App Store not working on my mac

After installing OSX Mavericks on my Mac Pro Book the App Store application will "open" to a blank screen but none of the functions work. If you click on any selections (i.e., Featured, Updates, etc.) or the menu option Store, the app will clock and go into not responding mode. Since App Store is supposed to be part of the OSX install, is there some fix or a way to delete and re-install App Store without re-installing the entire Mavricks update?

After running the fix I described in a previous message, my AppStore stopped working again.

Browsing through this forum didn't help at all, but I finally found this post by Joseph Scott:

Finally a solution that actually solved the problem!!

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Thank you, Joseph 🙂

Note: when started again, AppStore shows app updates are available, even though I updated the apps minutes ago. I'll try to find a solution for this problem, but at least now I can browse the AppStore and install apps.

I solved this problem by clicking the "view my account" button in the store menu. When I logged in with my password, the App Store worked for me again. So I assume my password having been updated at a past date, was causing a problem in the App Store. It was trying to connect with an old password. So you are basically giving it your new password by logging into your account again. The bottom line is: it was an updated password conflict.

Ok, so this is what you do - and after subsequent restarts, logging in and out and back in again to the App Store (none of which worked for me) then I did the following on MacBook Air 11" Yosemite (yes I know) 10.10.2.

You quit everything. You restart. You hold down Command, Option, P and R simultaneously as you restart. You release. You open the App Store. Conduct any updates and all is well.

Good luck.

I am using OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 and get trouble in update the Mac.

When I open Mac AppStore and go to Updates tab screen, it starts to do checking for update process. But it then no response and I need to force quit the appstore application. I have restarted the machine and the issue happens again & again.

OK.. I found a site with a guy saying to try activity monitor and see what was going on... I had a look at the list and I could see 'software updated' task at the top in red, saying it was not responding. I force closed that, received a dialogue box from the app store saying it failed to communicate to the 'helper' or something... then went into the update page, clicked update on the software update and away it goes! Im not 100% certain that this has fixed my issue, as I'm yet to see it installed and happy days. But this is the furtherest I've gotten yet!

Edit: Watching the activity monitor while it updates, its come up as its 'not responding' again, but it is still showing that its downloading the update.. we'll see 🙂

I know your post was a year and a half ago, but I just had the problem today. This actually fixed the app store problem for me, even though it was a little hard to hold down 4 keys and power off & on. That Joseph Scott is called the "Bug Exorcist" for a good reason, what a great service he does, and offers such free advice online! So boris_ch, I don't know why your solution was ignored in this forum. It worked great. 🙂

Actually LindsayS89's activity monitor thing worked for me.

My Mac App Store keeps freezing when I try to update any apps. Restart didn't help, resetting NVRAM didn't help, Firewalls didn't help, Time change didn't help. App Store location preference didn't help...

Here are the steps I did to get it working (Using MacOS X Yosemite 10.10.3):

1. Find Activity Monitor app from the spotlight search

2. Open Mac App Store and goto Updates tab. Click on any updates to start updating

3. Watch the "storedownloadd" process in the CPU tab of Activity Monitor

4. When the process peaks to 100%, click on the icon that says "force a process to quit" while highlighting the "storedownloadd"

5. select 'Force to quit' option

Then everything starts over and download starts to happen in the App Store! Magic!

Hope this works for y'all.

Good Luck!
