Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.

I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.

If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.

This has always worked before.

Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Hi Dudley

I am well aware of the problem and the fact that there are still Gmail-related issues left for Apple to fix.

My post was meant as a reply to Enaut and anyone else who might stumble on this thread while troubleshooting the issue with Mail no longer downloading new e-mails from Gmail, as no other replies clearly explained how to deal with this - which folder to rename or delete and how to find it.

I kept reading the forum and decided to try the easy method of turning on the option "Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server." at Gmail's settings then it turned on another option that I have not noticed before - Folder Size Limits -> Do not limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder (default) and ...

vu à la the gmail's posts started to erupt... finally.

Thanks for the tips, you are awesome community!

Best regards

I'd had hopes that the latest revision to Mail would work. I'm glad to hear Apple is at least working on this issue.

Meanwhile, I seem to have no problem with syncing email using the following 3rd-party email apps on my laptop and iOS devices:

Laptop: primarily Sparrow (still works fine under Mavericks, even though it's no longer being supported), playing around with Inky.

iOS: Mailbox (works great)

Sorry, Apple, until you get this issue fixed I won't be using Mail.

I have been keeping my mouth shut so far because I only use email for personal communication, and therefore do not have a very complicated Gmail set-up. This difficulty is a mere annoyance to me, but it is an annoyance.

I don't know if I read it in this discussion, or in another on the same topic, but someone suggested deleting Gmail from the Internet Accounts list, then adding it back. (There may have been a "close Mail" instruction in there somewhere.) I did it. It scared me at first, because it looked like the inbox wasn't going to rebuild, but I went to another folder then back to the inbox and it began to rebuild. Since then, Mail has sync'ed better with my iPad & my iPhone, but not consistently perfect as before Mavericks.

There are other annoyances. For example, there are too many Gmail folders in Mac folders instead of the clear distinction between the two groups of folders, and Gmail Spam shows up in Junk Mail but is not marked as junk so cannot be given a thumbs up if appropriate. I hope that the engineers have spotted these issues as well.

Sorry to hear that you are still experiencing problems using Gmail in Mail.

At this point in this discussion I think it needs to be clarified that the discussion forum is not monitored by Apple engineeers. There is however a bug reporting system for developers located at bugreport.apple.com.

That said, Apple seems to be well aware of the Gmail-related issues mentioned in this thread, so I am sure they are hard at work on fixing them. In the meantime you can always access Gmail through your web browser.

Would simply like to weigh in that I believe that I am in the same boat. Running Mavericks. Using Apple Mail (7.0) to access my corporate gmail account via IMAP. Can setup the account fine. Send/receive work fine. The canonical gmail folders (labels) work fine. However, none of the folders (labels) that I had previously created in gmail work properly under Mac Mail.

* They appear in the folder hierarchy correctly

* They function OK, in that I can put an email into the folders and that change is reflected in the browser-based view of my gmail account

However, none of the foldered messages are visible in their folders in Mail. Even those that I dragged into the folder using Mail.

I assume that there is something amiss regarding label (folder) processing, and am certainly willing to believe that I need to change my Mail settings (or gmail ones) in order to get things to work correctly.

Best,

Doug

I haven't tried it, but I think it's probably not a good bet for solving the problem, judging from how widespread the issue seems to be.

What I've done is scrapped Mail for the time being and went to Airmail. It was worth the two bucks to the app store for something that actually works consistently with Gmail. There are some things I like better about Apple Mail, but Airmail serves my needs for now.

Donnie -

You are right that reinstalling Mavericks is not the solution to this problem. I heard again on Friday from the Mail Specialist at AppleCare who has been in contact every 10 days or so since I called for help on this problem. He says that the problem continues to be worked on by Apple, but at present, they do not have a fix. He could not provide a timeframe for the next upgrade, but said he would call back in another 10 days. This is not very encouraging. It would seem this should not be such a difficult problem to solve since Apple already had it working correctly with Mail 6.5 under OS X 10.8.

After installing the upgrade to OS X 10.9.1, I am noticing some improvement, but Gmail is still not working like it does under Mail 6.6 in OS X 10.8. Sometimes the emails get synced really quickly with Gmail and other times, they do not get synced at all. As a result, I am still not upgrading to Mavericks on my iMac which I use for my business.
