I hope this helps someone.

This is what I have done in the past:

1) tried three different modems/routers from two different manufacturers hoping it is a modem/router problem. Problem not solved.

2) Downgraded from WPA2 to WPA hoping it is a protocol problem. Problem not solved.

Problems I have encountered and is no more a problem:

1) wifi drops during use

2) wifi cannot connect when waking from sleep

3) wifi crashes occasionally!!

4) having to wait many minutes for establishing a wifi connection when waking from sleep
