Slow volume response since installing OS X Mavericks

I installed Mavericks first day of release on my Powerbook 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 and began noticing when I used my Function F11 and F12 keys for volume control the response is delayed or non-responsive. I'll hold down Fn and go for louder or quieter and the Volume Status bar will appear, but the tick marks will not respond for approx 6 seconds. It's not the keyboard, since I use both the laptop keyboard and a plug in keyboard. Both perform the same. It's also not F keys. Without holding down Fn both respond to clearing the screen etc at normal speeds. I searched Support for any similar problems but didn't see any.

Dear Vaelian,

After typing the command sudo killall coreaudiod, it asks for my password, which I'm not able to type. It shows a grey small rectangle and i can't type nor paste anything. This is driving me really nuts, every apple update has given me problems. Have any idea how to get rid of this typing problem?

Nevermind, one way or the other it wouldn't show anything but when I just typed it and entered it it worked. Thanks!

Worked for me too! To anyone having password problems, some info: the cursor isn't suppose to move or show any characters that you're typing. Just type your password and press Return and terminal should then execute the command and then the prompt will be active again.

Also, sorry for resurrecting this topic. It's still applicable though. Had this problem in OS X Yosemite. (10.10.5)

I'm having this problem as well, but every infrequently. Sometimes my late-2011 high-end 15" MacBook Pro wakes up responding very slowly to volume adjustments, and the traditional volume pop sound is missing as well. However, killing the core audio daemon forces it to restart, which fixes the problem for me.

To kill the core audio daemon, open Terminal and type:

sudo killall coreaudiod

The system will then ask for your password; enter it and the core audio daemon will be killed and restarted shortly after, fixing the problem.

Thanks it works! It worked for me on OSX El Captian 🙂
