How to make keyboard do accent marks???

which one of the solutions worked for you? none are working for me... i have a MacBook Air and im running

Go to System Preferences, Keyboard, Input Sources and choose the U.S. International - PC. I'm assuming your Macbook keyboard layout is the standard US.

It worked perfectly for me.

I tried this but still no success... may i ask what your Keyboard settings are... under System Preferences >>> Keyboard - Key Repeat & Delay Until Repeat.

Key Repeat: level 6

Delay Until Repeat: level 5

if you open Terminal and give it the following command, what output does it return?

defaults read -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled

If it’s set to “false”, then the accent mark pop-up menu has been disabled in favor of a key repeat.

I'm so frustrated! Have Mavericks 10.9.1. None of the suggestions (eg, system preferences) work for me. I just can't type any accent marks anymore. ( Even tried Melophage's Terminal command as well. but got:

defaults[402:507]

The domain/default pair of (kCFPreferencesAnyApplication, ApplePressAndHoldEnabled) does not exist )

I also tried restarting.

Hah! Turns out that this issue is application related; it is not an operating system issue! Accents work (by holding down the key) in Mail and TextEdit. BUT NOT IN OPEN OFFICE! Problem solved.

I have just discovered the same problem, where before I could hold down a key (in any application - be it Pages, Word, Mail) & a menu of accents would pop up, & I could select a number. All of a sudden (with no changes to keyboard settings) that has vanished. I have tried to adjust keyboard settings / repeat delays etc. following the advice here, to no avail.

My problem was that I was trying to do it with the Japanese Romaji keyboard (to enter non-Japanese characters).

Now I remember that that keyboard had also bugs I reported before to Apple. The accents even show up in the keyboard viewer but won't work (e.g. é, ñ).

As for the long press, I wasn't aware of, thanks!

I have OSX 10.9.2 - I have tried all that has been suggested here and my accents are still non-existent in every program - Mail, iCloud, Office...

Any suggestions?

Set your keyboard to US or UK British

My keyboard was set to US, which did not work and I changed it to British to no avail. I have tried adjusting my type settings and the keuboard language between english and portuguese.

It seems this change took place after restarting my computer - I assume an update was waiting for a restart to be initialized.

Your setup is the same as mine, 10.9.2, US Standard Keyboard, accents work for me by holding the key down.

Reboot into Safe Mode and try again.

I have no issues, but I chose the Input Source: US International PC.

I type the accent before the letter and it works: áéíóú àèìòù â...
