MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad unresponsive

Brand new Macbook PRO Retina 15inch. (1 day old) Running 10.9

EFI 1.2 installed.

Keyboard/trackpad hangs when using the left USB.

The EFI update 1.3 apparently fixes this issue for the 13inch macbook pro.

I have a 15inch macbook pro. The EFI update 1.2 does not resolve this issue for me.

Whenever I plug something into the left USB, after the 2nd or 3rd time, the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive. To get the keyboard/trackpad back again, I must restart the machine.

This is what the consol says:

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest returned error 0xe000404f (interface 1, reportID 0xac, payload 2

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDebug: _deviceSetReport returned an error in configureDataMode

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0xac returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying

I cannot install the EFI update 1.3 as I get an alert "This software is not supported on your system." I assume because it was made only for the 13inch.

Is this a hardware or firmware issue? If it's only firmware, why does this issue only affect some users? If it's hardware, should I just return this macbook?

It just happened to my Late 2013 MPB 15" as well, EFI 1.2 installed running OS X 10.9 (13A3017). I had an Android tablet on the left USB port and all of a sudden the trackpad and keyboard became unresponsive. I disconnected everything, rebooted by using a bluetooth mouse and then I checked the console. Lot of errors thre if I filter by AppleUSBMultitouchDriver.

Did you contact Apple support for your issue?

Nov 20, 2013 2:10 PM in response to glgerard

I can reproduce the behavior at will. I just have to plug in the tablet on the left USB board, reboot the tablet, disconnect the cable and reconnect. At that moment the trackpad and keyboard will both freeze.

Disconnecting the tablet doesn't resolve the issue. A reboot does. I still have to try if the workaround posted by Apple for the MBP-13 Late 2013 (close the lid and reopen after a few minutes) would work here too.

Nov 23, 2013 8:54 AM in response to SolitaryX

On Friday I have contacted Apple Support to notify them about the issue. After having been asked to reset the SMC at no avail, I have reproduced the issue while on the phone with the Apple support agent. I then asked to be transferred to second level support and I provided him with the complete /var/log/system.log file at the time the issue occured asking for the event to be analyzed and resolved. I'd recommend that everyone affected by this hang should contact Apple Support and ask to talk to a senior support representative to speed up the resolution of the issue.

Hi all,

I am feeling the pain also, i have been saving up for for my maxed out 15" retina for nearly two years and i must say that i am disgusted at how unreliable it is ! Just rubbish

For years i have been a pc only user and i envied the reported stability that the mbp 'apparently' had.

I have spent the best part of 3000euros on a laptop which is currently 10 times more unreliable than my last 800euro dell studio....*** !

I have had it for a month now and i can honestly say i regret wasting my money on this.

With a minimum of two hangs per day, no matter what external gear or programs i am using, it just does what it does...hangs, requiring a forced reboot, which does not always work, i generally need to unplug all external gear for it to reboot....i am not a happy camper.

Why only an EFI update for the 13"?

Why am i advised only to use the left usb port for audio interfaces?....are you f**king kidding me??

The final straw is the way the usb shuts down and ejects my audio cards sending a spike across my system resulting in a very loud pop through my pretty high end reference monitors!!

Come on Apple...get your **** together or i will be returning this mashine for a full refund...and i will

Hi I have also a New 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15" Top of the line 16gb ram 1TB ssd. I am having many keyboard and trackpad and magic mouse freezes per day, less than 30 minutes between events and have to hard boot.

I use it for mainly music - Ableton 9 and have Apogee Duet Audio interface pluged into left side USB port, sometimes the audio interface also becomes in active. I am not very impressed with this. Anybody have an idea on the problem. I have the latest Boot rom MBP112.0138.B02. Thanks.

Jan 2, 2014 3:29 PM in response to Sirako5

The keyboard and trackpad and magic mouse only seem to freeze when using the USB port, when using Ableton with inbuilt speakers or headphones pluged directly into MacBook I am not getting this issue. I am following this up now with Tech support.

We did I think it was a (Command + Option + P + R) on boot up, some kind of low level hardware reset but have not had time to establish weather this is effective or not. I will post again when I have any update.

Jan 13, 2014 12:35 PM in response to Sirako5

From time to time I've reliably experienced this problem on hardware as old as a MacBook Air (13", late 2010) to now on a MacBook Pro Retina (13" late 2013).

My longstanding fix for both has been to run the 'USB Prober' tool from the 'Hardware IO Tools for XCode - February 2012' package [1].

