Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9 firewire audio problem on RME Fireface 800, MOTU 828 Mk II and Apogee Duet on late 2013 iMac i7

I just got the late 2013 iMac 3.5GHz Intel Core i7 and all my firewire based audio interfaces do not work properly although I upgraded to the latest drivers. iTunes or Youtube can play for a short and then there are unbrearable digital noises.

Apogee Duet is slightly better that can play for a few minutes. Then it may have short pause or digital noises. I need to reset the "Sample Rate" to other values to get it work again.

MOTU 828 mk II and RME Fireface 800 are having the most serious problems. Alternating the sample rate can sometimes help but often I need to reboot the iMac to get it work again. However, it works for only 1-2 minutes before the digital noises.

These are the software/drivers I installed:

- Apogee Maestro 2 version 2.8.8

- MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X version 1.6.58373 (8/20/2013)

- RME version 3.19, firmware 2.77

I connect the fireware through Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor.

These drivers are supposed to work with 10.9 but they don't. Anyone can help or share experience?

I had the same issue with PrismSound Orpheus firewire interface. The stuttering audio often appeared 3-5 minutes of playing in either iTunes, Safari, and even Logic Pro X. The issue ALWAYS occurred when playing audio/video with Quicktime Player, but NEVER occurred when I use the space key to play audio/video with Preview.

After longtime search, I became certain that this issue was associated with the latest upgrade to OSX 10.9. The temporary remedy is to open your Application folder, right click on the applications that you often use, and check the "Prevent App Nap" option. I did so to Chrome, iTunes, Safari, and Logic.

The issue seems not to appear again, but if I play anything with Quicktime Player it will come again (unfortunately there is no "Prevent App Nap" for this app).

I do hope Apple will release a fix to this soon.

Hello,

I'm glad I found your tip, I'll try it tonight. I have a late 2013 Mac Pro and since I bought it I had to buy an adapter for the Orpheus and from then on I always have problems, running Cubase, the sound freezes for a while than plays again. At the beginning I thought it was an Orpheus problem and I was quite sad? Then I plugged a RME Babyface that I use with the MacBook and I haven't had this problem since. But it's sad to work with a RME when one has the Orpheus ;-)

Please if you have other tips regarding this problem share it with me because I was quite desperate !

Thank you

Michel
