Mavericks keeps starting up apps on restart

Hi,


I updated OS to Mavericks but everytime I boot Mavericks, it opens many apps on booting. I probably should mention that I close/quit all of my apps before shutting down my iMac and 'Reopen windows when logging back in' is not active.

Perhaps in my original post(s) on this topic, I should not have generalized as to which apps I was talking about. I meant to refer only to Messages. I used to want it to open it at Login, but now I no longer want that.


To investigate coordination between the list of Login Items and the Open at Login option in the Dock, I conducted 2 tests.


In my first test:

1. I opened System Preferences==>Current Users Login Items. Messages was not even in the list.


2. I quit out of System Preferences.


3. I went to the Dock and right clicked on Messages==>Options and selected Open at Login so now there is a checkmark next to Open at Login.


4. I opened System Preferences==>Current User’s Login Items again. Messages WAS now in the list, but the box to the left of it DID NOT HAVE A CHECKMARK. To me, this means the coordination between Login Items and Dock Options is not functioning completely. I should have seen Message in the list AND a checkmark next to it.


5. I quit out of System Preferences.


6. I went to the Dock and right clicked on Messages==>Options again and DE-selected Open at Login so now there is NO checkmark next to Open at Login.


7. I opened System Preferences==>Current User’s Login Items again. Messages was NO LONGER IN THE LIST at all. I think removing Messages from the list entirely was overkill. Instead, it might more properly have remained in the list, but without a checkmark.


In my second test:

1. I opened System Preferences==>Current Users Login Items. Messages was not even in the list.


2. I quit out of System Preferences.


3. I went to the Dock and right clicked on Messages==>Options and selected Open at Login so now there is a checkmark next to Open at Login.


4. I opened System Preferences==>Current User’s Login Items again. Messages WAS now in the list, but the box to the left of it DID NOT HAVE A CHECKMARK.


5. I put a checkmark in the box.


6. I quit out of System Preferences.


7. I went to the Dock and right clicked on Messages==>Options again and saw that there was still a checkmark next to Open at Login.


8. I opened System Preferences==>Current User’s Login Items again. Messages was still in the list with its checkmark checked.


9. I UNCHECKED the box next to Messages.


10. I quit out of System Preferences.


3. I went to the Dock and right clicked on Messages==>Options and there is STILL a checkmark next to Open at Login. (To me, this means the coordination between Login Items and Dock Options does not function properly.)

I tried that and got the same result. I also have not explored this issue with any other apps because I do not start any other apps at login.


At this point, I am not looking for a work-around. I know that if I check or uncheck the option in one place(e.g. the Dock) it is up to ME to go to System Preferences and do the same operation there. And, vice versa.


If some other work-around is available, that will be great, BUT I must reiterate that Apple needs to fix this. I know that Apple will agree.


How would you feel if you used an electronic banking program and in one area of the program all of your deposits were properly reflected but in another area they did not exist? Or if in one area of the program you checked a box that told the program to alert you of specific activity, but a week later, your account was drained because that checkmark did not get processed into that part of the program that watches out for that sort of activity?

If, in a program, in this case the OS, you allow a setting to be changed, that change must be reflected everywhere else the setting is viewed or is allowed to be changed.

I was having the same problem with applications open in on start up. The solution for me was actually very simple. On examining System Preferences/General/Checkbox “Close windows when quitting an application” I found it was already checked. By unchecking it & then checking it again I now no longer have previously open windows open up at startup. Hope this proves of assistance to others.

Hi.

The check mark in the Login Items list corresponds to "Hide on Launch" -- it doesn't control activation.


If the item is in the list, it is launching on startup. If the check mark is activated, it is (or should be) simply hiding the running app -- as if you'd chosen "Hide..." from the app's menu.


But by this point in the thread, this may be off topic. Sorry if ....

After a lot of tests, (removing ~/Library/Saved States… locking ByHost/com.login… etc.) my 24 laboratory iMacs kept restarting every app that was left open when I quitted with Apple Remote Desktop everyone. That was the key here. If I entered in one of them and did a manual ⌘-⇧-Q on it to manually logout it, the dialog offered me the option to not restart the still open apps, so, by default, manually you have the desired behaviour. Solution: do it manually in every of them, and do it programmatically, with AppleScript (what a marvellous!):


osascript <<EndOfMyScript

tell application "System Events" to keystroke "q" using {command down, shift down}

delay 1

tell application "System Events" to keystroke return

EndOfMyScript


As a terminal command to send to every computer, and it leaves the computer clean of that annoying (in this environment) app reopening persistence. In Apple Remote I always put it as root command.


The only situation you must deal with here can be those annoying Java apps, and non integrated ones that ask you if you want to quit before quitting

This thread, and most other places I googled mention the same tips, but as usual, a Stack Exchange site came to the rescue 😍 Turns out there is a third option to opening apps on login, and you control it through the Dock!

This is what finally got Spotify, Chromium and some other apps to stop launching on every login. Previously I had tried

  • The unticking the checkbox on shutdown/logout
  • The 'defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no' approact
  • Removing all login object from the Users and Groups in the system settings.

None worked, but this one did. Since I haven't seen this tip in the thread, I am posting it here.
