AirPlay Extended Display No Sound From TV

When I extend my desktop from my MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012 model to my tv connected via Apple TV, I can move windows to and from either screen no problem, but I cannot get sound to play through the speakers on my tv for some reason. I've tried going into system preferences and manually changing the sound output device from the computer's speakers to the Apple TV, but it will not allow me to select the Apple TV. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this issue. Has anyone ben able to resolve this?

So I have tried switching the sound output, it kept switching back; rebooted both my computer and the Apple TV, all it did was let me switch to apple tv audio except the sound didn't actually work, tried changing the core audio in the terminal, all that did was keep me from choosing apple tv audio again...so thats fun. cant use apple tv audio even though i tried everything.

I don't know if it's your problem. But with my Mac Mini I have a pair of powered speakers plugged into the headphone jack. If I want to extend/mirror to my Apple TV and have the audio there as well. I would need to unplug the speakers from the headphone jack.

The problem that everyone else is having in this thread is not related to what is happening with me. But if they too were to plug in some speakers into their headphone jack. the audio will be coming out of those speakers instead of the Apple TV. It's been like this for years.

Also something to look out for here is OS X's tendency to reset your volume level when you switch between devices.

Sometimes when I switch to a new Airplay device, the volume control is reset to "0", so it seems that the sound goes away. Just going to the volume setting in the top line of the desktop may be all you need to do.

This may sound like a "duh" answer, but ... I'm a sofware professional who went through this entire thread before realizing OS X was just muting my Apple TV with the volume slider.

I'm an idiot too. It was the volume reset to zero that was the culprit in my case. I only discovered this when I went to Sound in Preferences (after trying the reboot suggestions) because people were saying they couldn't select the appropriate speakers. My speakers were correctly selected but volume "0". I now have my speaker output volume displayed on my screen so I can pick up on this earlier. Thanks Forum.
