Macbook Pro Retina 13" late 2013 (Haswell) UI Lag

My config: 2.6/16/256, 10.9 (Mavericks)

NOTE: Outside of the issues mentioned, this computer has been great. Awesome build quality, perfect size and weight, Retina screen is outstanding, CPU is snappy, boot and wake from sleep is blazing, it makes ZERO noise, even under heavy usage it only gets mildy warm and it gets great battery life.

Here's my problem: While the machine is wonderful in many aspects, it is far from the smooth experience we have come to expect from Apple products. As mentioned in the title, the UI is a step behind and the smooth transitions of non-retina models are stuttery a jerky on the retina.

Some examples of UI issues that I've replicated on floor models at the Apple store are:

1. Putting certain stock apps in fullscreen show choppy animation (Finder, Safari, Chrome, Maps) while others are buttery smooth (iPhoto).

2. Mission control stutters occasionally (usually when one of the above offenders are open).

3. Preview of any large .jpg or RAW image will cause significant lag when putting it into fullscreen. It literally trips the entire way.

4. Swiping between full screen apps will cause light animation stutter.

To troubleshoot it, I've done a few things.

1. Brought it to the genius bar. They checked all of the harware and ran a number of other diagnostics (including resetting the PRAM). While they confirmed the issues I have mentioned, they told me to wait for a software update that will resolve them.

2. Tried things that others have reportedly worked for them: Deleting windowservers in Library, etc.

3. Downloaded "Display Menu" from the App Store so that I can manipulate resolution settings. Interestingly enough, Display Menu hasn't optimized all of their settings for Retina and choosing any stock settings (including best for retina 1280x800) lowers the overall image quality. When in Display Menu's version of 1280x800, all of the problems (outide of the preview issue) dissapeared. Animations were back to being buttery smooth. This leads me to belive that Iris isn't quite up the the task of Retina.

I'm hoping that Apple didn't purposely release these Pro's without considering the GPU's ability to offer a "smooth ride". Has anyone else experienced this? If it is indeed a driver issue, I hope that Apple addresses this sooner than later. Based off of forums from early 2013 rMBP owners, it doesn't look like that will be the case.

Are you experiencing this also and have you found any true solutions?

As a follow-up: I went to the Apple Store and was able to recreate my particular issue with every other model of Macbook in the store, which leads me to believe it is an iPhoto issue and NOT a GPU issue on the 13" MBPr.

Specifically, I discovered that a FAST 2 finger swipe does not lead to the jerkiness / stuttering of the animation, but that a very slow one does. It appears that part of the animation is the one causing issues.

I've just bought a 15'' base model MBPr and I'm experiencing scrolling lags while browsing simple webpages on Firefox and also when watching youtube videos.

I think this is unacceptable for a new 2000$ laptop. Having a hi-res screen doesn't make sense if they don't provide capable hardware to handle it.

Returning mine this week.

Got mine two days ago and I have to confirm that it does have lag issues.

Not to mention when I first started it and setup window popped up I coudn't use the trackpad and keyboard because it did not work! Shame on you Apple. I was serioiusly WT*. Anyway turning it off and on fixed the problem. BUT I strongly believe that a $1,500 laptop should not behave like this.

Scrolling in safari does not work smoothly. Also creating new tabs in full screen mode is very laggy. Launchpad. I could go further. Anyway, I really hope that all the screen lags are just software issues not hardware. Otherwise it's a BIG FAIL and I will deinifetly think twice before throwing money on any Apple products ever again.

I've been a loyal customer for years but seriously Apple (the most expensive company in the world) cannot treat their customers like this and sell them S**T.

What's the point in getting an expensive laptop that does not work properly at all?

I'm very frustrated on this purchase.

Thanks for your help mate but why should I look for any workarounds for a brand new laptop I paid $1,500 for. This is ridicoulous. It should either cost less or done properly. Unfortunately, Apple has been failing a lot for the last couple of years and seems to be getting worse.

I've tried Display Menu and it does not work for me. I just hooked up my external FullHD display and it seems working much smoothier. So definiely the problem with the retina display and its resolution.

Anyway, like it was mentioned before what is the point of selling expensive laptops that can't do simply things?

If I paid for this laptop about $800 then I couldn't be happier. But $1,500 for a laptop that irritates...

Apple used to be the best choice when it came to laptops but now it's no way near anymore.

What is the point of this retina display if it does not work smooth like what we all expect from a Macbook? Yes, it looks cool and stunning but that's really it. It reminds me of having Windows on a $200 laptop.

I also hope they read their own forum and take into account what their customers complain about.

Allow me to interject my experience from Apple with this lag issue at this point. I purchased a first generation HD4000 based rMBP with the highest hopes that I just bought the greatest laptop mankind, let alone Apple, had ever built. While I assure you nothing that anything you guys have written have even come near the scale of what is now the most popular thread in all of Apple Discussions, will you ever find more disgust and frustration with a device that clearly has a major technological flaws. Follow this thread and you tell me, after 115,000 view and having Apple remove more than 25 of my own comments, truly I say, is like the workings of a government coverup.

I just want you guys to know that having the discrete (2GB VRAM 750M) GPU in my just purchased 2,600 top of the line rmbp does not help the lag at all! I get all of the same lag tendencies from every one of the tests that you guys are getting them....my biggest pet peve is the grid mode applications folder popping out like its the start menu on a Windows Milenium Edition PC!

ITs also terrible at displaying video over the HDMI out, studders when watching iTunes Movies through it!

I really hope this is fixed in 10.9.1 update that is being worked on. I Love Apple with a passion and have always talked great things about them and Im really hoping I wake up tomorrow from this bad dream of terrible UI Lag and feel like I just purchased an investment and not a mistake!

Thanks for listening. I feel better 🙂

I fully understand your frustration buddy. Been in love with Apple since the iPod.

What I recently discovered is that the Yoga Pro2 has bigger resolution and less powerfull intel chipset HD 4400. Well reportedly it works buttery smooth. So this gives a hope that the problem of the notorious macbook pro retina UI lag is software/drivers related issue. I really hope it is, otherwise it's going to be an epic fail because it's no way "flawless on screen performance" like it's been advertised and written on the website.

On the one hand, it makes sense to deduce this from a logical point of view, on the other hand, I am not positive because I don't think the only 18% better performing HD 4400 compared to HD 4000 in the 1st gen rMBP* is the factor behind Yoga Pro2's smooth scrolling. (*http://www.anandtech.com/show/7085/the-2013-macbook-air-review-13inch/5). In other words, Apple could not fix the UI lag problem in the first generation of the rMBP while a PC with a better yet quite comparable graphics card but a much higher resolution does not have this issue at all. Considering the initial reports of the same issue for the Haswell rMBP, I feel it won't be resolved. It seems for some odd reason only known by Apple, rMBP users have to deal with this issue.