I run 'USB Prober' with the "Bus Probe" tab open and both checkboxes "Refresh Automatically" and "Probe suspended devices" checked, and then hide the application. This has solved the ongoing problem for me.

(After logout or reboot you’ll have to manually enable the checkbox “Probe suspended devices” again as it doesn’t appear to be saved across launches.)

I've read in several other discussions/posts [2][3][4] that uninstalling the 'Android File Transfer'(AFT) application may help. Only recently have I removed it from my machine, so I can't claim yet that removal helps.

I hope to update this post in a few weeks if it does help.

I did reboot just now to test whether AFT was the culprit.

Before rebooting, my machine was in a state where I could reliably freeze the internal usb kbd/trackpad on USB device insertion. After rebooting, I can’t (even with AFT installed, and rebooting again). So this issue may be triggered only when multiple elements exist (perhaps in play is the amount of memory in use when the keyboard/trackpad or other AFT gets triggered?)

Brand new MBP Retina 15'' I have this happening with external screen and normal USB mouse, I have the laptop for 2 weeks now extreamly annoying and disappointing. I have a hard time to reproduce this but it happens at least once a day! Reseting SMC did not help. I do not use anything else but external USB mouse and screen on the HDMI connector.

Running OSX 10.9.1 on a late 2013 15 Retina MBP. Using Traxtor Pro 2 with an OWC external 3.0 drive this computer freezes 50% of the time when I only use Traktor's S4. I've been trying to resolve this issue since I bought computer in November of 2013with both Native Instruments and Apple. NI is saying that its an issue with Apple. Went to the Genius Bar on 1/22/14. Tech ran a full diagnostic and concluded that the finder was rebooting spontaneously . Did a fresh reinstall of the operating system (Mavericks). Did not work. Computer still freezes when using Traktor's S4 inserted into the USB. HELP! I've spent a great deal of money for this computer. DJ is my career and need this system to operate falwlessly. I'm using my 2008 Mac Book Pro with the same Trator software and hardware. Has not crashed in over 3 years.

Feb 2, 2014 12:38 AM in response to Sirako5

similar problem here. running the latest 13 inch mbpr and ableton live software.

experiencing crashes only with external soundcards attached. it happened with a usb interface (NI audio 2 dj) and with a echo audiofire 2 (firewire through thunderbold adapt.)

keyboard and trackpad got unresponsive after the crash with the usb interface as they run on the usb buss I suppose.

This is interesting: If i m running usb or firewire interfaces plugged in to my thunderbold display at home - i get 0 problems. it just works 100%

so what does this tell us? is the hardware of the macbook defective?

but why does the FW interface crash then when attached to the computer directly and not if attached to the display?

this is extremely frustrating. basically my job is using this machine on stage and i cant use it. i m back to my 2007 macbook now running 10.6, thinking about getting a USED machine which was before mavericks and haswell - think these are the issues and what i would like to know:

WILL THERE EVER BE A FIX FOR THIS ON THE LATE 2013 MBPr??

Feb 3, 2014 12:34 PM in response to lukasz l

I also occasionally experience this problem with my late 2013 MacBook Pro 15 inch Haswell:

It seems to happen when I remove the thunderbolt DVI adaptor and external USB keyboard.

The internal keyboard and trackpad are unresponsive. I find that if I plug back in the display and keyboard it may start working again, though sometimes it requires several unplug/replug cycles to kick it to work again.

Fortunately, I don't need to hard reboot if I can get back to the external devices but do have to if I forgot to test the internal keyboard before leaving...

Anyone else find this successfully resets for them?

Late 2013 model Rmbpro 15", 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, Since the last time I posted here 1 month ago I have been working on video a lot. what I can say is, my keyboard and trackpad, magic mouse freeze regularly while producing music with Ableton 9 and Apogee Duet audio usb interface, that led me to beleave there was a general problem with the usb interface, however...

with a lot more time on this rmbpro my finding are..

I have had a Seagate usb3 4tb hard drive pluged in continuously for 1 month and it has never once caused a freeze used a lot for my video editing - works flawlessly.

Also never had 1 freeze with 1tb Lacie hd usb 3, or Lexar professional usb3 CF card reader or with plugging in Gopro 3+ black adition to download.

I thought it might be asociated with CPU load or RAM usage but I work my rmbp hard and have been running both After effects, Premiere, and speedgrade simoltaniously editing magic lantern RAW along with Prores 4444 codec and they work very well. I will see what happons when I start doing music again but its a hard one to nail down for sure.
