Slow volume response since installing OS X Mavericks

I installed Mavericks first day of release on my Powerbook 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 and began noticing when I used my Function F11 and F12 keys for volume control the response is delayed or non-responsive. I'll hold down Fn and go for louder or quieter and the Volume Status bar will appear, but the tick marks will not respond for approx 6 seconds. It's not the keyboard, since I use both the laptop keyboard and a plug in keyboard. Both perform the same. It's also not F keys. Without holding down Fn both respond to clearing the screen etc at normal speeds. I searched Support for any similar problems but didn't see any.

I, likewise, am suffereing from this lag in response to volume key presses since upgrading to Mavericks. No PRAM zapping, cache removal or restarts effectively resolve this delay. However, I have noticed that when I have the System Preferences Sound panel open (and frontmost) the delay is not exhibited.

This seems to indicate to me that there is a bug in whatever software daemon listens for these key presses and relays the instructions to the hardware. Perhaps it is related to Apple's efforts of saving battery life. I speculate that the listening daemon lowers its sampling frequency when "backgrounded". While the Sound panel is frontmost the listening daemon ramps up it sampling rate thereby improving the response time.

Whatever the cause of the delay may be its presence is annoying.

I'm having this problem as well, but every infrequently. Sometimes my late-2011 high-end 15" MacBook Pro wakes up responding very slowly to volume adjustments, and the traditional volume pop sound is missing as well. However, killing the core audio daemon forces it to restart, which fixes the problem for me.

To kill the core audio daemon, open Terminal and type:

sudo killall coreaudiod

The system will then ask for your password; enter it and the core audio daemon will be killed and restarted shortly after, fixing the problem.
