Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.

I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.

If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.

This has always worked before.

Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

Dudley, renaming the mail and mail downloads folder in my user libary (since I could not find it in the systems library) seems to have solved the problem for me as well. Mail, out of a sudden, is even quick again. Fantastic.

On top of that, many people might find this (terminal) command usefull:

chflags nohidden ~/Library

To display the user libary in finder...

I wanted to wait about 24 hours since I made this change to see how Gmail was reacting. At this point, syncing seems to be going well. Gmail under Apple Mail 7.0 is still not displaying all the system labels that I have set to appear in IMAP, but I am generally pleased. I will continue to watch it, but may go ahead and update my iMac to Mavericks now that most everything I need seems to be working.

Gmail apps account is back to not syncing like it should. I deleted the old 'mail' folder in Library directory and let mail rebuild it. Seemed to work okay for a day. Now when I access gmail inbox from any other source and archive messages when I come back to the mac all the messages show unread and are still sitting in inbox. So Mavericks even with mail patch not cleaning up inbox to match what gmail inbox contains....

Gmail is still working most of the time, but occasionally it does not sync some emails. I will call Apple Care back tomorrow and see what else they can suggest. Initially, the Mail Specialist suggested that perhaps Mavericks had not installed correctly, so I should do a re-install. I told him I had done a clean install and all had gone well.

I have found the update to be worse. Before the update I could download mail but when i moved it into "folders" or Gmail labels, it appeared in Apple mail to have created 2 copies - leaving one in the inbox. However, this was not the case when i actually reviewed my mail online (just an Apple mail glitch).

Since the update I don't have any mail since 11/10 showing in Apple mail. I've been using the online browser version of gmail for the last few days as I can't force it to download anything. When I do a synch it seems like it is downloading stuff but there is nothing new in the inbox.

Edited:

Actually it appears both my Junk and my Trash are synching (WTH?) but they are the only folders that are.

Remove AntiVirus (if you have one)

It did not make much sense to me, but before I installed another email client I decided to give Mail a last chance: I completely removed my antivirus program from my iMac (Avast in this case) and suddenly Mail started syncing with my Gmail accounts.

That's why it was working on my MacBook and on iPhone (no antivirus there) but not on the iMac.

Check if that is case for someone with the same problem.

I spoke with a Mail Specialist at Apple Care again in follow up to my last conversation, and he confirmed that this is a known situation that the engineeers are working on. I uploaded some settings info. to Apple at his request to get a better idea of what is happening and what may be causing it. At this point, there is nothing else they can suggest other than to wait for a fix in the next update for Mavericks. At present, Mail 7.0 is able to sync the majority of the time, but still gets stuck allowing email messages to pile up when they have already been deleted or moved in Mail 6.6 running under OS X 10.8 or in Gmail running on the Internet. Also, the system labels in Gmail are not consistently available.

Okay, this workaround seems to be helping this sync issue for me. Go into Gmail settings under Forwarding and POP/IMAP and under IMAP Access: When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted and turn auto expunge OFF. This seems to have allowed me to handle email throughout the day on a macbook air and then syncing normally with Gmail Apps account on macbook pro at home at end of day; both running Mavericks with Apple Mail 7.0 (1822) update. See if this helps.

Andre -

This is the same attempted remedy that I posted a week ago. While it definitely seems to help, it does not solve the problem. After a week of watching Gmail sync between a MacBook Pro Retina with Mavericks and the 2nd build of Mail 7.0 and my iMac with OS X 10.8 and Mail 6.6, it is clear that they are not always in sync. Also, there is still a problem with being able to select system labels in Gmail to display in IMAP.

I was contacted by the Apple Mail specialist again yesterday to say that at present Apple does not have a fix for this problem. The one suggestion he had, I had already tried unsuccessfully. He indicated that their engineers are working on it, and are hoping to have the fix soon. He said he would call me back in 2 weeks, which did not give me confidence that Apple is on the verge of a fix.
