AirPlay Extended Display No Sound From TV

When I extend my desktop from my MacBook Pro 15" mid-2012 model to my tv connected via Apple TV, I can move windows to and from either screen no problem, but I cannot get sound to play through the speakers on my tv for some reason. I've tried going into system preferences and manually changing the sound output device from the computer's speakers to the Apple TV, but it will not allow me to select the Apple TV. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this issue. Has anyone ben able to resolve this?

Ok I've restarted my macbook pro, I've restarted the Apple TV, I've unplugged and plugged back in the Apple TV, and I've restarted my wifi. Still no sound. Under system preferences, I'm able to select the Apple TV for sound output, and the volume was at max. Audio still coming out through the laptop. The REALLY frustrating part is that when I dragged the output volume bar to mute and then back to max volume, it made the volume-clicking sound through the TV, not the computer speakers! (You know when you adjust your volume up and down on the mac with the keyboard buttons and it makes that sound louder and louder so you know how loud the volume is? That's what I mean by volume clicking sound. I'm not a tech-smart person 😕)

Please somebody help me before I throw every Apple product I can find into the ocean!

For good measure, here's my volume window.
