How to make keyboard do accent marks???

I noticed this: if you have Webroot security installed, it won't work...

You have to pause Secure Keyboard Entry in the Webroot menu. Then select US keyboard (doesn't have to be international)... then it will work.

That will maybe help some people.. but not all... also there might be other security applications that have that feature to prevent keyloggers from recording keystrokes.

Nothing would work for me either (i.e. all the work-arounds above) until I re-booted. Now I have the ability to hold down keys and see accent options appear.

This worked for me:

Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities > Terminal) and run the following command:

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

To enable it again change the ending "false" to "true"

Webroot is the source of the problem. At least in my case.

This what i did. First go into terminal. The type in defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true and press enter. Then restart your computer and it should work

Thanks for that code - it worked for me after I'd lost the accent marks on a MacBook Air with OS10.9.5 (Mavericks).

I read all of the advice here and nothing worked for me. I simply restarted my MacBook Air (OS X Yosemite 10.10.3) and the option menu came back! Hope you got your problem resolved.

hello, im sorry if this sound really stupid or if im a little too late, this might help folks like me that came here looking for a solution, i spent like an hour or so looking for a fix and fiddling with the settings, but what did the trick for me was restarting, yeah i know this is not the solution that you would really like to see on a support board but just leaving my two cents!

Thank you! After following all recommendations above your post, I finally got the alphabets with accents on them to appear after regulating the Key Repeat 🙂
