Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

I have got also a MacBook Air 13 2013 i7 8Go 128Go SSD.

My MBA crashes when turning the mac to sleep (power button) and touching any key to turn it back on within a few second.

I have took it to a Genius Bar for repair they changed both Motherboard an Power Card. That changes nothing. The employee I have been in contact with told me that ALL MacBookAir 13 2013 were having the issue (he tested every Mac of the Apple Store). And that we should wait for Apple to release a Fix.

Mine is a 13" MBA 2013 with larger SSD. I get similar results if I close the lid (for sleep) then realize I forgot something and open it right away. I've always been able to recover by pressing the power button for 5 sec or so to initiate a re-start, so I've not worried about it. Waiting a while to re-open lid avoids the problem.

I believe I had a similar issue running Mountain Lion, but now I'm unclear on that.

I'll try the SMC reset later today.

This is definitly not a MacBook problem; it is a OS X problem, since I experienced similar sleep/wake failure on my iMac mid 2010 ever since I upgraded to Mavericks. Mavericks was still in Beta, they released it so soon without fixing bugs. Now, we have to wait for OS X 10.9 updates fixing these issues.

My MBA did it in Mountain Lion, best I recall. Other than this Mavericks is working 100% for me, has speeded up my system and lengthed battery life. Pretty good for a "beta"!

I imagine there will soon be a 10.9.1 update. But 90% of those installing 10.9 have given it a 5-star rating. And I'm among them.

I just turned off "Power Nap" in the "Energy Saver" section of "System Preferences" but won't know the results until tomorrow as it seems to only misbehaves when I'm not paying attention to it.

I just did the above and now with about 5 tries I'm unable to hang my MB Air by closing the lid and rapidly opening it. Please let us know your results.

I am not saying that Mavericks doesn't have any improvements, but there are known issues with Mavericks ever since we deveopers could access the pre-release; they released Mavericks before fixing the issues. Two pre-release seeds were available to developers since Mavericks was released one month ago; I installed the last one yesterday. So, obviously Apple knows these issues exist. Mail was one example which hopefully is fixed now.

BTW, Mavericks is better than Mountain Lion in general, however, I think they could wait a few more mounths before they release it. I personally find Snow Leopard the most stable OS X.

Turning off Power Nap didn't work for me but here's what did; I just disconnected my two external USB drives at night. Yeah, totally not a real fix as they're for my TimeMachine and Carbon Copy Cloner back-ups. Just a reminder that my problem is a random shutdown&restart when I wasn't using the MBP. I never had the "shut the lid and open it freeze" issue. Hoping for a "real" fix from Apple soon.

I confirm this as well on a mid-2013 macbook air. Specifically, touching/swiping on the trackpad 0.5 - 1 seconds after the display goes black for sleeping crashes it. And by crashing, I mean: the display remains black despite key presses and trackpad clicks, and the computer remains on and (very) active, as evidenced by the rapid draining of battery life if left in that state for several hours.

Holding the power button will shut it down from this crashed state. I can reboot with another power button press.

This problem does not occur if I go to the apple menu, click sleep, then swipe the trackpad within 1 second. It only occurs when I wait for the screen to dim after the requisite period of inactivity, prepare myself for action 🙂, and then swipe 0.5 - 1 seconds after the screen goes black.

The crash is very reproducible on my machine. I was able to demonstrate for an apple store employee.

Guy at the genius bar tried removing /var/vm/sleepimage and disabling screen lock, but neither helped.

If you are reading this and are running Mavericks, please try to crash your machine this way and add to the confirmations.

Okay I found a temporary fix for this problem in another thread:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5495027?start=30&tstart=0

Read nol@n's long answer.

The short of it is to do (in the terminal):

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

This prevents your machine from writing RAM to disk before it sleeps. You can learn more here:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1053471/sleepmode.html

Seems to have fixed the issue on my macbook air.

The downside is, if your machine loses power while sleeping, you've lost all your work.

Update

The "fix" mentioned above (setting hibernatemode to 0) does not resolve the issue. I can still get the machine to crash in the same way.

I noticed another thing fooling around with pmset. The pmset "sleep" timeout (system sleep) was set to 1 min, which was smaller than or equal to the pmset "displaysleep" timeout (>= 1min), and gave rise to warning messages when issuing pmset -a ... commands. (On my air, there is no system preferences setting for system sleep timeout). So I changed pmset "sleep" to be greater than "displaysleep". This did not help either.

I have the latest 2013 MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM, the 2.6Ghz Proc, 1TB flash storage and I am ALSO having this issue.

This needs to be fixed by Apple, I used to have this issue on my old windows machine and it ****** me off to no end, is now ******* me off to no end on a 34 hundred dollar computer. What the ****?

Same issue with a late 2013 MacBook Pro. I've been tracking the various threads on this issue while trying to issolate the cause on my machine. Because the Sleep/Wake problem seems to have many guises this may or may not be of any help.

  • First the Power Nap settings did nothing.
  • I then left my two external USB Hard Drives disconnected and the problem went completely away (3 days).
  • I recconnected the one drive that I use for TIme Machine and still no problemo (2 days)
  • I recconnected the second drive that is partitioned and using Carbon Copy Cloner and the Sleep/Wake crash was immediately back.
  • I dissconnected the partitioned drive and no problem (4 days now).

So in my case it's being triggered by something on or with this external partitioned drive:

My Book 1130:

Product ID: 0x1130

Vendor ID: 0x1058 (Western Digital Technologies, Inc.)

Version: 10.12

Serial Number: 574341575A30353730343430

Speed: Up to 5 Gb/sec

Manufacturer: Western Digital

Location ID: 0x15220000 / 23

Current Available (mA): 900

Current Required (mA): 2

Capacity: 3 TB (3,000,558,944,256 bytes)

Removable Media: Yes

Detachable Drive: Yes

BSD Name: disk3

Partition Map Type: GPT (GUID Partition Table)

S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported

I'm now going to reformat this drive and see if that resolve the issue. I'll post the results in a few days.
