MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013): Keyboard and Multi-Touch trackpad unresponsive

Brand new Macbook PRO Retina 15inch. (1 day old) Running 10.9

EFI 1.2 installed.

Keyboard/trackpad hangs when using the left USB.

The EFI update 1.3 apparently fixes this issue for the 13inch macbook pro.

I have a 15inch macbook pro. The EFI update 1.2 does not resolve this issue for me.

Whenever I plug something into the left USB, after the 2nd or 3rd time, the keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive. To get the keyboard/trackpad back again, I must restart the machine.

This is what the consol says:

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest returned error 0xe000404f (interface 1, reportID 0xac, payload 2

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDebug: _deviceSetReport returned an error in configureDataMode

Nov 12 11:29:56 leaf kernel[0]: AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0xac returned with result 0xe000404f - retrying

I cannot install the EFI update 1.3 as I get an alert "This software is not supported on your system." I assume because it was made only for the 13inch.

Is this a hardware or firmware issue? If it's only firmware, why does this issue only affect some users? If it's hardware, should I just return this macbook?

The problem still persists. I had another keyboard/touchpad freeze 30 minutes ago. Didn't have any mouse or external keyboard near to test if that would fix it.

As I said, I already removed AFT, but I will install it again and remove service as in that link you posted.

Apart from com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower and com.CalDigit.ThunderboltStationChargingSupport, that were installed *after* this issue appeared, all load kext's are from apple...

But as I said, this was a know issue with the 13", and a EFI update was rolled out. Why not do the same for 15"??

Just like @bobo? said in the reply above:

run the 'USB Prober' tool from the 'Hardware IO Tools for XCode - February 2012' package [1].

I run 'USB Prober' with the "Bus Probe" tab open and both checkboxes "Refresh Automatically" and "Probe suspended devices" checked, and then hide the application.

I ran USB Prober and the trackpad/keyboard started working again. I quit it and they continued working. Since many of the responses mention AFT, I also disabled auto start for AFT as shown in http://mtmurdockblog.com/2012/12/17/disable-auto-start-for-android-file-transfer -on-osx/. So far I haven't had a recurrence of the problem.

I had the same issue with the new model of the 13" (the one released over the past few weeks.) I had the problem twice within 48 hours of purchase. I erased the HD and reinstalled Mavericks. There have been a lot of different suggestions as to what creates this issue, most commonly USB references but also some people mentioned Chrome (I doubt that chrome has anything to do with it but might as well try anything....). I stopped using my USB Belkin dock and I also did not install Chrome. I have not had the problem since. Perhaps I am just lucky but I suspect this is a bad bug in Mavericks itself somewhere which relates to some of the hardware in the MBP. No-one can be sure, not even Apple it would seem.....

Sad to report the same here. Traktor S4 went off all of a sudden in the middle of use. Apple wireless mouse and MBP keyboard not working at all. Had to use the on/off button to restart. Repeated.

External devices included the wireless mouse, LaCie rugged FireWire 800 drive (with a USB connection) and Bose USB speakers, all connected via the Thunderbolt Display then through one thunderbolt cable to the MBP. When Tracktor S4 was in use, S4 sound card was used and it was connected to MBP directly via the left USB port. No other app was open when Tracktor Pro was running.

Very disappointed.

I just had a MacBook Pro 17-inch, Early 2011 built-in keyboard and trackpad freeze. Restarts did not resolve the issue. /var/log/system.log showed several variants of AppleUSBMultitouchDriver::_deviceSetReport - DeviceRequest for reportID 0xc8 returned with result 0xe000404f.

Reading early comments reminded me of resetting SMC. Rebooted with an external keyboard and mouse and followed the instructions here: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and all worked fine (SMC was reset even through resetting it requires using the keyboard while the computer when off).

Pretty scary when it happened, but easily resolved and I have a new dedication to my backup plan.

Hey guys, I see you are having the exact same issue as me [Macbook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013]. The source of the problem is in fact the Android Transfer application that you install to transfer info to and from your android device. Not sure what aspect of the software is causing it, but do the following to fix the issue:

[1] Uninstall the Android File Transfer application from your MBP [Do this by dragging the link from the LaunchPad, then dragging it into the dock. Then right click, and press "Open In Finder". Now move the Icon titled "Android File Transfer" into the trash and empty the trash].

[2] If you do not have the app installed, then don't plug the android device into your MBP. Instead, use an SD Card and transfer files through there, or just use a different computer.

If you really need to use the application, then get a separate Keyboard and Mouse [Get the magic trackpad or some other mouse that you like, just don't get any of Apple's mice since there is no support for 2 separate simultaneous clicks on any of Apple's mice]. I do hope that a fix will be released in Yosemite, since now I have to repeatedly remove the SD Card from the phone just to transfer maybe a song or even a photo.

Cheers! XD
