How to make keyboard do accent marks???

Ok. So I just got the Mavericks update. And now when I hold down a letter (in order to add an accent mark to it), it won't work anymore. Does anyone know how to fix this!?!? Because Apple sure doesn't. Please help 😟

I'm so frustrated! Have Mavericks 10.9.1. None of the suggestions (eg, system preferences) work for me. I just can't type any accent marks anymore. ( Even tried Melophage's Terminal command as well. but got:

defaults[402:507]

The domain/default pair of (kCFPreferencesAnyApplication, ApplePressAndHoldEnabled) does not exist )

I also tried restarting.

I have just discovered the same problem, where before I could hold down a key (in any application - be it Pages, Word, Mail) & a menu of accents would pop up, & I could select a number. All of a sudden (with no changes to keyboard settings) that has vanished. I have tried to adjust keyboard settings / repeat delays etc. following the advice here, to no avail.

Bizarre!

Well before I got the mavericks update, I only had to hold down the key I wanted an accent on by itself (like if i wanted an a with an accent on it I would hold the a key down) and then a list would appear with all of the different accent options and you would pick one. And now it doesn't do that.

That still works fine for me
